Golf – The Masters – Matsuyama becomes first Japanese in Masters green jacket

Hideki Matsuyama is the first Japanese player in a green jacket. The 29-year-old won the Masters despite a few nervous moments. He led by as many as six on the back nine. He was only two ahead going to the 16th hole. And then Xander Schauffele made it easy for him by hitting into the water and the gallery and making a triple bogey on the 16th hole. Matsuyama takes his place among the elite in golf. The victory comes 10 years after he was the low amateur in the Masters as a teenager.

Indians 5, Tigers 2 – Strong bullpen leads Indians to sweep of Miggy-less Tigers

Logan Allen recovered from a bumpy first inning to get his first win with Cleveland and the Indians completed a three-game sweep with a 5-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers played without slugger Miguel Cabrera and he could be out for a while. Allen found his rhythm after hitting a batter on his second pitch and walking two in the first. He hung around and allowed just one run and two hits in five innings. Cabrera was placed on the 10-day injury list before the game with a biceps strain that had been affecting his swing. Wilson Ramos homered for Detroit.

Pirates 7, Cubs 1 – Brubaker pitches, hits Pirates to 7-1 win over slumping Cubs

JT Brubaker pitched into the sixth inning and had the first three RBIs of his career to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Chicago Cubs 7-1. Brubaker allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and one walk. His two-run single down the right-field line capped a three-run second inning and gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead. Pittsburgh’s Bryan Reynolds had the third four-hit game of his career. Trevor Williams  was hit hard in his return to Pittsburgh, where he spent the first five seasons of his career before being released in November.

Royals 4, White Sox 3 – F/10 – Royals rally past White Sox for wild 4-3 win in 10 innings

Michael A. Taylor scored when Garrett Crochet misplayed Andrew Benintendi’s bunt in the 10th inning, sending the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Taylor opened the 10th on second base and advanced on Nicky Lopez’s sacrifice. After Whit Merrifield was walked intentionally, Benintendi bunted the ball right back to the mound. It looked as if Crochet had time to get Taylor at the plate, but he spiked his throw and catcher Zack Collins couldn’t come up with it. It was Chicago’s second error of the day and ninth overall in the first nine games.

MLB – Tigers put Miguel Cabrera on IL with biceps strain

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left biceps strain. Cabrera played first base in Saturday’s 11-3 loss to the Indians and went 0 for 3 at the plate before he was replaced by a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. Manager A.J. Hinch said Cabrera has been bothered by soreness in his biceps for a while and felt it “grab” on a swing in the seventh inning. Hinch said Cabrera was undergoing tests that will give the team a better idea how long he'll be sidelined.

MLB – Most of White Sox traveling party gets COVID-19 vaccine

More than 90% of the traveling party for the Chicago White Sox got the COVID-19 vaccine after their home opener, moving the team closer to meeting Major League Baseball’s threshold for relaxing some of the protocols put in place for the pandemic.

Golf – The Masters – Rose torches tough Augusta for 65 and 4-shot Masters lead

Justin Rose picked one of the toughest days at Augusta National for his lowest score in the Masters. Rose made seven birdies and an eagle during a 10-hole stretch. That took him from 2-over par to a 7-under 65 and a four-shot lead after the first round. This was nothing like November. Everyone knew that before the tournament started. No one could have seen a 65 in dry, firm and fast conditions. This was the fourth time Rose has had at least a share of the first-round lead at the Masters, a record he now shares with Jack Nicklaus.

Cubs 4, Pirates 2 – Cubs break out of slump, slip by reeling Pirates 4-2

Jayy Baez hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning and the Chicago Cubs’ struggling offense came to life in a 4-2 over Pittsburgh. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo also homered for Chicago as the Cubs pounded out a season-high 11 hits against Tyler Anderson (0-2) and four Pittsburgh relievers. Baez, Rizzo, Bryant and Jake Marisnick had two hits each as Chicago raised its major-league worst team batting average from .143 to .157. Adam Frazier and Gregory Polanco had two hits each for the Pirates but couldn’t stop Pittsburgh from dropping its sixth straight.

White Sox 6, Royals 0 – Lynn pitches 1st shutout of season, White Sox top Royals 6-0

Lance Lynn pitched a five-hitter for the first complete game and shutout in the major leagues this season, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 6-0 on a rainy Thursday. Yermín Mercedes kept up his scorching start with a 485-foot homer. Yoán Moncada went deep, and the White Sox gave manager Tony La Russa the win in his first home game on the South Side in 35 years. Lynn (1-0) struck out 11 and walked none in his second shutout in 238 career starts, his first since a five-hitter against the New York Yankees on May 27, 2014.

Nikola Vucevic and Zach Levine each scored 22 points and the Chicago Bulls beat the Toronto Raptors 122-113 on Thursday night for their third straight victory. LaVine also had 15 assists, and Lauri Markkanen came off the bench to score 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Chris Boucher scored a career-high 38 points and had 19 rebounds for the Raptors. They have lost 15 of 18. Pascal Siakam added 27 points and eight rebounds for Toronto.

Pistons 113, Kings 101 – Joseph scores 24, Pistons beat Kings 113-101

Cory Joseph had a season-high 24 points and seven assists in his first game against his former team, Jhalil Okafor made a timely return after missing nearly two months following knee surgery, and the short-handed Detroit Pistons beat the Sacramento Kings 113-101. Isaiah Stewart added 16 points and 13 rebounds in place of injured Mason Plumlee for the Pistons. Okafor, who had missed 27 games following left knee surgery, scored 11 points. Killian Hayes also had 11. Detroit entered an East-worst 15-16 but led comfortably against slumping Sacramento after going up by 22 early in the third quarter.
