White Sox 8, Indians 0 – Almost perfect: Rodón settles for no-hitter after HBP in 9th
Carlos Rodón has thrown the second no-hitter of the young baseball season, losing his bid for a perfect game on a hit batter with one out in the ninth inning, and the Chicago White Sox cruised to an 8-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The left-hander retired his first 25 batters before he plunked Roberto Pérez on the back foot with an 0-2 slider. Rodón regained his composure in time to strike out Yu Chang looking and retire Jordan Luplow on a sharp grounder to third, starting a joyous celebration. The crowd of 7,148 cheered as Rodón jumped around with teammates near the mound and then started handing out hugs.
Tigers 6, Astros 4 – Fulmer 1st win since 2018, Tigers sweep shorthanded Astros
Michael Fulmer earned his first win since 2018 and the Detroit Tigers built a big lead before holding off the short-handed Houston Astros 6-4 for a three-game sweep. The Astros put five players, including stars José Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yordan Álvarez, on the COVID-19 injured list before the game. Fulmer ended a nine-game skid dating to before he had Tommy John surgery. Detroit manager A.J. Hinch wrapped up a triumphant return to Houston, where he led the Astros to the 2017 title before being suspended and fired for their sign-stealing scandal.
Brewers 7, Cubs 0 – Burnes delivers with arm, bat as Brewers trounce Cubs 7-0
Corbin Burnes struck out 10 in six dominant innings and also delivered a two-run single for his first career RBIs as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 7-0. Burnes allowed just two hits to continue his sizzling start to the season. His bases-loaded single up the middle capped the Brewers’ four-run outburst in the sixth. The 26-year-old right-hander has driven in two runs this year while allowing just one through his first three outings. Burnes’ performance helped the Brewers take two of three in the series and gain a measure of revenge one day after an emotionally charged 3-2 loss to the Cubs.

MLB – White Sox place RHP Cease on IL, recall RHP Burdi
The Chicago White Sox have placed right-hander Dylan Cease on the injured list in a precautionary move after he exhibited some symptoms associated with COVID-19. General manager Rick Hahn says Cease has not tested positive for COVID-19. Cease’s next turn in the rotation is scheduled for Friday at Boston. The team is hoping he can go, and coming up with a plan in case he isn’t cleared to pitch against the Red Sox. Right-hander Zack Burdi was recalled from the team’s alternate site before its matchup with Cleveland.
MLB – MLB will have minor league experiment with moving back mound
Major League Baseball wants to see if moving back the pitcher’s mound will increase offense. MLB will experiment with a 12-inch greater distance between the mound and home plate during a portion of the Atlantic League season in an effort to decrease strikeouts and increase offense. The pitching rubber will be moved back to 61 feet, 6 inches starting Aug. 3 during the second half of the independent minor league’s season. In addition, the MLB partner league will have an experimental “double-hook DH” rule in which a team would lose its designated hitter when its starting pitcher leaves.
