White Sox 8, Indians 5 – Rodón beats Indians after no-no, Abreu hits 2 homers for Sox

Carlos Rodón followed up his no-hitter by hanging around for five shaky innings to beat Cleveland for the second time in a week and José Abreu homered twice, leading the Chicago White Sox past the Indians. Rodón pitched in short sleeves despite temperatures dropping into the 30s and snow on the way. He worked around five walks, giving up a homer and throwing 110 pitches — four fewer than in his April 14 gem. Jordan Luplow's leadoff homer in the third ended Rodón's streak of no-hit innings against the Indians at 11. Tim Anderson and Yasmani Grandal hit two-run homers for Chicago.

Cubs 3, Mets 1 – Arrieta pitches Cubs to 3-1 win over Mets on cool night

Jake Arrieta pitched five effective innings, Craig Kimbrel escaped a jam in the ninth and the Chicago Cubs used some aggressive baserunning to beat the New York Mets 3-1. Arrieta allowed one run and three hits, struck out four and walked three. Wearing short sleeves on a cool, clear night — the game-time temperature was 36 degrees — Arrieta also contributed to two runs at the plate. J.D. Davis homered for New York, but also committed two throwing errors at third base — including one that brought home Chicago’s first run. The Mets had won five of six.

Pirates at Tigers, PPD – Tigers-Pirates game postponed on snowy day in Detroit area

Tuesday night’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates has been postponed because of inclement weather. The game was called about two hours before the scheduled first pitch on a snowy day in the Detroit area. The teams will try to play a doubleheader Wednesday, with the first seven-inning game starting at 2:10 p.m. Eastern and the second scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Michael Fulmer is set to pitch the opener for Detroit, with Spencer Turnbull making his season debut in the second game. Tyler Anderson is scheduled to start the opener for Pittsburgh, with the Game 2 starter to be determined.

Rookie Jason Robertson had a goal and an assist in the first period, leading the Dallas Stars to a 5-2 win and a two-game sweep of the Detroit Red Wings. Dallas extended its win streak to four games. Joe Pavelski, Tanner Kero, Blake Comeau and Jamie Oleksiak also scored for the Stars, who are on a season-best eight-game point streak. Valtteri Filppula and Dylan Larkin scored for the Red Wings, who lost their third straight after a season-long three-game winning streak.

The Chicago Bears have re-signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson to a one-year contract. Gipson signed with the Bears last year after being released by Houston and started all 16 games, making 64 tackles and two interceptions. He has 25 interceptions over nine seasons with Cleveland (2012-15), Jacksonville (2016-18),

Frank Jackson scored 20 points, including a tiebreaking baseline drive in the final minute, lifting the Detroit Pistons to a 109-105 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Jackson was fouled on his basket with 29 seconds left. He missed the free throw but the Cavaliers couldn’t secure the rebound. Josh Jackson grabbed it and then scored to go up 107-103 with 16.5 seconds remaining, giving the Cavaliers their fifth loss in six games. Collin Sexton scored 28 points and Darius Garland added 23 for the Cavaliers. The backcourt scored the final 20 points for Cleveland.

Bulls 102, Celtics 96 – Vucevic scores 29, Bulls snap Celtics' 6-game streak, 102-96

Nikola Vucevic had 29 points and nine rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls held off the Boston Celtics 102-96. Coby White added 19 points and seven assists to help the Bulls snap Boston’s season-high six-game winning streak. Chicago has won its last two since a five-game skid. Boston led by 12 in second quarter but struggled to execute down the stretch and finished with 17 turnovers. Jaylen Brown had 23 points. Tatum posted the first triple-double of his career with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

Spurs 109, Pacers 94 – White's fast start helps lead San Antonio past Pacers 109-94

Derrick White helped San Antonio break away early by scoring 16 of his 25 points in the first quarter and leading the Spurs to a 109-94 victory at Indiana. Jakob Poeltel added 16 points as San Antonio won its second straight to stay in position for the play-in round. The Pacers were led by Malcolm Brogdon and Caris LeVert who each had 18 points in Indiana's third straight loss — this one minus three opening-night starters. White's scoring flurry allowed San Antonio to take a 36-21 lead after one quarter and the Spurs never let Indiana get closer than nine.

NBA – Antron Pippen, Scottie Pippen's oldest son, dies at 33

Antron Pippen, the son of Basketball Hall of Famer and once a top college prospect, has died. Scottie Pippen announced the death on his social media platforms, saying his oldest child died Sunday. He did not give a cause. Antron Pippen was an accomplished high school player in Georgia, then played college basketball at South Georgia Tech and Texas A&M International. Antron Pippen was 33 years old.

Red Sox 11, White Sox 4 – Red Sox top White Sox 11-4 on Patriots' Day with no Marathon

There was no Boston Marathon on Patriots’ Day, but there was plenty of base-running at Fenway Park this morning.  The Red Sox erupted for six runs in the first inning of an 11-4 rout of the White Sox. Kiké (KEE’-kay) Hernández led off with a replay-aided home run, and Bobby Dalbec worked a 14-pitch walk during the big rally.  J.D. Martinez and Alex Verdugo (vur-DOO’-goh) each had three hits, including a solo homer.  Lucas Giolito (jee-oh-LEE’-toh) was pulled in the second inning, charged with seven earned runs and eight hits. Position players Yermín (yehr-MEEN’) Mercedes and Danny Mendick each pitched an inning of relief.  The Marathon was moved to Oct. 11 because of Massachusetts limits on crowds during the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Patriots’ Day game has been played by the Red Sox since 1959.

A’s 3, Tigers 2 – A's rally to beat Tigers in ninth, win eighth straight

Matt Olson scored from second base on a fielding error by Detroit third baseman Jeimer Candelario with two outs in the ninth inning, rallying the Oakland Athletics past the Tigers 3-2 on Sunday for their eighth straight win. Sean Murphy hit a tying home run in the eighth as the A’s swept the four-game series. Olson hit a one-out double off Gregory Soto when Tigers center fielder Victor Reyes lost a high fly ball in the sun. After Matt Chapman struck out looking, Murphy walked before pinch-hitter Mitch Moreland hit a sharp grounder that rolled under Candelario’s glove into left field.

White Sox 3, Red Sox 2 / White Sox 5, Red Sox 1 – Mercedes homers, White Sox complete sweep over Red Sox

Yermín Mercedes opened Chicago’s three-run fourth inning with a long home run and the White Sox completed a sweep of their split-admission doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox with a 5-1 victory. Nick Madrigal had two hits and drove in two runs for Chicago, which climbed back to .500. Tim Anderson homered on the game’s first pitch in the opener and Dallas Keuchel pitched five solid innings in a 3-2 victory. The teams play the series finale Monday morning in Boston’s annual Patriots’ Day Game with a scheduled 11:05 a.m. first pitch.

Braves 13, Cubs 4 – Freeman, Braves pound Cubs 13-4, lose Acuña to injury

Freddie Freeman crushed one of Atlanta’s four homers in the first inning against Kyle Hendricks, leading the Braves to a potentially costly 13-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Travis d’Arnaud, Ehire Adrianza and Guillermo Heredia also connected during Atlanta’s fast start, and Heredia added his first career grand slam in the sixth for his first multihomer game. But the Braves’ offensive performance was overshadowed by the status of Ronald Acuña Jr. after he departed in the fourth due to pain in his lower abdominal muscles.

MLB – Patriots' Day at Fenway

The Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox begin at 11:05 a.m. at Fenway Park in the annual Patriots’ Day game. The event usually coincides with the Boston Marathon -- in past years, fans in the Green Monster seats would turn around to catch a glimpse of the leaders while others headed over after the final out to cheer on the runners in Kenmore Square, about a mile from the finish line. This year, the famous race has been moved to Oct. 11 due to coronavirus concerns. Chicago ace Lucas Giolito is slated to start the series finale against Nathan Eovaldi.

Hawks 129, Pacers 117 – Young, Capela power Hawks past Pacers, 129-117

Trae Young scored 34 points, Clint Capela had 25 points and 24 rebounds and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Indiana Pacers 129-117. Bogdan Bogdanovic and Kevin Huerter each chipped in 23 points and Young had 11 assists for the Hawks. They have won eight of 10 and are 17-6 under interim coach Nate McMillan. Malcolm Brogdon finished with 29 points and Domantas Sabonis and T.J. McConnell scored 18 apiece for Indiana. The Pacers had won five of seven on the road.
