Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31, Kansas City Chiefs 9

Buccaneers 31, Chiefs 9 – Tom Brady wins Super Bowl No. 7, Buccaneers beat Chiefs 31-9

Tom Brady was efficient and the Tampa Bay defense was devastating. The combination has led to the Buccaneers' second Super Bowl victory.  Brady threw for three first-half touchdowns and the Buccaneers stifled Kansas City's offense in a 31-9 win over the Chiefs. Brady threw to Rob Gronkowski for the first two TDs and found Antonio Brown in the end zone with six seconds left in the first half. Brady was 21 of 29 for 201 yards and no interceptions in winning a Super Bowl ring for a record-extending seventh time. Leonard Fournette and Ronald Jones II combined for 144 yards rushing, with Fournette scoring the game's final TD on a 27-yard run in the third quarter. Most of the Chiefs' 350 total yards came in the fourth quarter. Patrick Mahomes didn't go over 100 yards passing until the final minute of the third quarter. Mahomes was pressured throughout while completing just 26 of his 49 throws for 270 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. It's the first time Mahomes has been held under 10 points or lost by double digits since becoming a starter.

NFL – Super Bowl ads went for light humor. Not all succeeded

The mood on the field was tense during the Super Bowl as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trounced the Kansas City Chiefs. Off the field, brands sought to relieve the tension of the game — and the year — with lighthearted commercials stuffed with celebrities and nostalgic characters. Cadillac updated the film “Edward Scissorhands,”  M&M’s enlisted Dan Levy to show how a bag of M&M’s given as an apology can help people come together. And Will Ferrell teamed with GM — and Awkwafina and Kenan Thompson — on a madcap cross-country dash to promote electric vehicles.

NFL – The biggest win: In 2020, NFL found ways to play every game

More than the youth of Patrick Mahomes or the agelessness of Tom Brady, the most compelling story surrounding this year’s Super Bowl was that it was happening at all. It took nearly 1 million COVID-19 tests, thousands of Zoom meetings and an untold amount of flexibility for the NFL to not miss a single of the 269 regular-season and postseason games amid a worldwide pandemic. Game number 269, the Super Bowl, was a fascinating matchup of young (Mahomes) vs. old (Brady) — the Kansas City Chiefs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was to be played in a one-third-full stadium and with millions of fingers crossed around the country. The NFL and society are hoping the big game won’t turn into the mother of super-spreader events.

Chicago Blackhawks 2, Dallas Stars 1 – OT

Red Wings 4, Panthers 1 – Smith, Red Wings win for 1st time in 9 games, beat Panthers

Givani Smith had a goal and an assist as Detroit Red Wings won for the first time in nine games, beating the Florida Panthers 4-1. Marc Staal scored for the first time with Detroit, Robby Fabbri and Vladislav Namestnikov added goals and Troy Stecher had two assists. Goaltender Thomas Greiss stopped 36 shots for his first win with Detroit. Alex Wennberg scored for the Panthers. Florida became the last NHL team to lose in regulation this season. 

Blackhawks 2, Stars 1 – OT – DeBrincat scores twice for Blackhawks in 2-1 OT win at Stars

Alex DeBrincat scored both Chicago goals, including the winner 2:56 into overtime, and the Blackhawks won 2-1 to hand the Dallas Stars their first home loss this season. DeBrincat has four goals and two assists in his three games since returning from a four-game absence because of COVID-19 protocols. Patrick Kane assisted on both goals.

NFL – Super Bowl LV – Chiefs aim to repeat as Super Bowl champs against Buccaneers

The Kansas City Chiefs will try to become the ninth team and the first since the New England Patriots in 2003 and '04 to repeat as Super Bowl champions when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. It will be the first time the winning quarterbacks of the previous two titles have met in the Super Bowl in the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Bucs counterpart Tom Brady, who won his previous six titles with New England. The Chiefs beat the Tampa Bay 27-24 in Week 12. Tampa Bay is the first team to play in a Super Bowl in its home stadium.

NFL – Super Bowl LV – Physical secondary play in Super Bowl could test officials

The Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers got to the Super Bowl using a similar strategy in the secondary. Their cornerbacks played press coverage and got physical with receivers, trying to disrupt routes and timing in hopes of slowing down the opposing passing game. Whether either team will be able to do that on Sunday will depend in large part on how closely the officials call the game in the secondary. Both teams have gotten away with some physical play so far in the playoffs with only a handful of penalties against defensive backs.

Blackhawks 6, Hurricanes 4 – DeBrincat helps Blackhawks beat Hurricanes 6-4

Alex DeBrincat scored two goals in the third period, helping the Chicago Blackhawks edge the Carolina Hurricanes 6-4. Patrick Kane had a goal and three assists for the Blackhawks, who bounced back nicely after losing 4-3 to the Hurricanes in a shootout Tuesday night. Dominik Kubalik had a goal and two assists, and Mattias Janmark finished with a goal and an assist. DeBrincat snapped a 4-4 tie when he converted a backhand off a rebound 12:22 into the third.

NBA – NBA tells teams it plans March 7 All-Star Game in Atlanta

The NBA told its teams on Thursday night that it expects to finalize plans in the coming week to have an All-Star Game in Atlanta. The game and skills competitions will be held on March 7, the NBA told clubs in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press. It remains unclear when players would have to report to Atlanta and how testing will work there, or if fans will be part of the game. The league said it expects to agree to terms with the National Basketball Players Association on testing protocols that will apply to all players during the break.
