  • "With Communion"
On the Road to Emmaus, the disciples walk in the midst of their grief discussing the events of the crucifixion. Jesus approaches them but they are kept from recognizing him. Did Jesus prevent them from recognizing Him? Perhaps he wished to impart some truth before they were distracted by their joy. Or, maybe it was Jesus that kept them from recognizing Him, but their grief. Our emotions can sometimes cloud our capacity to see what is right there in front of us. Often when distracted we don't see Jesus moving in our lives but He's there--right there with us. Sometimes it's when we look back that we see how God has been pursuing us all along.

  • "With Community"
During times of need, there is a tendency to isolate. But what we need to do is come back into Christian community. When we fall short of our calling we can experience shame. Peter experiences shame after his denial of Christ. But the others, pull him back into the group. Even in the midst of betrayal and shame Christian fellowship welcomes you back in.
But maybe shame is not the issue for you. Maybe you struggle with doubt like Thomas. Sometimes our doubts are so grand we wonder if we can even approach community at all. Will I be welcomed in? Even in doubt and rejection, there is space for you in the fellowship. Community is a gift from God. We are designed to persevere and strive together. You don't walk alone. In times of shame and doubt, you found a community that welcomes you and through this experience, you, too, will be transformed.

  • "With Peace"
Points in time in which different things align are particularly meaningful. In particular, there is a point of power in a story when heaven and earth collide. In this scripture, we see this intersection. Here the disciples worried about persecution gather behind locked doors. Jesus appears to them and at that moment we see this beautiful alignment of both earthly things and heavenly things. Throughout scripture when these moments occur, when the Kingdom of heaven is here on earth, there is at the heart of the experience a pervading feeling of peace.

  • "With Promise"
“In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” The critical question is, "How long is a little while? What does that mean?" In this scripture, Jesus is pointing to a single moment in history, the moment when the disciples will no longer see him, and he acknowledges that there will be grief and pain. And this is a timeless reality for all of us—we WILL grieve. But, Jesus also points to an eternal truth—your grief WILL turn to joy. This is a promise that we can lean into whenever we are experiencing grief in our own lives. Wrestle through your grief with the Lord. Because Jesus promises that when you call on Him, He will be there. And the pain of momentary grief will be forgotten in the birth of eternal joy.
