  • My Best Strategy for Direct Sales Leaders Looking for Magic in the Madness of Your Leadership Style

Hey there savvy leaders! Welcome to episode 28! If you feel as though there is always something to be done in your business with never enough time in the day this episode is for you!

When it Feels Like There’s Never Enough Time in the Day as a Direct Sales Leader

Wouldn’t it be great to feel like everything was done? To feel as though there were never any loose ends hanging in the air with your business?

To feel like your to-do list was complete. And to enjoy the freedom and peace of mind of not feeling like you’re always behind.

Well, it is realistic and one of the many benefits my clients tell me they didn’t think was possible. They used to accept the fact that there would always be something left undone, they would always feel disorganized and this was simply the nature of the business.

It doesn’t have to be! I promise you.

Even if you already use power hours or time blocking, this is a new way to approach these strategies. And if you’re not using power hours or power time blocks of any length, this is your formal invitation to adopt these strategies in a way that will work for you and your leadership style.

When Your Biggest Challenge is to Get More Organized as a Direct Sales Leader

All high-achieving leaders in Direct Sales that I talk with share the same struggle. They think their biggest strength should be, to be more organized. In every sense of the word at different times, and for some, all at the same time. More organized with time, their schedule, their plan for the month to unfold, their communication with their team, their own personal business, and their own personal development as a leader.

That’s a tough place to be and stay. To never feel organized enough.

Today’s episode is about utilizing common organizational tools, but using them in a way that works for you and your personal leadership style.

Our focus today is on the leadership style that’s more “magic in the madness” if you will. A leader who doesn’t love goal setting, planning, schedules, following a to-do list, or even having regular power hours. This leader is someone who is more likely to want to be with and around people. If this is you, keep listening, and bravo! You’re working to your strengths.

Hold tight, if you’re the opposite leadership style because the next episode is for you personally, but this episode will be critical for you to soak up because you absolutely have leaders on your team that have an opposite leadership style than you, a more “magic in the madness” style. You’ll want to keep listening so you can better understand and relate to her and even share this episode with her.

Ok, so the number one strategy is to work with themes. Identify different themes to better organize your time and efforts so you can spend more purposeful time with the people you’re in front of.

This is about taking things to the next level. Not fixing anything you’re doing wrong. Because you’re not. Embrace and channel your personal leadership style and let themes direct your strengths.

How do you use themes to be more organized? Well, first you’ll loosely choose a timeframe. A month, a week, and/or a day. Then you’ll choose a topic.

For example, if your theme for the month is new team members, you’ll apply this filter to your conversations and communication. Weekly, you can use this theme to direct your energy and efforts. Daily, you can use this mindset at the beginning and end of your days to check in and know you’re being organized with your time because you have a focus.

  • The Difference Between Courage & Confidence as a Direct Sales Leader

Welcome to episode 27! One thing many high-achieving women in Direct Sales tell me they want is even more confidence in their leadership skills. Even with all the success, a personal growth journey includes the drive and desire for continuous self-improvement. It’s admirable. Really.

Personal Growth Journey as a High Achieving Leader in Direct Sales

And it doesn’t have to feel like you’ll never reach it. To always strive for better simply means there is always room to grow and develop. It doesn’t mean you haven’t grown or haven’t developed.

And this is certainly obvious when you take a moment to reflect on where you started. More so, who you were when you first started your Direct Sales journey and who you’ve become along the path of hard work, dedication, persistence, and true grit, to accomplish all that you have.

Because the leader you’ve been is not the leader you need to become to get where you want to go is so important, the difference between courage and confidence is a key concept to embrace.

You can find the full transcript at crazybigreams.biz/27.

You see, confidence only comes when you’ve exercised courage, time and time again, to put yourself out there. To pursue the relationships you have pursued. You’ve exercised the courage to rise to the occasion. To be a servant leader. To put people before everything else.

You’ve been courageous every time you’ve worked when you didn’t want to or didn’t think you had it in you to keep going. To sacrifice all that you have. To work as a businesswoman, not as a hobbyist. All of this took courage. And with each milestone that you met with courage, the outcome included an increase in confidence.

Why You Want Courage Over Confidence as a Direct Sales Leader

Confidence doesn’t come only from experiencing success. In fact, I would argue, it comes every time you’ve mustered the courage to keep going, especially after disappointments, hard days, or relationships that didn’t last.

Confidence comes from situations you had to find courage for like women who have chosen to pursue this business, but did so with someone else, after you invested in them, or chose to pursue a different company.

A longtime customer that fell away. A backward step in rank for your personal business. The team member that threw in the towel when you know how amazing she is and how her business could be if she just stuck with it.

All of these situations required you to have the courage to keep going. And with that courage came even more confidence. You can’t build confidence without having the courage to take yourself from one step to the very next step.

Asking for more confidence as a leader means you have to be willing to be open to the situations in your business that will grow and foster your courage. We simply can’t build one without the other. We can’t build and grow confidence without demonstrating courage.

I think this example demonstrates it best. My husband is in the military. He’s had a long 28+ year career and he’s still on active duty.

The military is dedicated to the Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. It’s not Honor, Confidence, and Commitment. It’s Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These Core Values build the foundation of trust and leadership for our military.

  • Navigating Your Role as Direct Sales Leader Through Big Life Changes

Life happens. As they say, life is what happens when we’re busy making plans. How have you learned to navigate your Direct Sales business through life’s big ups and downs? Or have you found these times simply unfold and you haven’t thought to be particularly intentional about this?

Today I’m sharing my recent big life event and how I go about navigating a forward-moving business with 3 helpful strategies for your next big life event.

You can find the full transcript at crazybigreams.biz/26.

Since my last episode, well,  I had a baby! We welcomed a sweet little bundle of love to our family. All 4 lbs of him came seven weeks early, yet in his own perfect timing.

Because he arrived well before his due date, and I was admitted without knowing I wouldn’t be going back home that day, it was all a bit unexpected.

We are over the moon in love with this cutie. He’s being well cared for in the NICU and we can’t wait to bring him home. If you’ve had a NICU experience you know it’s not for the faint of heart. He’s doing well, yet it’s still not a walk in the park.

I’m grateful the NICU is open 24/7 and we can go any time of day or night and stay as long as we need to. Yes, it’s excruciating walking out of his room every time I have to leave. It gets more difficult. Not easier.

You may even be thinking to yourself, what are you doing on this podcast right now? Go see that baby! You’ve got quite a bit on your plate, what are you doing here?

Choices Are Key to Fulfilling Your Role as Direct Sales Leader

I’m here because I want to be. Harmony is important to me. And well, that’s precisely why I’m here. To discuss how we navigate times like these while running a thriving business if we choose. And that’s the key message today. Choice. It’s easy to go on autopilot and keep plugging away.

I did think long and hard about if I was taking time away from my business and if so, how much. What would that look like? What do I want? Honestly, my business does not feel like work.

It’s incredibly rewarding, so fulfilling, it gives me personal purpose, having just a little something, ok a big something, to call my own. It’s a creative outlet for me. I feel more myself and more at peace when I am serving you and my clients.

That said, this big life change has been an opportunity for me to be intentional and truly think about how to navigate my role as a business owner.

Take this podcast for example. I thought long and hard about if I would miss an episode. I really didn’t want to miss any. I look forward to this and I love doing it.

I was in the hospital for 6 long days and nights. I was admitted the same day my last new episode aired, always on Tuesdays. I was discharged the following Monday. I had time to create a new episode and have it air on schedule.

I made the conscious decision to skip that week. It wasn’t an easy decision. But it was the right

decision for me that week. Just as my decision to create and air this episode with you is the right one.

I absolutely could have and still could disappear. Return to all other things at some point in the future. And in many ways that is exactly what I did, for my own needed timeline. I’m here because I want to be. I’m here because I can be.

Three Strategies to Navigate Life’s Big Ups and Downs as a High Achiever in Direct Sales

Here are the 3 strategies I personally use to navigate business while personally navigating life’s big ups and downs and what I recommend you consider the next time you find yourself in a unique spot yourself.

  • Do You Need to Get Back-to-Basics in Your Direct Sales Business?

If you were working more like you did when you first started your business, what would you be doing differently?

Have you found that as you worked your way up and built a large team, you’ve taken your foot off the gas and relaxed a little? Relaxed a little in doing the things that helped you build your business in the beginning?

Let’s tackle it! You can find the full transcript at crazybigreams.biz/25.

It’s easy to slow down on these activities as your team grows and you mentor other business builders. You’re not alone. By any stretch.

Most of the Direct Sales, high-achieving women I speak with have shared this same experience. They’ve slowed down on the very same activities that helped them build their early success.

How High Achievers in Direct Sales Lose Focus on Business Basics

This typically happens for two reasons. The significant sudden growth in your team. Inconsistencies.

    1)    A growing team is a good problem! There is a distinct point in time where your team experiences significant growth that’s simply difficult to keep up with.

Let’s take a second to acknowledge this growth is a direct result of the very back-to-basics activities we’re talking about! Bravo!

With this team growth, suddenly you have to spend time and focus on onboarding, and getting new team members up and running with quick wins. This requires a re-distribution in priorities among your time. Dividing your time and attention between mentoring and personal business building.

    2)    Inconsistencies. Getting away from the basics can happen subtly over time. You may always intend to get back to those activities that helped you build your business in the beginning.

And you do, but the same consistency you were dedicated to when you started your personal business is simply different now. The landscape is entirely different in your responsibilities and the opportunities regarding how you choose to spend your time. Yes, it’s still a choice.

I’ve learned a lot of leaders feel it’s not a choice. They’ve gotten stuck and in a bit of a routine. Losing sight of the fact they can shake things up, wipe their calendar clean and make fresh new choices. Can you relate?

You are most certainly not alone in getting away from the basics. Most high achievers genuinely want to and need to, get back to the basics of their own personal business-building activities.

The Importance of Getting Back to Basics with Your Direct Sales Business

It’s important to do so for at least 2 reasons:

First, it helps you keep a thriving business, team, and continued growth.

Second, it also helps you stay authentic as a leader in that you’re doing the same things you’re asking your team to do. You’re continuing to have the same excitement and struggles they are.

This keeps you relatable, connected, and able to appreciate their experiences. You can have real conversations with them. You know exactly how to coach them through it because you’ve also just experienced much of the same.

How you go about getting back to basics does not have to look the same as when you first started out building your business. In many ways, it can’t.

Where to Start as You Shift Your Time and Get Back to Basics in Your Direct Sales Business

Here are the 5 key points to consider when you’re re-distributing your priorities on where to start getting back to the basics:

    1.     Take care of your existing customers. Truly. What did you do in the beginning that you got away from? Thank you’s? Celebrating birthdays with a handwritten note? Reach out with a “thinking of you”?

For the rest of my key points g

  • As a High Achiever in Direct Sales, Do You Know Where Your Money's Going?

Hello and welcome to episode 24! Where is your money going?! Ouch.

I know, it’s a personal question. That’s why we’re here. To get personal about your growth and development as a woman and a High Achiever in Direct Sales. So let’s get to it.

You can find the full transcript of this episode at crazybigdreams.biz/24.

Do Your Current Spending Habits Align with Your Personal Goals as a Direct Sales Leader?

The message today isn’t about judgment or limiting spending. It is about awareness and ensuring your money is going in directions that align with your values and priorities.

After all, you work hard for it. It’s well earned. You’ve created a business with systems that allow for a spending plan. Let’s make sure it’s aligned with both what’s important to you now and what you want for your future.

If you haven’t yet listened to Ep – 5 Does Every Future Dollar Have a Job? I recommend listening to that episode after this one! It’s my number one downloaded episode, so far. You can find it at crazybigdreams.biz/5.

Why Knowing Where Your Money Goes is Important Even for High Achievers in Direct Sales.

The tricky part is when you’re not living beyond your means, and hopefully, you’re not, and you earn a very comfortable living, this can feel unnecessary. Or we can feel, I’m ok, I know day to day where my money is going for the most part and we’re fine. I spend where I want and responsibly and I don’t feel the need to take a closer look. Ok. Great.

But it’s not only about that. It’s about being as intentional as you can be, respecting the time, energy, sacrifice, and hard work you put into building the business that you have. Really take a fresh look and let yourself get excited by all the opportunities that are right there. It’s possible you haven’t seen it because you haven’t taken a detailed look in a while.

It could also be about doing this for yourself so if you have kiddos, you can teach them to do the same. Ah-ha!

My husband and I recently started tracking our every expense. We’ve done this in the past at various times. It’s a great check-in. It’s important to actually know, literally, where the money is going. We’re both fairly independent with day-to-day, smaller expenses. But as we all know, these can add up.

I worked with a client that didn’t even know her and her husband’s coffee spending was over $500/month; this was both single beverages on the go as well as brewed from home beans. They were coffee connoisseurs for sure.

I’ll admit, when my husband first suggested tracking our every expense most recently, my eyes probably got a little bigger. I felt an initial hesitation…like okay, but why? Eek, um, alright, lights do it.

Maybe I responded this way because I’m usually the one to suggest we do this. But it was also likely because I didn’t truly know where every expense was going. I’m not exactly sure what the totals at month-end look like. Is it on track with where we want to be? I know we don’t live beyond our means. But are my spending habits aligned with my priorities and goals?

I think so. But to truly know, it requires taking a measurable look.

I know, this doesn’t initially sound like fun. Money is a big topic with lots of emotion behind it. Especially when it comes to our relationships. So let’s keep it light and fun for now.

  • Drop This One Word Now to Instill more Belief in Your Team as a Direct Sales Leader

Hello savvy leaders! Here we are for episode 23!

The one single word that will serve you well to drop from all vocabulary.

    Should.

Should, by definition, is used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness. It is typically used when criticizing someone's actions. As I always say. No one likes to be should on.

You can find the full transcript of this episode at crazybigdreams.biz/23.

We don’t typically intend to criticize someone when we’re suggesting they ‘should’ do this or that. Often times it casually comes out in conversation. “Ooh, you should totally read this book.” I catch myself saying that a lot. “You should come with us to the park.”

Certainly, there are instances when we do say it and mean it with criticism. “You should put
different shoes on.” When speaking to our kiddos. “You should eat more vegetables.”

Communication for Direct Sales Leaders to Instill More Belief in Your Team Members

The big problem with ‘should’ is when communicating with our team members it does the opposite of instilling belief in them. I know this is one of your top goals; to have them believe in themselves more. Dropping should from your communication will help with this tremendously. Here’s why:

The trouble with “should” is that regardless of how we intend it to come out, your team member can be hearing judgment & criticism. It’s difficult not to. It almost always sounds like criticism, judgment, and advice, unsolicited much of the time.

Even if we are asked for advice, including the word should leaves the other person to think they didn’t get it right on their own. They need to be directed and told how to go forward.

It doesn’t leave room or space to lift someone up. It doesn’t give them the benefit of the doubt that they see another option or could have discovered the way forward on their own.

People won’t remember what you did or even what you said. They will remember how you made them feel. Using the word should almost never leaves someone feeling good.

There are so many different ways, and words to choose, to leave others feeling good, included, capable, worthy, and enough.

How to Help Your Direct Sales Team with Communication

For example, if a team member asks you how to go about talking with someone they feel would be a great fit for your business opportunity and she asks you “How do I have that conversation?” Instead of saying, “you should just talk to her” or “you should bring up the topic” or “you should ask her ….”

Instead, you can respond with “You’re so easy to talk to, Alicia. How would it feel to ask her….?” Or “She will likely be flattered that you thought of her. What if you start by complimenting her on why you feel she would be a great fit?”

Do you see how dropping should altogether simply has a much different tone?

How  Top Leaders in Direct Sales Stop Criticizing  Themselves

So let me ask you. How do you feel when your self-talk includes should? Not very good, right? You’re getting down on yourself and criticizing yourself. “I should have contacted Emily weeks ago. I should have followed up with Jessica already. I should stop being so pushy, sensitive, doubtful… “ and the list goes on.

I invite you after listening here to simply notice. Raise your awareness around when you are using the word should with yourself and with others.

  • The "No-Book, Book Club" Strategy for Your Direct Sales Team

Welcome to episode 22! Have you hosted book clubs for your team? Are they well attended? Do you find that most read and finish the book? If so, GREAT! Keep it up!

For those on your team that you’re not reaching through book club, add my “No-Book, Book-Club” strategy and connect with more team members.

On the flip side, If you have been hosting book clubs, but struggle with engagement, participation, or interest and it’s more work than effective, my “No-Book, Book-Club” strategy is for you and your team!

You can find the full transcript of this episode at crazybigdreams.biz/22.

Ok, I love book clubs. I tend to read a wider variety of books by authors I wouldn’t normally pursue on my own. Not to mention, the discussion is rich and offers a perspective that I don’t always see on my own.

I always get practical and thought-provoking tips from my mastermind book club. It’s always valuable.

Why Book Club Doesn’t Work for Every Direct Sales Team

All that said, book club is not for everyone. Even those that start off interested in the book, and participate, can get discouraged and stop attending if they fall behind in reading.

Some people feel they simply don’t have time for reading. Those that do feel they have the time when it starts, may end up too busy to continue before the book is wrapped and the club is done meeting.

The New “No-Book-Book-Club” for Direct Sales Leaders and Their Team

My strategy for you is to offer a “No-Book, Book-Club” to your team. Personal growth and development still happens. Conversation can still take place. You can still meet about content to offer a belief building, personal development, and connection point to your team.

This can all happen in addition to your well-running book clubs or instead of. You get to decide. Better yet, let your team decide.

A “No-Book, Book-Club” is not centered around a book, but focused on a podcast! Yes! A podcast. It doesn’t have to be focused on network marketing. You can pick any podcast covering life-enhancing, personal development topics that would be timely for your team.

It can be a single podcast episode from any podcast you feel your team would benefit from.

Or, you can listen to four different episodes from the same podcast to cover each week of the month.

There are many podcasts that have shorter episodes ranging from 5 to 20 minutes. Others are up to an hour. I recommend choosing based on message and content vs. time. Either way, it will be much less of a time commitment than reading a book.

I recommend choosing an episode, but know why you’re choosing it and why you feel it would be timely for your team.

Discussion Questions for Your Direct Sales “No-Book, Book-Club”

Create a handful of discussion questions. Here are a few general, question recommendations that could apply to any episode.

    1.     How was that for you?

    2.     What was your top one or two take away’s?

    3.     What will you do differently after listening, if anything?

    4.     Is there someone on your team that would benefit from hearing this episode?

  • How Top Women in Direct Sales Create a Shift with a Gratitude Reset

Hey savvy leaders! Welcome to episode 21.

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

One of my favorite quotes by Melody Beattie.

Top Women in Direct Sales Problem Solve for Their Teams

If you’re feeling tired or slightly burned out by being the person so many of your team members bring their frustrations to, or come to you with questions you know they can find the answers to themselves, it’s time for a reset. Let’s create a shift.

It’s so easy and understandable to get bogged down by these scenarios. You’re in a position where you tend to hear the frustrations. The things your team wishes could be different and yet you’re not in a position to change these things. Maybe sometimes you even agree. But it’s more up to your company than something within your realm of scope.

What is within your reach is how you sustain yourself, build yourself up, and create a shift. The answer: A Gratitude Reset.

You can find the full transcript at crazybigdreams.biz/21.

The Difference A Gratitude Practice Makes for Women in Direct Sales

There is a difference between feeling grateful and practicing gratitude.

We can feel grateful in fleeting moments without practicing gratitude. Yet a gratitude practice develops a deep-seated internal shift where attention, focus, and needs drift away from us and onto others. Our thoughts and actions become embedded with that part of our business that calls us to work for something bigger than ourselves.

A gratitude practice is something you dedicate yourself to. You spend purposeful time, not a lot of time, but time and attention focusing on not only what you’re grateful for, but why you’re grateful for it.

An impactful way to do this is to keep a gratitude journal. Now, if you’re not into journaling, or if the word journal turns you off, pick a different word. This is simply too powerful to get hung up on a word that doesn’t resonate with you. Pick one that does.

For today’s conversation, I’m going to keep it simple and just say gratitude journal.

How Top Women in Direct Sales Start a Gratitude Practice

I invite you to start a daily practice of keeping a gratitude journal.

    Here’s how to begin.

Use something you feel drawn to write in. Maybe it’s something you already have on hand. Maybe you want to go find something new. Don’t overthink it or let this step get in the way of starting.

But yes, you’ll use pen to paper because it’s much more personal and effective. Your handwriting is unique to you. It’s a more intimate experience to write than to type or use an electronic device.

At the end, or the beginning of every day, write down what you’re grateful for that day. Maybe it was an interaction with a person. Possibly an event. A big or small accomplishment. A moment in time from your day that comes to mind as you sit down to write.

Use the writing style that fits you best. A bullet list. Paragraphs. A few sentences. Story form. Maybe you like to draw. Some days you may use a combination of all of these styles. There are no rules or guidelines to this. Let it be what speaks to you most on any given day.

You’ll also write why you feel grateful for this person, event, or moment. This is the big difference in having a gratitude practice that creates a shift within us. The why. It gives a deeper meaning. It pulls in the emotion behind what you’re grateful for.

The Five Most Important Things List for High Achievers in Direct Sales

    Here’s how this works effectively.

Every day you’ll make a list of the 5 most important things you need to do the next day.

Now, this is most effective if you’re starting from annual goals, broken down to quarterly goals, monthly goals, and weekly goals. Or, your list can become reactive. More of a ‘to-do’ list than a ‘most-important-things’ list.

Setting Goals as a High Achiever in Direct Sales

If you don’t already have specific annual, quarterly, and monthly goals determined, this is essential. Let’s grab a strategy session together. Click over to crazybigdreams.biz to discover if this would be beneficial for you.

Center Your Direct Sales Leadership Focus

For your 5 most-important-things-list, you’ll write down the essential, business building, leadership development, and team connecting things you need to do the next day.

Start by reviewing what happened and what got done today. Then you’ll create those essential things that need to happen tomorrow to move you, your team, and your business forward.

Some days you’ll have to forward something from your current list that didn’t get done. That’s just real life.

Keep your list to no more than 5 items. There’s nothing more defeating than creating a list and never getting to cross everything off of it for a day.

You’ll also get really good at identifying what important thing goes on what day. For example, if you’re making your most-important-thing list there will be people and activities that will pop to mind, that don’t need to be done the very next day.

Go to a future day’s list and capture it there. Don’t let this technique, however, get you in the habit of pushing things ahead. Be decisive and intentional.

You’ll first make your list, simply a brain dump if you will, of the most-important-things. If you capture more than 5 that’s fine. Determine what needs to happen tomorrow and place additional things on a future list.

Direct Sales List Lovers: Are You Using These Impactful Strategies?

Now, if you’re already a master list maker, let’s weigh these next impactful strategies for your list-making. Let’s see if you’re already applying these things. If not, this will take your list-making and your organization to the next level.

Take each item on your list and chunk it down. It’s important to prune down each thing on your list into the smallest, actionable item.

For example, as you brain dump you may capture something like, update my onboarding system, or create an onboarding system. This is an important business development &  team development ‘most-important-thing’. It’s not small enough to tackle though.

How You End Your Day as a Female Leader in Direct Sales Matters

Today is dedicated to how you are ending your day.

If you’ve ever taken a yoga class, you’ll know there is typically always a purposeful ending. I’m also a yoga teacher and have been for years. At the end of every class, before we exchange “Namasté” our palms are pressed together with arms lengthened overhead.

As we lower our hands to our forehead, I say “think positive thoughts”. As hands lower past our mouths I say “speak kind words”, and as hands rest at our hearts I say “with a grateful heart, Namasté.”

I love giving my fellow yoga students a familiar and intentional end to our practice. Can you feel how this would pull things all together for their experience at the end?

A class that was maybe difficult, physically or emotionally. A class that maybe disappointed them. They were expecting something different.

A class that had them experiencing just what they came for and a little bit more. They’re so glad they showed up. It stretched that tight area and helped them feel strong in more ways than one.

Regardless of how they felt the class went for them that particular day, I end with intention, sending each person back out into the world, and to whatever awaits them on the other side of the door, with peace.
