Creative Contact w/ Kia Orion

If y'all from Philly then you've probably (see: definitely) heard of Ill Fated Natives. They were featured recently as one of the city's top 19 young people making noise and I was lucky enough to kick it with their bassist, Bets, for this weeks podcast.

Bets and IFN are creating the soundtrack for the revolution. Bets and I talk about his experience growing up Haitian-American in NYC/Philly, the history of the band, and why it's important to make music that's meaningful. Bets also gives me advice on how to take part in hip-hop as a white boy without causing more harm than good.

Interview starts around 6:30 and we have way too much fun in this one. Peep it and let me know what you think!

IFN UPCOMING SHOWS:

Tommy Rowland is a Born Hustler. You might know him as the hip-hop artist "Rowlan" who has been hitting more than a million streams a month and is working every day on being one of the biggest names in music.

Rowlan gave me an afternoon in New York last week to drop some knowledge about what it's like chasing the dream and how much work it takes to get there. We talk about his time selling phones at Verizon, his advice to up-and-coming musicians on management, and of course, his pet pig Leila. I listened to every Rowlan interview and podcast I could find before our meeting so that we didn't talk about the same 'ol shit.

Interview starts around 2 minutes and we get DEEP. Peep it and let me know what you think!

ONE OF DEM ONES. This episode is mostly me laughing with one of my biggest mentors and dearest friends, Jerame Hawkins aka Hawkeye Productions.

J is the Director of the Youth Advocate Program in Ithaca and also runs multiple online businesses. If you're into old school hip-hop and what it means to be an artist in this day and age this is the one for you.

We talk about the definition of success, making 26gs off a Blues Clues commercial, and why persistence beats passion. I also fumble my way through the story of how we met when I was 19 wearing cut off jorts and a floppy hat.

Interview starts around 7 minutes. If you dig this one I have a feeling a part II and III will happen in the future. Peep it and let me know what you think!

P.S. J and I kicked it in Ithaca when I was home for the holiday, and he was generous enough to let me intrude on his family time. I want to shout out his little girl and fiancé for letting me steal him for a couple minutes and who were hanging with us throughout the interview.

P.S. It was rule #4080...you'll know when you hear it lol

Maryam is easily one of the most woke/articulate people I know. If she's not at a rally fighting the patriarchy she's posting ridiculously good looking pictures on social. She's one of those people that just kicks ass at everything. I'm not bitter about it (maybe a little...)

Maryam came by the kitchen to talk about growing up Muslim-American and how she has been able to find a balance between the two cultures. We go DEEP on this one. She helps me understand how privilege plays into white artistry and what I can do as an aspiring musician to make a difference. We also talk about upcoming UK acts you don't want to miss, Leonardo DiCaprio not aging well, and the importance of seeing yourself reflected in media. I know this one runs a little long but give it a listen but I promise it's worth it.

P.S. If I sound desperate for her validation throughout the interview it's because I am. I just wanted her to like me and I'm not sure if I accomplished that or not. You'll have to listen and find out. Let me know what you think of the episode and if you'd like to continue the conversation with her on social you can find all of her info below.

P.P.S. HAPPY NEW YEAR LET'S GET IT

This man has seen it all. A young man growing up in North Philadelphia Spiz The Prophet has a perspective unlike anyone I've ever met. Sharing his incredible journey to Hell and back I was lucky enough to sit down with Spiz a few weeks ago during a snow storm in the city. We spoke for close to 3 hours. I chopped it down to a few of the most impactful stories, but when I say this man drops GEMS that's an understatement. This is one you don't want to miss. Give it a listen and let me know what you think. Let's just say they don't call him The Prophet for nothing.

Let's talk turkey. Larry Brown is a West Philadelphia native who specializes in residential and commercial property all throughout PA. When his dreams of playing ball got destroyed by a thieving coach (yo fuck that dude for real tho), he turned his focus to business. If you're into property or real estate you're going to want to hear what he has to say. Larry talks about dropping out of college with one semester left, working at Vitamin Shoppe, and tips on how to survive in one of the hottest real estate markets in the game.

The talk with Larry starts around 4:20.
