I can't tell you how many Robin Landa books I own. I even have multiple copies of the same book. That is how much I love what Robin creates. This book was no different. I have the physical copy and the audible version.

Robin Landa is a professor, an author, a designer, and an inspiration. She has written over 20 books (25 I think), I use them with clients, in my creative practice, and in my research. This book was great at setting a framework for new ideas. It gives suggestions on how to tackle projects differently. There are tons of stories and examples inside the pages.

Back in 2018 my friend Kim Panella and I decided to take the month of February to love on our friends, mentors, co-workers and people starting in the field, also taking a week to do some self-love. This is not limited to Designers only but any Creative.

WEEK 1 is ENERGIZE

Take someone to coffee, bring someone an espresso, soda, or red bull.

Post an energizing quote and tag a friend who could use some energizing (remember to use the #loveondesigners tag)

Then snap a photo and use the hashtag #loveondesigners when you post it and tag me @creativesignite when you post.

Week 2 is ENCOURAGE

This week I have an old friend and fellow creative entrepreneur, Brian Perry. Brian is a singer, songwriter, life-coach, and author. We are going to talk about his latest book, "The Myth of Certainty" and his journey with mental health.

As we wrap up this month of focusing on getting our thoughts and minds in a place that works for us not against us, we talk about where we thought we'd be. Often our dreams and our ability to create a plan to get us to that dream is unclear or fuzzy.

There were so many moments in the book where I was hit by stingers that I had been through, or things I am facing. Being an entrepreneur, sacrificing so many things, and getting beat down by by inner critic is hard. We are going to talk about how Brian has made a difference, kept going, and taken on new challenges despite how hard it can be.

I often tell myself things I should be doing, or things I should be improving, or things I should be learning. But there are only 24 hours in everyday and we are supposed to sleep for one third of those hours.

I am teaching a class about self promotion on social media. In class I asked the students how they use social media. Most stated that they consume but rarely share. If they do share it is not their design work.

They said they were scattered and weren't sure what to post. One student said he posts things he is proud of.

And I thought afterwards, if I waited until I was proud of something I would never post either.

Social Media and self promotion like any campaign should be planned. UH OH there I go shoulding again.

The question is how do I share what I am learning and not feel like a fraud or an imposter. If I tell myself I will start sharing when I don't feel like an imposter, I will probably never start sharing.

This week I am excited to have invited a few friends on to talk about this 30 day challenge we have embarked on. You can pick it up and join in anytime. It doesn't have to be in line with the beginning of a month. It only has to be something that you want to do to stretch your creativity and imagination.

We are diving into how different we all think and how we see different things and sometimes the same things in the same shapes.

Maybe you struggle to draw a peacock perfectly? I would answer, is it necessary to have a picture perfect peacock or which lines do you have to have to communicate peacock. Which lines do you have to add to communicate what you see in the shape?

Sandi Hester is an artist and has a fantastic channel on YouTube called "Bits of an Artist's Life." I found her this summer and she was just the medicine I needed.

She is always growing and trying new things in her art. Sandi's process really struck me because she takes limited tools out and does many variations on one scene. She takes visual notes of a place then once back in the studio on the bigger canvas she takes all her visual notes and constructs a larger painting.

I know we do sketches as designers but for some reason her process seemed different and more freeing to me. She was able to explore and seems to always know something else can fix it. She doesn't seem to get caught up in the deadline or the fact that she already made a background. She embraces the fact that she can paint over it and start again.

This starting over or the ability to fix it was exactly what I needed to hear this summer. I am so excited to introduce you to my new friend, Sandi Hester. We are going to talk about how her faith plays a role in her artist's journey. And how her sketchbooks are used in her process.

In all my self investigation this summer a conversation that my friend Mario and I had about our process has come up in my mind again and again.

I have thought a lot about my process and how it has changed over the years. Things I have learned and as a result of trying things I have either adopted new steps or clung harder to my tried and true processes.

Mario and I are going to return to this conversation and share how our processes have changed. We specifically talked about how Mario would start a notion project and how I was doing it. It actually was interesting and made me realize I start lots of things in a similar manner.
