  • Having Splintered & Divided Focus: A Rapid Recharge
    Maybe you are like me and have lots of interests and you feel like your time is splintered and your focus is divided.
    Maybe you like it this way. But parts aren't working for you. These are some of the issues I am wrestling with.
    Being splintered, having multiple interests and having your focus is divided creates tension from what I am hearing from most of the people I follow, books I have read, and even things I have said. Honestly for the most part I agree we can't walk one step in multiple directions and get very far fast. But maybe there is another way.

    This week I am interviewing my friend Chris Martin. During the last series "Where Are They Now" series, I asked a lot of questions about pivotal moments in people's businesses, decisions they had made, and things they struggled with.
    One thing I learned was everyone struggles with something. We go through peaks and valleys in regards to our creativity and production. There are times we battle with overload and there are droughts. These droughts can be inspiration, motivation, lack of projects, etc. Everyone battles this.

    This week we end the Where Are They Now series with my good friend Dustin Lee. I met Dustin in 2015 at Creative South. I signed up for his workshop thinking it might not be that crowded. Boy was I wrong. We were pilled in there and I was sitting on the floor. He and I talked afterwards and it was like I met a brother from another mother. After all the years and so many conferences and conversations over zoom and the phone, he is one of my best friends.

    I have known Scotty for over seven years. In that time I have seen him flourish as a designer and illustrator and lettering artist AND as a speaker, coach, and teacher. Scotty is a coach, artist, designer, podcaster, speaker, dad to three and husband.

    Jason Craig has been someone that people can relate to. He has fun with design, is an amazing illustrator and designer but can also loosen up and not take things so serious. In this episode we will look at how and what he has been doing since going on his own. I believe he has been on his own for 4 years now.
    If you aren't familiar with Jason's work, get ready for some eye candy. He works across multiple disciplines within our industry and does them VERY WELL, from brands and murals to posters and packaging, and so much more. He creates a graphic style, believes in giving back and giving back and giving back. Seriously inspiring.
    He has done a lot of work in the time he has been on his own. He has tried new things, working part time for one client half of his work week to then going full time on his own. He enjoys cruises and has been on many since we last spoke and your adventures have been endless. I am excited to see what he has learned and what advice he would give his younger self.

    We continue with our Where Are They Now series with my friend and frequent guest, Jason Carne. I first met Jason back in 2013. I can't believe it has been ten years!!!
    If you aren't familiar with Jason's work it is AMAZING. He takes vintage lettering to another level. He has worked on movie props, brands, signage, packaging, and so much more. I am also always amazed because he does this by hand.
    He has a love for antiques and seems to be able to draw out the stories that are hidden in these old pieces of ephemera. He has multiple streams of income and has gone through a lot over the years. I am excited to catch up and see what wisdom he has to share.
    He is also a type designer and has created many typefaces. THEY ARE INCREDIBLE TOO!!!
    Jason has had made lots of letters since we last spoke in 2020.

    We continue with our Where Are They Now series this week with my friend Meena Khalili. I first met Meena when she was teaching graphic design and illustration at Virginia State University back in 2013.
    Meena has learned how to stand up for herself and has learned a lot about negotiations and sacrifice. She is a driven multi-faceted creative who is a mom and works with her spouse. Her story is inspiring and is full of experimentation. She is an artist who pivots, explores, and breaks out of boxes. Meena creates more than collage illustration which she is best known for, we will find out what she has been learning and researching.
