We are continuing with the Where are They Now series, this week with Alicja Colon. Alicja has to be one of the bravest people I know. She regularly takes on a variety of challenges with gusto, changing direction as she feels led. She is not afraid to dive into the deep end on a new audience, new medium, or new facet of the creative industry. Alicja is a creative trail blazer. She is an explorer and doesn't seem to be afraid to change course.

Alicja has redefined her view of success for herself and her business. Maybe this comes with experience but Alicja is going to bring some wisdom from life/business experience as a serial entrepreneur.

From photographer to project manager, to designer and paper craft illustrator, back to photography but with a new focus. Now she celebrates the beauty of women at all ages and women who are going through challenges.

I love Alicja's willingness to redefine herself and how she views success. Oh and another year in the books for the Creatives Ignite show! We are 11 this week.

Bethany has to be one of the people who has taught me the most. I learned about the using the Library of Congress images from her and about how the type rules we are taught in school are like guardrails when you are learning typography. But as we go further in our career we need to learn more and push outside of the safety bounds and explore.

Bethany is an excellent leader for the exploration and research of typography. How people have used it to play, to communicate better, and to push boundaries. I think about things she has taught me daily. I am super happy to welcome back Bethany! Heck Yeah!

Our guest this week is my good friend Dimi Lazarou. He is always pioneering new techniques and new technologies. He has been using AI (Artificial Intelligence) for years. He started making images before anyone else I knew was doing it. He has also figured out ways to use text and visual based AI to get the results he desires.

This might scare you. As I write this there is a writers strike happening in America in the entertainment industry. Some of the writer's demands have to do with AI and how it is used in the industry.

There are a lot of ways AI will be useful to us. There are some jobs that AI will render obsolete. As we continue to advance do you find yourself embracing new technologies or resisting?

We are continuing with the Where are They Now series. There is no doubt my guest this week was top on my list. Amarilys Henderson is probably my favorite Skillshare teacher. She is an author, an illustrator, an artist who sells her items in her shop on her site, but also licenses her work, she has a community, and has teaches classes on her own platform. She has had some big shifts in her teaching and her art licensing that we'll talk about.

Amarilys is inspiring to me for many reasons, here are five:

1. Her faith is at the center of her work.

2. She is always trying something new.

3. She has multiple income streams.

4. She doesn't give up. She is exploring and experimenting.

5. She shares what she knows, freely and is super easy to talk to and relate to.

Jody Collins is a community builder, designer, and believes in mentoring. I met Jody at an AIGA leadership retreat quite a few years ago. He is funny, engaging, passionate, and talented. Jody is a natural great leader, because he is always lifting others, and checking on them to make sure everyone is on the path.

Jody is also a talented illustrator and podcaster. He is interested in many things including printmaking. Our conversation will dive into the mentors who made a difference in his life and why he is so passionate about helping others.

This week I want you to reach out to someone you don’t know and tell them how their work / life has inspired you.

Some ideas you can do are:

Create a social media post and tag them (and us) telling them how they have inspired or helped you.

Reach out to a mentor or teacher (recent or past teacher) and let them know how much they have meant to you.

There are so many benefits of having a regular creative practice. Starting your own challenge, celebrating during a specific month, or even joining in with others during something like inktober aids you in getting better.

This week we talk to my friend Dameon Williams. He is an illustrator, UX designer who is someone I look up to. His creative learning practice is something I have been trying to emulate. Dameon makes learning and mastering a new technique or tool look easy. But he has been practicing learning and developing his flexibility with illustration and illustration tools for years.

He has tackled the ABC's of February challenge for the past few years. Dameon has come up with unique ways to highlight Black History month by featuring historical figures, inventions, and cultural influences in his daily illustrations and informative posts.

This is the perfect time to do this episode as this month we are lifting people, encouraging others, and this week is focused on you.

Week 3 is RECHARGE

Maybe you are like me and I am so far down on my to-do list I never prioritize myself and sometimes even my own business. This week I am hoping you will commit some time to do some self-care and restorative work on you and giving you what you need this week. Shoot a picture and use the hashtag #loveondesigners this week and let us know how you are taking care of yourself this week.
