We all want to love God; love Jesus our Lord and Savior. But if we’re honest we struggle with loving God the way He deserves. So we have a constant desire to grow in our love for God. But how do you grow in your love for someone? We must know someone before we can love them. The more we know God the more we are going to love Him. The more we know Christ the more we are going to love Him. Paul expressed this thought in his letter to the Philippians.

"But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.” Phil 3:7-11 (ESV).

Where does this love for God lead us? When we become all consumed with the love of Christ and want nothing more than relationship with God we discover an insatiable longing to be in heaven with God for all eternity.

Do you watch or listen to the news? Have you heard any troubling news in the last few months? I guess you could say we’ve had some troubling news for the past several years. There are many sinful bad things happening all the time. Terrible and horrific news comes to us daily about things happening all around us. You’ve probably heard about gruesome murders, deception, theft, disease, wars, and rumors of wars. How can we cope with all this depressing and overwhelming news? How can we as Christians stay positive and remain faithful to our calling. Consider the words of the 46th Psalm.

"Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” Psalm 46:8-11 (ESV).

How can we deal with all this craziness? How should we respond in faith to the extreme sin all around us? Let’s study God’s Word together this Sunday and learn how to be still and know that God is God.

If you knew someone was planning on breaking into your neighbors home to murder them would you stay silent in fear that they might not believe you? Maybe they would say that’s ridiculous and your relationship with them would be ruined. Spiritually speaking our neighbors who haven’t obeyed the Gospel are condemned by God. Their eternal lives are lost. God has called us to share the good news of salvation from sin in Jesus Christ. We should never let the fear of hurt feelings, busyness, or rejection keep us from sharing our faith with our neighbors. There’s a sense of urgency with sharing God’s love; Sharing the Gospel. We don’t know when Jesus will return and we don’t know when we will die. So we must be driven by a sense of urgency. Jesus taught His followers:

"Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants!” Luke 12:35-38 ESV

It’s time for us to wake up and see the urgency of God’s love for those around us who don’t have relationship with God through Christ.

We’re in a sermon series about fulfilling the greatest commandment. Jesus calls us to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. This is our greatest goal in life. Jesus taught the second greatest commandment is like the first; love your neighbor as yourself. God wants us to completely love Him every day and in every way, but we are also called to love the people around us every day and in every way that we can. When the church began in the first century how did Christians live their lives?

“So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:46-47 (NKJV).

How can we be more like Jesus and love our neighbor every day and in every way? Let’s come together this Sunday to worship our God and study His Word.

Second, Jesus taught us to love people around us as we love ourselves. What’s the greatest way we can love our neighbors? We can share the Gospel with them. When it comes to sharing the Gospel is there a way to be biblically obedient and culturally relevant at the same time? Yes. Let’s consider how Jesus sent out the 72 in Luke chapter 10.

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.” Luke 10:1-3 (ESV).

There are three things we see that happened when Jesus sent out the 72. Let’s come together this Sunday and study God’s Word on how to love our neighbors and share the Gospel.

Last week we talked about the greatest command where Jesus said; Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Jesus went on to say; the second is like it, love your neighbor as yourself. This Sunday we will look at the second greatest command, to love your neighbor as yourself. But have you ever asked yourself; Who’s my neighbor? Someone asked Jesus this very question in Luke chapter 10.

“And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Luke 10:25-29 (ESV).

Let’s come together this Sunday morning worshiping our God and studying what the scripture say about who our neighbor is and how we are called to love them.

We’re beginning a new series this Sunday on loving our neighbors. The series is based on Jesus answer to the question; “Which is the greatest commandment in the law?”

“And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets." Matt 22:37-40 (ESV).

What does Jesus mean when he says we should love our neighbor as ourselves? Who exactly is our neighbor? Let’s come together this Sunday morning and get into God’s Word and discover the heart of living the greatest commandment in our lives; loving our neighbor.

We’re finishing up our series on Poison Control this Sunday. This last lesson will focus on us battling the powerless moments of our lives. We all have many outside forces pressing in on us to give them what they want; a boss, a spouse, our kids, a neighbor, the government. We all experience those times of feeling helpless and overwhelmed with life. How can we deal with these pressures and live the Christian life we want to live and that God has called us to. Paul taught Timothy some important truths about His life in Christ.

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Tim 1:5-7 (ESV).

May we all embrace the spirit of power, love, and self-control that God has given us in Christ. Let’s unite together this Sunday and learn what it means to fan into flame the gift of God that is in us.

We’re starting our series again on Poison Control this Sunday. This lesson we will focus on the addictive nature of our flesh. Are you an addict? We see this question and immediately think of an alcoholic or someone struggling with a drug addiction. But let me ask you this; Are you addicted to TV? You might say; No. I don’t have to watch tv, I can stop any time if I want. Really? A day would probably be easy enough, but how about a week with no TV. How do you feel about that idea? The truth is that we all have things in our lives that we love and enjoy. The million dollar question is are they healthy, good things or not? Paul uses the idea of slavery talking about us and our commitments in life.

“Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.” Romans 6:16-18 (ESV).

Don’t worry, this lesson isn’t a call to give up TV, but a focus on living the lives of slavery we’ve been called to in Christ Jesus. We have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God’s righteousness. May God bless us as we live for Him.
