Creepalachia

Few people remember when a massive tire fire burned in Nitro, West Virginia, filling the air with thick black smoke and raising serious concerns about health, safety, and the environment. This video revisits what happened, why it was allowed to smolder for so long, and how the incident quietly faded from public memory.

This effort keeps blessing me with some of the most inspiring and powerful stories I’ve ever heard. As you know, we talk about addiction all the time, but we also talk to the people who are living in the solution.

Logan Terry started drinking at 13, slipped into opioids, and eventually into heroin. I asked him, “Have you ever been narcanned?” and he said, “Yeah, a few times. But the actual medicine is naloxone — Narcan is just the brand.” 🤯 I learn something new every day.

That’s how open and honest this conversation is. And here’s the best part: Logan got into recovery, fought his way out of the dark, and now works with the incredible organization Hope in the Hills — the same folks behind the Healing Appalachia event. https://www.healingappalachia.org/

This story is raw, real, and easily one of the most inspiring journeys I’ve ever sat across from. If you’re looking for hope, tune in.

I was so moved that Creepalachia is officially becoming a sponsor for next year’s Healing Appalachia event with a $1000 donation.

Did you know Edgar Allan Poe once suggested that the United States be renamed Appalachia? While we may not agree with all his ideas (and potential future crimes), that one hits home. Amber Koch joins us in the studio to break down Poe’s influence, his bizarre life, and how she’s channeling his spirit into her upcoming poetry collection Appalachian Gothic.

Amber’s book reimagines Poe in haunting, poetic tales rooted in West Virginia’s backwoods and history. She even treats us to a live reading of an original piece that will absolutely give you chills. Don’t miss this beautifully strange journey, releasing December 5.

Jeffrey Crawford vanished under circumstances that left his family and community desperate for answers, with more questions than facts to hold onto.

EDITOR'S NOTES: The former Mason County officer mentioned during this episode has reached out to deny making the claim that he felt threatened from any officer. "I dont exactly know how things got spun the way they did but I was never threatened by any police officer of the mason county sheriff's dept or the wv state police nor did investigate tonda or ashleys murder. I wasnt there long enough to do so I only worked there for two months. I quit simply because I didnt like the job." We strive to relay the correct information, and the alleged comment was added to the episode from a reliable source. If anyone has rebuttals to our work, please email us at [email protected]. We also work to contact individuals referred to in our episodes for comment before they air. Sometimes we are unsuccessful in getting a response, and/or finding contact information.

Appalachia’s storylines stretch far beyond the hills—and sometimes, all the way to the White House. In this jaw-dropping Thanksgiving special, Loretta Liegel shares her powerful journey from incarceration to a Presidential pardon by Bill Clinton. It’s a raw and redemptive ride through faith, federal trials, and finding your voice—plus, she read my palm (not in this episode) and somehow nailed it.
