What do 30+ horror and true crime books, a haunted house, a ghost train, and a juvenile detention sentence have in common?
Brian Bowyer.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Brian in the studio—and let me tell you, this man is one of the most captivating storytellers I’ve ever met. From a rocky past that included three years in the system as a teenager and battling severe alcohol addiction, Brian transformed his life through words.
In this two-hour October-perfect episode, we cover:
-His early days in juvie and how he discovered his love for reading
-The addiction that nearly took him under
-The decades-long writing journey that has earned him critical acclaim
AND the true ghost stories that followed him home
This ain’t just an October horror episode—its redemption wrapped in Appalachian weirdness.
🎙️ Tune in October 14th for one of our most unforgettable interviews: raw, real, eerie, and inspiring

I knew talking rafting in the New River Gorge would be fun—but I didn’t expect it to be this good.
This episode took a deeper dive than I imagined. Rafting legends and river experts Melanie Seiler Hames, Charles Seay, and Ray Ray Fillpot joined me in the studio to talk about the early days of rafting in southern West Virginia—and everything the river has taught them since.
We covered the laughs, the risks, the magic, and the madness. We talked river culture, guiding techniques, permits, wages, wild tourist moments, and what it’s really like to make a living on whitewater. There’s a reason folks say the river doesn’t lie. And to respect that, we pulled no punches in this one.
It’s part oral history, part comedy show, and part river sermon.

This one hits close to home. One of the most personal episodes I’ve ever done—and also one of the most honest.
Social workers Ashton Pritt and Miranda Morgan joined me in the studio for a raw, real, and at times hilarious conversation about the layered realities of parenting, trauma, drugs, life lessons, and what it means to hold space for others when your own life’s been anything but easy.
It’s not always pretty. It’s not always tied up with a bow. But it’s the kind of discussion that makes you reflect, rethink, and maybe even get a little uncomfortable—and that’s okay.
We need more of these conversations. And I’m grateful we got to have one on the record.

Editors note: the population of Kanawha County is over 173,000. The population of Charleston is over 46,000.
The kind of conversation I wish never had to happen. But I’m deeply honored to have sat across from James Harper’s family—his father, Chris Waddell, and his wife, Gabrielle Harper—and heard their hearts.
James was killed by a truck driver in April 2025 in West Virginia. You might’ve seen the headline. You might’ve recognized his face. But for his family, that pain didn’t stop when the news cycle moved on. They’ve been living the nightmare every day since.
This episode isn’t just about the tragedy. It’s about what comes next—what justice should look like, what safety reforms must be made, and how the memory of James Dean Harper will not be forgotten.
Chris and Gabrielle are fighting for change in West Virginia: stronger laws, better DOH safety protocols, mandatory death/injury notification reform, and true accountability for those responsible.
This conversation is raw. It’s real. It’s necessary. Because James deserved better. And so does every road worker risking their life to keep our highways safe.
Let’s fight for accountability. Let’s remember James.
Justice for James Harper isn’t just a hashtag—it’s a movement his family is leading. Let’s help them. #JusticeForJamesHarper

The Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster is a scar that will never fully heal in the heart of West Virginia. On that devastating day in 2010, twenty-nine coal miners were taken far too soon, and two others were left injured—physically and emotionally—for the rest of their lives.
Before Creepalachia ever began, I worked on a self-funded project called UBB: A Coal Miner’s Story. That five-hour documentary podcast taught me a lot—but most of all, it introduced me to people whose strength could only be forged by the fire of unimaginable loss.
One of those people is Kim Lane. Her husband, Richard Lane, was one of the miners killed in that explosion.
Kim came by the studio and graciously sat with me to tell her full story again. We talked about grief, accountability, healing, and the power of never letting silence become the final word. I’m humbled by her honesty and proud to share this episode with you.
We owe it to the memories of those 29 men to never stop talking about UBB, to hold truth to power, and to make sure tragedies like this never happen again.
🎙️ Watch the full interview with Kim Lane on October 6th, a conversation about love, loss, and the hard road of healing.

In this wild and absolutely packed October episode, mountain preacher, artist, and author Tony Breeden stopped by the studio for one of the most mind-melting deep dives into Appalachian cryptozoology I’ve ever had.
From Bigfoot to Booger Owls, Men in Black to Gray Barker, and the truth (or not) behind ancient aliens, we covered everything under the weird and wonderful Appalachian moon.
And that was just the first 17 minutes.
Tony’s storytelling, insight, and knowledge on everything from the Flatwoods Monster to the connections between John Keel and local lore will leave you rethinking what you thought you knew about West Virginia's weirdness. If you like your October strange, sweaty, and steeped in mystery—grab a pumpkin beer and hit play.
You’ll definitely want to take notes.

In this episode, we talked about our latest addition to the Haunted and Urbex series on YouTube, where Adra Johnson, Copperhead, and I spent the night inside one of the most famously haunted places in America: the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.
This special 90-minute conversation dropped the day after the main Urbex episode (October 2nd), and it was packed with first-hand accounts, eerie moments, and all the ghostly weirdness you could want to welcome spooky season.
Whether you're into paranormal investigations, haunted history, or just curious what it's like to roam the halls of a 19th-century asylum in total darkness—this one delivered.
🎥 The overnight Urbex special dropped October 1st on YouTube.
🎙 This deep-dive conversation followed on October 2nd, covering what really happened when the cameras weren’t rolling.

On November 25th, 2018, Wes Blackburn walked out of his mother’s home in West Virginia—and never returned. Joann Blackburn-Plumley and Michael Blackburn stop by the studio to
That weekend, he was supposed to be in Tennessee to watch his son race. But by the next day, whispers were already circling about an abandoned mine near the Oceana area. His mother got the call while at work: Wes was missing. She grabbed her other son and rushed straight to that mine herself.
Wes was 38. Brown hair. Green eyes. 5’7”. 145 pounds. Last seen in Oceana, WV.
Yes, Wes struggled with addiction—just like so many in our region. But that’s never the full story. He was a father. A brother. A son. And above all else, he was loved.
His mother has spent years chasing every lead. Rumors of a setup. A debt. A cover-up. Grainy footage. Cold tips. Dead ends. But not a day has gone by where she’s stopped searching for her boy.
Someone out there knows something. And that someone might be you—or someone you know.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest or conviction, and the exact location of Wes Blackburn. You can remain anonymous.
If you know something, speak now. It’s not too late.
📞 Call his mother: 304-923-1174

We’ll have Wes’s mother on the show soon. Please stay tuned and help us bring Wes home.

What an emotional interview this was, and I’m so appreciative of Jessica Basham for sharing her story involving cancer and the devastating ways it’s affected her life.
Though Jessica hasn’t personally battled cancer, it has changed her world forever. In this heartfelt conversation, she opens up about losing her daughter Schuylar to cancer—and how she continues to keep her memory alive through testimony and action. Jessica founded a Mom’s retreat "Broken to Beautiful" to support other women who have lost a child, and through that mission, she’s turning pain into purpose.
She also shares about the loss of her biological mother to cancer. But make no mistake—Jessica isn’t letting cancer take her spirit. Her strength and vulnerability in this conversation are powerful reminders of resilience, love, and remembrance.

In this powerhouse episode, boxing legend Christy “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” Martin joins J.D. for a raw and inspiring sit-down that spans her iconic career and extraordinary resilience.
From her roots in Itmann, West Virginia, to becoming the first—and still only—female boxer to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, Christy opens up about her early days, her historic 49-7-3 record with 32 knockouts, and what it was like to fight on Tyson undercards during the golden era of Pay-Per-View.
We also get into her recent collaboration with actress Sydney Sweeney on the upcoming biopic Christy, and how surviving a brutal domestic violence attack in 2010 forever changed her life—and her mission.
Christy was stabbed, shot three inches from her heart… and then fought two more times. That’s the kind of warrior we’re talking about. Now, she’s committed to helping one person every day. This episode is about strength, survival, and using your platform to make change.
