Creepalachia

In this powerful and brutally honest conversation, J.D. is joined by three fierce advocates who have spent their lives on the frontlines of West Virginia’s child welfare system. Together, they pull no punches when it comes to the state of CPS, foster care, mental health, addiction, and the layers of broken systems affecting kids across the Mountain State.

Mackenzie Holdren is a Guardian ad Litem representing over 100 children in abuse and neglect cases across Central WV.

Dr. Kristi Dumas brings 25+ years of experience in psychology, specializing in trauma and forensic mental health.

Kellie Gunnoe, Executive Director of Raleigh County United for Prevention, shares her story of growing up in the foster care system and now leading change through family empowerment and community resilience.

We talk systemic failures, trauma cycles, underfunding, and why the next generation depends on us telling these truths.

If you care about the future of kids in Appalachia, don’t miss this one.

If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected in WV, call 1-800-352-6513. You might be their only voice.

J.D. sits down with Kimberly Burks, the mother of Quantez Burks, and Latasha Williams, Quantez’s fiancée, to discuss the disturbing events surrounding his death in the custody of Southern Regional Jail in West Virginia.

In one of the most powerful and emotional episodes ever recorded for Creepalachia, these two women explain how Quantez was brutally beaten to death by correctional officers only one day after being booked. His injuries were so severe that an independent autopsy revealed broken ribs, blunt force trauma, and widespread contusions. Had it not been for Kimberly’s and Latasha’s relentless pursuit of truth, the state may have swept it all under the rug.

Now, some of the officers involved have been sentenced to prison, and their fight is far from over. This is a story of grief, justice, cover-ups, and courage, told by the people who loved Quantez most.

🕊️ This episode is a testament to Appalachian resilience in the face of systemic corruption. Don’t miss it.

In this episode of Creepalachia, I sit down with Morgan Morrison, co-owner of Rock City Cake Company in Charleston, West Virginia. What started as a conversation about cake and creativity quickly turned into one of the eeriest tales we’ve ever shared.

Their shop isn’t just a bakery — it’s located on the very site of the 1949 Woolworth Fire, where seven Charleston firefighters lost their lives. That history hasn’t stayed quiet. Morgan and the staff believe their bakery is haunted by a ghost they’ve named Harry, and she shares the unexplained happenings, weird vibes, and brushes with the paranormal they’ve experienced over the years. WITH EVIDENCE.

If you're into ghost stories, Appalachian history, or just want to hear about a bada** haunted bakery serving rock-and-roll sweets with a side of spooky, you’re gonna love this one.

In this episode, J.D. sits down with Austin Hatfield, a former rabbit farmer from Beckley, West Virginia, who traded farm chores for barbells—and made it all the way to the CrossFit Games.

Austin opens up about how rural life and responsibility shaped him long before competition ever did. From loading hay bales to carb loading up for the Open, his story is Appalachia at its grittiest and most inspiring. Today, he’s ranked among the top 5 CrossFit athletes in the world, and he’s just getting started.

In one of the most emotional episodes yet, J.D. sits down with Charles Stewart, a former Army combat medic who spent 12 years in Iraq. But this isn’t just a story about war—it’s a raw and unflinching conversation about what happens after the battlefield.

Charles opens up about losing friends in combat, the trauma of being both healer and survivor, and how he ended up homeless for two years battling alcoholism. He talks about the moments that broke him and the ones that started to heal him. This episode is about grief, guilt, survival—and the long road back to self-worth.

This week on Creepalachia, I’m joined by S. D. Smith—also known as Sam Smith—author of The Green Ember saga, Jack Zulu and the Waylander’s Key, Mooses with Bazookas, and more. We talk through how he started one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns to come out of West Virginia.

We dig into the heart of what makes a story matter: his journey as a storyteller rooted in rural West Virginia, how his imaginative worlds serve the soul, and how family, faith, and play intersect with his writing.

Sam brings the kind of warmth and wisdom you rarely hear—about why fantasy matters, how to build moral imagination in children, and why Appalachia shapes the kind of stories we need right now.

In this wild, musical, and deeply Appalachian episode, musician Jonah Carden joins J.D. to perform original songs and tell the stories behind them—stories soaked in grit, heartbreak, and a little bit of beer-soaked chaos.

Jonah shares what it’s really like to play in bars across Appalachia, including some of the craziest moments on stage, how music has helped him process the hard stuff, and that one unforgettable night he played with Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains.
