St Francis of Assisi is credited with saying, "Preach the gospel every day, when necessary, use words."

On the night before his death Jesus preached a sermon with no words when He grabbed a bucket, tied His coat around His waist and started scrubbing feet.

Even on the cross, He used words sparingly and let his suffering and death speak volumes.

This weekend at CrossWalk Church, we are continuing our message series entitled "God's Calling For My Life". This week we will see the witness that we can make by the work that we do.

We're going to be looking at 1 Thessalonians, chapter 4, and see how our works done in love open doors and minds and hearts so that we can share words of love and hope in Jesus.

What type of work do you find meaningful?

Perhaps you're good with your hands, you build or fix things easily. Or maybe computers or IT are more your jam. Are you artistic and enjoy creating or designing? Maybe you prefer to work with people.

The fact is we aren't going to find all types of work meaningful. And that's OK.

But what about when it feels like most or all of the work you do (or even your whole life) is meaningless and joyless? Ever been there?

This weekend at CrossWalk Church in Phoenix, we starting a new message series entitled "God's Calling For My Life". We will take a look at the work God calls us to do in our lives. For our message this week we are going back to the beginning. We will look at Genesis 2 and consider both God's work and ours.

Two of God's most impressive works of art are creation and salvation. And we will see how he uses both of these masterpieces to bring joy and meaning to the work that we do.

Getting to church this Sunday might seem like work, but by the time you leave, our goal is that you will see that it is a privilege.

Like it or not, we are all creatures of habit. Some of those habits are good and others are bad.

So what are your bad habits? It can be anything from overeating to a lack of exercise. It could be too much social media or too little time spent with your spouse and children.

But habits aren't all bad. Maybe you want to improve your life by starting a new habit. Here is a list from which you can pick: eat breakfast, practice gratitude, daily exercise, get a good night's sleep, be mindful, read something every day, wash hands regularly, drink more water.

This weekend at CrossWalk Church in Phoenix we are ending our "Stand Out" message series in Daniel 6 with the account of Daniel in the Lion's den.

Perhaps a better title for Daniel 6 would be "the triumph of habits and character." Daniel's greatest strengths - his habit of spending time with God in devotion and prayer and his character of being honest and diligent at work - seemed to be his Achilles' heel. His enemies were using it against him.

But Daniel's habits and character where a reflection of his relationship with God which was his ultimate source of strength and power.

What do the American Colonists, the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team, and the New York Giants in the 2008 Super Bowl have in common? They were major underdogs who won against all odds!

This weekend at CrossWalk Church, we're continuing our message series called "Stand Out." This week we are going through Daniel chapter 4, and what is shocking is to see the world super power Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar admitting that he was no longer top dog. He praised the true God!

Why the change? He got a dose of humble pie from God, which was actually an act of God's mercy, and he was willing to share his story with his entire kingdom!

However even before that, he had seen day after day the humble example of Daniel, who humbly loved his enemies and humbly served God. This made Daniel stand out in a dog eat dog world. Daniel learned that humble love and humble service even to our enemies can bring about the change in our world we want to see.

As we humbly love those who don't love us and as we humbly serve those who would love to walk all over us, we give our world a glimpse of Jesus, who conquered sin, death and the devil by humbling himself on the cross. Humble love changes people.

See the difference that humility makes as we humbly love others as Jesus first loved us.

We have all been in hopeless situations.

It could be something as simple as watching your favorite sports team losing badly in a game, so you turn it off at halftime. You lose hope.

Or maybe it is the diet that you have been religiously following. You hop on the scale a week later to find out that you actually gained a pound. You lose hope and binge on salty and savory foods.

And maybe you even lose hope that God is going to help you. You struggle with an issue or relationship or situation for so long, it just seems like God is never going to come to your aid.

All of us know what it is like to lose hope in some facet of our lives.

This weekend at CrossWalk Church we're continuing our message series called "Stand Out." This week we are going through chapter three of the book of Daniel.

Three friends of Daniel were in a hopeless situation. They refused to fall down and worship a statue the king set up and they faced the death penalty as a result.

They knew God was strong enough to help them, but they weren't sure how exactly he would help.In our message we will see that God joins us in our suffering and will eventually free us from the suffering. And for that reason we always have hope, no matter what we are facing.

Find the difference that hope can make in your hopeless situations.

- Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge in a helpful way.

- Tact is the ability to convey wisdom to another person in a useable way.

So where do you go for wisdom and tact?

Some go to institutions of higher learning. They try to glean words of wisdom from experts on different subject matter. Others go to a recognized source, like the Dalai Lama, looking for some type of spiritual encounter on the path of enlightenment. Still others look to themselves. They believe that trial and error is the way to wisdom. They are bound and determined to blaze a path of wisdom on their own.

How about you? Where do you go to learn wisdom and tact?

This weekend at CrossWalk Church, we are continuing our message series called "Stand Out", where we're going through parts of the book of Daniel. The "wisemen" of Daniel's day were stumped when looking for wisdom. They said, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! . . . No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among humans.”

The good news is that God does reveal his wisdom to us. Jesus came to reveal the mysteries and wisdom of heaven. He teaches and freely gives words of wisdom and life. We have a collection of this wisdom in the Bible.

Our country is drifting farther and farther away from God.

In 1973, 91% of Americans professed to be Christian.

In 2015, 75% of Americans professed to be Christian.

In 2022, 63% of Americans professed to be Christian.

It is easy to see that people are walking away from God and his Church. How about you? Are you affected by this change in the religious climate?

This weekend at CrossWalk Church, we are beginning a new message series called "Stand Out." We will go through parts of the book of Daniel and see that God influenced Daniel and that Daniel influenced the world in which he lived.

When you think of Influencers today, do you think of high-profile athletes, entertainment leaders and fashion icons who hold sway over a target audience? Their tools are Instagram and Snapchat and other social media platforms. But God's influence is so much deeper than that.

It started with the greatest influencer of all times, Jesus Christ. His cross is still the ultimate symbol of self-less love and his open tomb the symbol of God's unrivaled power.

Even in a world that doesn't acknowledge him, he continues to control circumstances in our world and in our lives that bring us closer to him and make us stand out.

Are you a person who enjoys watching a campfire? It's a favorite activity of Pastor Chris and his family when they're back in WI during family vacation. Just about every night they gather around the fire to enjoy conversation with one another.

Every once in a while however, someone decides that it's taking too long to get the fire started so they pour gas or lighter fluid on to the wood. When that happens, the conversation stops. Why? Because the fire flares up and gets huge!

This weekend at CrossWalk Church in Phoenix as we conclude our "Directed" message series God directs us not to throw fuel on the fire in our spiritual conversations. What does that mean?

Let's be honest, sometimes matters of religion and faith can get a little heated. When we believe strongly about Jesus and someone else believes strongly about something else, it can get a little heated. In those situations, do we try to force the conversation further? Maybe, but sometimes it may be like throwing fuel on the fire and all it does is stops the conversation.

How does God want us to handle these types of spiritual conversations? In our message we are going to learn how to handle spiritual conversations in a way that is helpful and not harmful.
