ABOUT GIULIO:

I really don't have the words to describe how prolific and exceptional Guilio's work is. New personal projects seem to appear online every couple of weeks and I just don't know how he does it.

 

Giulio spent a good few years at the beginning of his career at Bertone and has the bragging rights to the Jaguar B99 concept as well as the Alfa Pandion.

 

These concepts are so different, yet unmistakably Bertone. They are both more than a decade old and still hold up solidly today. It needs also to be noted that both of these projects were completed in his early twenties.

 

Giulio's skills have taken him from Jaguar to Ferrari and everywhere in between.

 

There is so much going on in his head and he has the ability to manifest these ideas to a level that most only dream of.

 

I urge every young designer, regardless of discipline, to pay attention this!

ABOUT MARK:

This guy looks mean, but he is one of the friendliest people I have met!

 

Mark and his partner, Ian Wride, started their motorcycle design company, Xenophya, out of a shed at Northumbria University and a 1500 pound grant.

 

There was no grand plan, other than that neither of them was ready to give up student life and face the world of employment.

 

Xenophya evolved into an unorthodox madhouse that developed a stellar reputation in motorcycle design and for over a decade, created many successful products for brands such as Aprilia, Royal Enfield, and Triumph.

 

Mark and Ian learnt everything by simply doing. This applied to design, modelling, fabrication, but also to their business. There was no blueprint or roadmap as neither had worked in other design studios.

 

Ultimately they did things that felt intuitively right and married this with a work ethic that would make most of us feel shameful. Like many small businesses, their word and reputation meant everything and this grew stronger with every project.

 

After a long and successful relationship with Royal Enfield, the company made them an offer to establish a Design Studio in the UK, which Mark and Ian now run.

ABOUT SYD:

Syd is a French Car Designer that currently resides in L.A. He has worked for Audi, Porsche, GM as well as Peugeot. Although still relatively young, Syd has been a prominent figure in the Car Design community for many years.

 

His skills and prolific output are simply mind-bending and the envy of many designers. He credits a lot of his success to working out in his early teens that he wanted to be a designer and jumping head-first into the world of sketching and 3d modelling through pure intrigue.

 

This guy has an insatiable appetite for experimentation, which has kept him ahead of the curve for most of his career. He can sketch, model, visualise and create in VR at a level that makes him one of the best all-rounded designers in the business.

 

Sydney is resourceful and knows how to get things done. He is an amazing problem solver and seems to find solutions to all the brick walls that design throws at him.

 

Growing up under the roof of a rally driver, Syd has long had a yearning to get out into the desert himself. He recently bought a modified 1600 Beetle, which was built for the Baja 1000, and started desert racing. Go and check out his Instagram for pics of this awesome machine!

ABOUT ART:

This Brazilian Heart-throb is a Creative Powerhouse and is every bit excited about design today as he was when he started out more than 20 years ago!

 

Art is currently a Creative Manager at the California-based EV start-up, Canoo. He has worked for GM, PSA (Citroen), VW as well as Faraday Future and has done both Interior and Exterior Design.

 

Art seems to effortlessly produce an ocean of awesomeness on command. He shared many of his secrets and processes, which, unfortunately, consist of hard work.

 

If you are here, it's probably because you are aware of Art and his work and you would be forgiven for thinking that he was born with a Wacom tablet in his hand and a gift from God. He talked extensively about his early frustrations and how hard to he had to work to raise his skill-level.

 

You will be hard-pushed to find anyone that will have a bad word to say about Art and that's simply because he is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I am officially dubbing him the 'Dave Grohl' of Car Design i.e. The nicest guy in our community.

 

I had to pull the plug on the conversation at 2 hours as I had a sick dog that needed to be taken out.

 

Those 120 minutes felt like 5, which is the best indicator of a quality conversation. Don't worry, we will do this again.

ABOUT MARTIN:

This man is one of the Car Design industry's biggest unsung heroes and nothing short of a legend.

 

Martin has designed award-winning cars, products and motorbikes. He also competed in the British Formula 3 Championship against many great race car drivers, including Nigel Mansell and the amazing Ayrton Senna.

 

The Scottish native could easily have embraced the comfort of corporate security. Instead, he passionately sought out challenge after challenge and had to prove himself in every new situation.

 

Martin has contributed an insane amount to the industry and he did this from the shadows as a freelancer, a gun for hire, a hitman...whatever you want to call it. He has built a reputation for getting things done.

 

The first big project that put him as well as the UK-based design house, IAD, on the international design map, was a concept car called the Alien (used in the thumbnail for this episode). Martin went on to spend almost 4 decades (and counting) working independently for many different companies including AUDI, Ford, BMW and Aprilia Motorcycles.

 

He contributed an immeasurable amount to both the Iconic Z3 and the first-generation Audi TT. Unfortunately, he has never been credited for his contributions to either project. The story of the TT, in particular, has been one of the most callous acts of exploitation in the industry, even by large German OEM standards.

 

I did probe Martin on this during our conversation and, understandably, he refused to elaborate on the subject. It's been nothing short of torturous and after almost 30 years, he is happy to leave it in the past. At times there have been half-arsed attempts by very senior executives to make things 'right', but it's proved to be little more than lip service. I urge everyone to do their own research on the subject before accepting what has been fed to us.

 

It needs to be said that despite all this, Martin continued gracefully and with the kind of dignity that is devoid in much of our industry. It's been a very tough path, but he has retained his independence and is still fresh as fuck at the ripe old age of 63! He sketches daily and is a working designer.

 

I don't know if Martin will ever get the respect that he truly deserves, but every young person starting out should take a leaf out of his book!

ABOUT THE BRIDANS:

Nikita and Iliya Bridan are identical twins and the founders of Oilstainlab, one of the coolest Skunkworks operations in Los Angeles. Nikita and Iliya Bridan are identical twins and the founders of Oilstainlab, one of the coolest Skunkworks operations in Los Angeles. 

 

They have their fingers in so many different pies but are most well know for Porsche Half11 as well as the Dropped Alfa.

 

The Canadians dropped out of school at 15 to get started early on their Car Design education. Art Center in Pasadena would not accept them as they were too young. Their parents could see how serious the twins were about their ambition and so the family went to live in Italy where the twins enrolled at IED.

 

After some time in there, an image of Sasha Selipanov's thesis project popped up online. The twins were heavily inspired by this and decided to apply at Art Center again. They were now old enough and had developed enough and were successful in their application.

 

I have known about Nikita for over 10 years. I only found out recently that he has a clone, equally as gifted. He and Iliya joked that there is a 3rd brother locked in the basement that produces all the work. These guys operate on an insane level, have a twisted sense of humour and are super nice dudes.

 

I had always assumed that they must to A-holes, given how talented, good-looking, and successful they are. Of course, I was totally wrong!

ABOUT STEFAN:

He has founded multiple companies, put many young designers on the map and curated shows with design 'megastars' (Marc Newson, Ross Lovegrove, Philippe Starcke, Jasper Morrison).

 

Stefan was also the guy that approached IKEA in 90's and presented his case as to why they had to invest in a proper design department. He spent 5 years helping them establish a team and their PS line, which is still around today!

 

Stefan was the founder and CEO of POC (Sports helmets, apparel, sunglasses etc.), which was sold in 2015 for 65 million dollars. He said that this was the first time that he actually made any money throughout his career. Everything had always been passion-led and at times he found himself struggling to cover costs.

 

He continues to lead his latest venture, Cake (Electric Bikes), with all the same passion and this is evident in their products. They are the most well thought-out and designed electric bikes on the market and one of the most exciting start-ups in the mobility space.

ABOUT FELIX:

Felix is a very interesting man. He comes from the North East of England has been a Design Director, a startup Co-founder, artist and musician.

 

He started his career working for Mattel as a junior designer, but put that on hold for a few years to pursue music full time with his band, the Kustombuilt.

 

They had considerable success for a few years and they were destined for great things. The band was a staple on UK radio and they sold out venues across the country. They were, however, unable to secure a substantial record deal due to the bad timing of their emergence (early 2000's i.e. CD/MP3 crossover).

 

The band broke up and Felix rejoined Mattel in America and eventually became the head of Design for Hotwheels. He did many amazing things at the company and arguably saved the brand from its demise. Senior executives had been made to believe that interest in the toy icon had waned and they felt that it was no longer viable to carry on. Felix, along with a couple of colleagues, architected a strategy to reinvigorate public interest. They did this through a series of full-size vehicle builds and coupled this with world-record breaking stunts in front of monster crowds estimated to be in the region of 300k! Needless to say, it worked out pretty well.

 

It was through these events that Felix met his business partner-to-be, a former stunt-driver, turned movie director, Mouse McCoy. Together founded Hackrod, a Digital manufacturing company redefining the way vehicles are designed, through the use of AI/Machine Learning. This was a truly innovative venture at the time of its inception and their quest to 'democratise design' was also a great success.

 

Felix is also an accomplished Artist in his own right. He has fused his graffiti influences with the craft of traditional methods to realise his distinctive punchy style. He has also recently painted a Porsche 914 exterior with the official Urban Outlaw, Magnus Walker.

 

Felix has lived many versions of himself and that is what makes him so interesting. He has pursued all of his intrigues successfully. They are always successful because he knows what lessons to take from failures and recognises when it is time to move on.

 

I was truly inspired by him and I thoroughly enjoyed my time listening to his stories!

ABOUT PAWEL:

Paweł is the owner of Car-Bone liveries, a Porsche Custom Design and restoration company, which boasts the largest collection of decals, stickers, and plates in the world.

 

Paweł is a Graphic designer by trade and started Car-Bone by chance. He was looking for some technical decals for the engine bay of an old 911, but found out that no one made them.

 

He quickly designed his own, but there was a minimum order requirement of 500, due to the special foil used. Pawel listed the other 499 on Pelican Parts and they sold out instantly. This was how his business started.

 

Car-Bone has grown into an internationally respected Porsche specialist that currently has a waiting list of 2 years for a complete build. They also design and manufacture their own custom parts and can produce anything Porsche-related.

 

Paweł has produced Artwork and Graphics for multiple Petrolicious films in the past and still offers these services within his company.

 

I reached out to Pawel, because of what he has built in the most unlikely of areas. He doesn't live in sunny California. He didn't study at the RCA and his parents aren't oil tycoons.

 

Pawel is from Lodz, in Poland; it is hardly the Design or Porsche mecca of the world. Yet, through his passion for all things Porsche, he brought the demand to him.

 

He is the epitome of 'build it and they will come.'

 

Pawel is self-made in every sense and is a living example of how you make things happen when you don't live in the 'right' place.

I am a South African Designer, Digital Modeller and the host of Crown Unfiltered. I will be talking to a cross section of people that work in the Car Design Industry.

These will include designers, digital and clay modellers, vis artists and colour & material designers. The focus of our conversations will be centered around personal processes and experiences within the business. My aim is to demystify some of the preconceptions about this industry and give people an unadulterated glimpse into the business.

I also wish to give the younger generation the opportunity to see that the people that these professionals come in different shapes and sizes and some of them will be unknown. The intention is to see that you should always be yourself and not let your job define or change who you are.
