ABOUT MICHELE:

Michele Leonello is an Italian Car Designer based in Milan.

 

He is a Professor at the prestigious Scuola Politecnica di Design where he teaches and mentors the Masters Program. Michele is still actively working in Design for the international Transportation & Product Design Studio and consultancy, DO:IT, where currently holds the position of Global Head of Design. In addition to all the above, he runs a thriving Automotive Art business and has become renowned for his Jackson Pollock style way of painting.

 

Michele is a super busy man and skilled in so many areas. Anyone that has the opportunity to attend SPD can have solace in knowing that they will be taught by someone that is truly connected to the business and still possesses the sketching skills of a young enthusiastic designer. This guy is full of passion. He still loves what he does and has contributed immensely to Italian Car Design Culture.

 

We spoke biographically about growing up in his native Sardinia and being inspired by other natives, like Falvio Manzoni and the pleasures of living on a farm at a young age. Of course, the conversation evolved, and we transitioned to his journey into the business all the way though to present day. We ended the conversation on some parting advice for young people wanting to become designers. More than 2.5 hours of passion. Enjoy!!!

ABOUT KHRYSTYNE:

The Los Angeles native left sunny California for the snow-capped mountains of Munich more than 10 years ago after finishing her studies at Art Center in Pasadena.

 

She was employed at BMW by Anders Warming and soon moved over to MINI where she continued her role in Exterior Design

 

We spoke candidly about growing up in Los Angeles and spending holidays sanding parts at her father's business where he built show-cars for the film industry. We talked about her time at Art Center and her internship at Designworks and the pressures that came along with that. Khrystyne also opened up about the struggles she faced in developing her skills as a designer, but also how she carried herself as a person. Needless to say, she came out the other side with her integrity well intact and has enjoyed immense success as an Exterior Designer.

 

This was a beautifully honest and authentic discussion without any pretenses. Khrystyne honestly loves her job and the people she works with. She can not imagine working anywhere else and I have to say that I believe her. She was been at the company for over a decade with no signs of leaving. She knows what she has and believes that the grass is greener on the side that she is on!

ABOUT MAX:

Max Schneider has really only just started out in what will be a very bright career.

 

He has had some incredible internships, notably Mercedes Benz in Sindelfingen and Audi’s Advanced Design Center in Munich. Max has also been a finalist in multiple design competitions and won the Rimac Design Challenge.

 

Max is most definitely a petrol-head and likes to build things and see how they work. He is a former Polo Cup Race driver and also a competitive drone pilot. Not one to be pigeon-holed, he most certainly is dynamic in his thought process. He loves coming up with new Hypercar Concepts as much as anyone, but he also considers himself to be part of the new generation of designers that are constantly pushing the envelope with regards to Future Mobility. Evidence of this can be seen in his student project, Teemo, that he developed at Volkswagen’s Future Center in Potsdam.

 

While he had multiple options available to him in his native Germany, he opted for a move across the world in a completely alien environment that is Japan. He is entering his 3rd year as a professional designer and currently resides in Tokyo.

ABOUT SEBASTIAN:

Sebastian has got so many things going on in and around his day job as an Interior Designer at Ford.

 

He designs, molds and produces his own figurines. He runs a non-profit project producing Skateboard decks with his illustrations; the proceeds of which go to charity. Seb has also founded his own boutique rally through the Alps and is constantly working on, modding, pimping (with real tools!) his beloved G-Model Targa. He also has a thing for fashion (he worked as a sneaker designer for Adidas) and produces clothing. All of the above is generally done under the moniker “Asphalt Kultur”, his Instagram handle.

 

If that wasn’t enough, he is about to launch his own line of children’s toys (Cars obviously), called Good Wood. Get it???

 

Last, but not least, he is friends with Ivan Shmatov (Sell_Porsche_to_buy_Porsche) as well as Florian Weber and is part of ‘We are the Road Crew’, an art collective. Ivan talked about this in episode 19.

 

Sebastian is all about collaboration and helping out his fellow brothers and sisters. Anyone that knows him will tell you that he is by far one of the nicest people you will ever meet. You will pick that from this conversation.

Roger Atkins is a man of many talents, but he is most well-known for being a leading expert in the EV world.

I wanted to speak to someone that really knows what they are talking about when it comes to Electric Vehicles. I have spent 10 years in the Automotive business within design and it amazes me how misinformed people, including myself, are on the above subject. Lucky for all of us, I got the best!

ABOUT ALAN:

Alan Derosier is a French Exterior Designer currently living in Stuttgart. This is the second time that he has been on the podcast. He brought along his amazing model of the Porsche Vision 908/04 that he designed and developed with a group of friends. They published the project online and a year later Porsche reached out to Alan. Andy is a Digital Design (Alias) Modeller living in Munich. He studied Automotive Design at Swansea University and did his Postgraduate (M.A.) at Coventry University in the U.K. He's worked as a Product Designer as well and has shown a natural aptitude for Car Exteriors.

 

ABOUT THE EPISODE:

This turned out to be a bit of a messy show, but some interesting things were said.

I was intoxicated from exhaustion/lack of sleep/simply trying to do too much in too little time. My words were even more messy than usual and there were moments where I was giggling mess without really contributing to anything. I can only apologise.

It was tempting to cut these moments out and some of it we had to. I felt horrible about this episode and I almost never put it out. In the end, I felt obligated to publish it as the others really had their shit together and the only person that I embarrassed was myself.

Alan sat through 3 hours of traffic to get there and brought his beautiful model along, which could have damaged in transit. It goes without saying that it is totally irreplaceable. All of the work that had gone into getting things set up would have also been a total waste had we binned the show.

It needs to be said that both Andy and Alan had some productive and super interesting dialogue. It was also the first time that we have had a physical model on set and I doubt we will have another opportunity like this again. Upon viewing the episode with fresh eyes, it seems that actually, it was pretty entertaining and obviously the other provided a substantial amount of intellect, despite having to deal with an intoxicated host.

Salvador is a Visualisation Artist working in the Automotive Industry.

He started out as an Engineer in his native Barcelona where he muscled his way into the most interesting part of the business, Design. It was here that he transitioned into Alias modelling and decided to leave sunny Spain for the grey skies of England. He worked for a software reseller helping them with their training. It was here that him and I met one said training course more than 10 years ago. Salv has since moved on from the dark art of digital modelling and is now working for the Chinese startup, NIO in Visualisation.

This was the first time that him and I have seen each other since the training course. He is a mountain of knowledge and all the experience to with it. Salvador is also one of the nicest guys that I have ever met in the business. His smile, laughter and energy is infectious. I think you'll like him!
