ABOUT FABIO:

Fabio started out as an Industrial Designer and got his big break in the Car world at FCA.

 

Here, he established the building blocks of classic Italian proportions under the mentorship of the legendary Pietro Camardella (Ferrari F40, Ferrari Mythos, Ferrari 456 GT, etc).

 

These foundations proved to be invaluable many years later after a cold call from an Italian company looking for a designer to lead the development of their first bespoke Grand Tourer, The Puritalia Berlinetta.

 

Fabio is a Car Designer but has also designed many products. Since his move to New York City in 2013, he has been heavily involved in the drone business. In addition to this, he also manages to find time to teach at IED in Turin.

 

Last, but not least, he is a family man and a red wine enthusiast!

ABOUT JORDAN:

Most of you won't know who Jordan Taylor is, because he is secretly designing, coding and building alternative worlds for the metaverse.

 

The 25 year old studied Car Design at CCS in Detroit. After working at Honda for a little over a year, he decided to check out of the business and search for something that would satisfy an itch not being scratched designing cars.

 

He moved to San Francisco, got a job at Nvidia and carried on working on various AI projects. He met some dudes on the internet and together, they developed Vizcom, an AI sketching tool.

 

Many of us are concerned about our jobs being taken away by robots and Jordan helped me understand how AI will help us in ways that we can't perceive right now.

 

This was the first time that I got excited about the role that AI will play in the future and I also believe that Jordan is probably one of the most qualified people from our community to speak on this subject.

 

I have worked with 'experts' in the Future Mobility space and I have yet to speak with anyone that has displayed the kind of understanding and insight that this young man has.

 

Given that he spoke to me, everything was dumbed down to a level that we mortals can grasp!

ABOUT ROY:

The legendary Roy White is a clay modeller from the Essex Riviera in England.

 

He is a master craftsman and has spent over 25 years perfecting the art of sculpting cars out of clay. He was worked all over Europe and lead teams on a range of projects from trucks to hyper cars.

 

Roy has amassed an army fans over the last couple decades for his skill, but more importantly, his ability to entertain and brighten up every studio he spends time in.

 

We talked about how he fell into the business, his Art Deco obsession and his beloved Air Stream trailer that has been in the family since becoming a parent more than 20 years ago. Roy married his high school sweet-heart and they have been together for over 30 years.

 

This was the first time that we had met and he absolutely charmed the hell out of me and made me cry with laughter.

 

Roy's mantra in Car Design is simple:

ABOUT CESAR:

Cesar Pieri knows all about the struggle.

He worked many different jobs, before deciding to re-enter the world of education as a young father at the age of 30.

 

Cesar clawed his way into the tough world of Car Design and eventually made a name for himself at Jaguar, where he initiated and designed the Project 7 F-Type. I saw, first hand, how that project put him on the map and forced others to pay attention to him.

 

Cesar is also an exceptional artist. He's produced a collection of exquisite illustrations on vintage race car panels, bonnets as well as aeroplane wings.

 

He currently resides in Savannah, Georgia, where is the Chair of Industrial Design at S.C.A.D. Cesar is also the Creative Design Director at Innovatio Future Mobility and , as mentioned above, fulfilling a backlog of Art commissions.

 

Above all else, he is a father, husband and a super nice dude. An inspiring talk by an inspiring guy!

ABOUT HENRY:

Henry is an English Digital Design Modeller based in California.

 

Myself and Henry never crossed paths, however, we both studied at Coventry University (a year apart) and have multiple friends in common. We both worked at Jaguar and, again, missed each other by a couple of months. This was the first time that we had met (virtually, of course).

 

Henry learned Alias pretty early at university, which helped him enormously with future work opportunities, which include McLaren, Nissan/Infiniti/Jaguar and Hyundai, California.

ABOUT IAN:

Ian Cartabiano is the President and Director of Design for Toyota/Lexus Europe. The California native resides in the South of France where he runs the ED2 studio.

 

We talked extensively about growing up in a family of creatives, his move to the West Coast as a young child, and being intimidated by the skate and surf culture that he found himself in.

 

From Ian’s recollection of his youth, it seems that all the stars aligned for him with regards to being thrust in the direction of Car Design.

 

He was raised by creative parents. His father took a job transfer that landed the family a stone's throw away from the notorious Art Center in Pasadena. He also had a close relative that had an insatiable taste for Italian cars.

 

The only thing Ian had left to do is the hard bit…the work!

ABOUT JO:

Jo is a fascinating person. He is the Director of Mazda Design Europe and has spent most of his career working for the Japanese Automaker. He is, however, not your typical petrol head.

 

The Belgian’s creativity is deep-rooted in consumer product design and he studied Industrial Design in his home country. He is an avid collector of Dieter Rams products as well as obscure German ceramics. This probably explains the natural fit that he experienced as an Interior Designer.

 

Prior to the pandemic, Jo and his wife have held pop-up boutiques in the living rooms of friends. These curated events were an exercise in getting to know the local people in their adopted home of Frankfurt. It was also a creative lesson in scratching an itch outside the world of Car Design.

 

One of Jo’s other great past times includes hitting the road spontaneously with his wife in their Volkswagen T3 camper. We talked about all the above, including his time as a broke student making ends meet at the RCA as well as Japanese culture and how it influences Design.

 

Despite the potential conceited tone that I have set in this description, it needs to be said that Jo is incredibly grounded. He is also the embodiment of a well-rounded designer that seeks inspiration in the most unlikely of areas.

 

He is a gentleman with impeccable taste and a leader that commands respect in the quietest manner possible. There are lessons in his story that are invaluable and I feel that every student should soak up every word...

Paul Howse started his career at McLaren in 2009 and shortly afterward had his theme selected for the P1.

 

He enjoyed immense success at the British Supercar Manufacturer where he was the lead on a number of projects including P1, P1 GTR, 720S exterior and the 570S interior.

 

What was incredibly unique about Paul is his mountain of modesty. For someone that is so gifted and so accomplished, I found him to be one of the most grounded people I have ever met. He has a wonderful attitude to life and a beautiful demeanor. I wish we lived in the same place – he would be my new best friend.

 

Paul is a lesson in character. He is honest, modest, and an absolute weapon in his creative pursuits. He is everything that a young person should aspire to be...
