On this episode of Crusaders Pregame, hosts Zach Marks and Dawson Petryshen look back on the weekend struggles in Fort McMurray, and decide what the team needs to do to begin their rise against the Spruce Grove Saints.

Reminiscent of the home opener against the Saints, Sherwood Park went into the third period up 2-1 over the Oil Barons, thanks to goals from Jaron Desnoyers and Caelum Dick. Unfortunately, also like that first game, the Cru gave up four unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes to finish off 5-2. Saturday was a game to forget, dropping that one 7-1, and Gus Bylin was in net for all 7 goals after Marek Pocherewny made the start the night before.

Dawson had a chance to chat with assistant coach and assistant general manager Jeff Woywitka about how the team has performed in the first couple of months, and what the team needs to do to win more games. Also a guest on the show is Cale Ashcroft, making his return over the weekend, and talking about his road to recovery as well as his nomination too the NHL’s Central Scouting.

The Crusaders have had a struggling powerplay all season, that’s no secret. But they went into Tuesday looking to turn that around, as Logan Hauer and Brett Ursulak both made their mark on the Cru’s three attempts, all of which happened in the first half of the game. Josh Rule broke a late tie to put Sherwood Park up 3-2, and collected an empty netter to seal the game 4-2. Dawson had a chance to speak with Ursulak on the squad’s special teams unit, and where the team currently sits in the standings.

Dawson also had a chance to chat with Josh Rule ahead of the weekend about the team sticking together and closing out games, as well as the game plan heading into Fort McMurray.

It was a very close contest on Friday and a low-scoring one at that. After a scoreless first, Cody Pisarczyk opened the gates, and Bruce MacGregor tied it at one late in the frame with his first goal in nearly 600 days. The third saw two Saints goals, and a flurry of Crusader chances, but Spruce Grove was able to hang on for the 3-1 decision. Gus Bylin made his fourth consecutive start, turning aside 22 shots in the loss.

Dawson also had a chance to chat with new Sherwood Park acquisition Carter Chorney ahead of the Thunder matchup, about how he’s fit himself into the lineup, especially on such short notice.

Opening the scoring at the Randy Rosen Rink on Saturday was Ashton McNelly, to the sounds of 500+ fans crowding the stands. Caelum Dick pots his first of two on the game, the Wolverines came back for two in the second period but Dick snipes his second goal home for the overtime winner.

Sunday against Bonnyville was a slightly different contest, Josh Rule gets the Crusaders on the board but just 24 seconds pass and Kash Rasumussen gets the first of four unanswered goals for the Pontiacs. Starter Gus Bylin made 31 saves in the contest.

Dawson also had a chance to chat with defenceman Cade Christenson ahead of the Saints matchup, talking the previous weekend and how he’s developed his game so far.

Reeling from a 4-0 loss to the struggling Grande Prairie Storm, the Crusaders had their work cut out for them facing a Wolverines squad looking for their 6th win in a row.

Mitchell Joss keeps his team lead in points with two assists and Bode Hagan and Caelum Dick each potted three points (including Dick’s first goal of his career) in the victory. Now Sherwood Park preps for their third and fourth games in five and six nights respectively, and they start against the very same Wolverines team they beat on the 13th.

Dawson also had a chance to chat with three point man Hagan about what it’s been like fitting in with the team and how he feels it’s gone so far; as well, a conversation with Caelum Dick on how the team has adapted to the road trip and the ebbs and flows of the schedule at large.

Coming off a win against Drumheller to end the AJHL Showcase, Sherwood Park went all the way to the border to take on Lloydminster. Although the top line was held pointless, forward Zac Maxwell continues his impressive scoring pace, and new acquisition Bode Hagan nets his first as a Crusader; but the Bobcats proved to be too much, taking an 8-2 decision. With a few days off and an opportunity to regroup, the Crusaders are hungry to finish off their road trek with a pair of wins against the Grande Prairie Storm and Whitecourt Wolverines.

Zach and Dawson also discuss Sherwood Park’s goaltending situation, as well as some of the challenges they must face in order to overcome a surging Wolverines squad.

The Crusaders had their work cut out for them in Saturday’s matchup against the host Brooks Bandits, and eventually fell short by a score of 4-2. Evan Arnold got himself on the scoresheet, and Gus Bylin made 33 saves, but the Bandits proved to be too much. However, the team bounced back on Sunday against the Drumheller Dragons, taking a comeback 5-4 win in the shootout. Dawson had a chance to speak with forward Zac Maxwell, who got his first two on the season in the affair, to catch up and get a closer look at the past weekend.

Dawson also spoke with coach and general manager Adam Manah on how the team is shaping up a month into the season, and how he would like to see it moving forward

The Crusaders continue their eight-game road trip into Lloydminster against the Bobcats and hope to build on their successes from the Showcase.

After a rough 3-0 first period in last Saturday’s game against the Storm, Sherwood Park just couldn’t come back from the deficit and dropped the decision 6-5. Jaron Desnoyers collected his first AJHL goal in his first game, and Dawson had a chance to speak with him to get an idea of what his progression has been like coming out of camp.

Game two was a much different story, seeing the offense return the favor on the Storm en route to a 6-3 victory. Gus Bylin made 27 saves in the bounce-back win.

Dawson also caught up with AJHL Rookie of the Week Logan Hauer on his recent performance, and what some of the guys are doing to keep focused on the long road trip ahead.

The Crusaders had to put up a fight in Drayton Valley, squeaking out a 4-3 overtime decision, but a much better result than the 5-0 loss they suffered to open the preseason. Goals from Mitchell Joss and Austin Cook highlighted the offensive side of the game, and on the back end, goaltender Marek Pocherewny made and won his first AJHL start, making 41 saves.

Dawson had a chance to speak with Marek on the game that was, as well as highlight some learning lessons from the first few practices and what the team has done to gel together thus far.

The Crusaders now head north for a pair of games in Grande Prairie, who are still without a win on the young season.

Sherwood Park faces a tall task, but the group is confident that they have the skills and mentality to come out on top.
