Wednesday’s tilt against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons was a thriller, although a relatively uneventful first period; only one goal, coming shorthanded courtesy of Danny Ciccarello. In the middle frame, the Oil Barons made it 2-0, but the Cru fought back. Evan Arnold and Cale Ashcroft knotted things up at two, then the two teams traded goals to close out the period. Rider McCallum gave Fort McMurray a lead five minutes into the third, and Mitchell Joss tied the game with less than 20 seconds to play. Unfortunately, the Cru were bested in the shootout and walk away with a 5-4 loss.
Dawson had a chance to speak with Ashcroft as well as assistant coach Adam Sergerie ahead of tonight’s contest against Canmore, about the team’s road trip as well as the strange scheduling in the month of January.

Friday’s contest against the Okotoks Oilers was a frustrating one for Sherwood Park, as they collected just one goal in a 2-1 loss. The next night in Olds happened to be a much different story, with both Arnold brothers, Zac Maxwell, and Bruce MacGregor all tallied for the Cru and they went home with a 4-1 victory to close out the skid; the team collected five out of eight points in the last four games.

On this episode of Crusaders Pregame, hosts Dawson Petryshen discuss some major moves Sherwood Park has made over the last little while, and preview tonight’s matchup against the Lloydminster Bobcats,
Looking for a rebound against a division rival, the Crusaders hosted the Lloydminster Bobcats for the final time this season in the Randy Rosen Rink. Still with many affiliates, things did not start well. Outshot 18-5 in the first 20 minutes and going down 2-0, Lloyd added another near the end of the second after a much better middle frame. The Cru would continue push back and tally two goals to come within one but an empty net goal by Ethan Aucoin would seal the game for the Bobcats.
Sherwood Park would go on to make a handful of trades, including sending Colby Garner to the Melville Millionaires (SJHL), trading Tyler Bates to the Blackfalds Bulldogs for forward Jace Benvie and defenceman Juliano Santalucia, and acquiring forward Wyatt Marlow from the BCHL.
Dawson had a chance to speak with Benvie after his first practice with the team, and discussed what the transition has been like.

Coming off a 4-1 win against the same Wolverines of before the break, Sherwood Park was facing a big problem: they had five affiliate players on their roster. While the Cru made it close in the final 40 minutes, a four goal first period from the Wolverines carried them to a 6-1 victory. The following night in Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park played the Saints very well for the first two periods, including a shorthanded goal by Zac Maxwell, but three goals in the third from Spruce and the Saints walked away with a 5-1 decision.

Looking to head into the holiday break with momentum, the Cru faced off against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons and Whitecourt Wolverines on a home and home series. The former of the two games ended in heartbreak for Sherwood Park, as they went into the third period up 3-0 over the Mob but a five-goal performance led by Taige Harding gave Fort McMurray the win. Following this, the Crusaders went into Whitecourt the next night and bounced back with a 4-1 win including Levi Fesyk’s first AJHL goal.
All the action can be found on HockeyTV, puck drop is at 7:15 on Wednesday, December 29 at the Randy Rosen Rink and 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Grant Fuhr Arena. Zach and Dawson will have the call Wednesday from Sherwood Park.

After a big 4-1 win over the Drumheller Dragons, the Crusaders hoped to continue to gain ground on the Bobcats. Bruce MacGregor opened the scoring just five and a half minutes in, but on the very next play, former Crusader Tanner Fincaryk ties the game at one apiece. Lloydminster would then erupt for four goals in the second; Carter Chorney would beat Kolby Thornton for the team’s second powerplay goal of the game but it wasn’t enough as Jared Miller added one more and the Bobcats walked away with a 6-2 decision.

On this episode of Crusaders Pregame, hosts Zach Marks and Dawson Petryshen look back on the weekend split against the Brooks Bandits and Drumheller Dragons, and preview the third matchup in as many weeks against the Lloydminster Bobcats.
Looking to bounce back from a 4-1 loss to the very same Bobcats, the Crusaders went into Brooks to take on the Bandits. With a three goal first period, goals coming from Dario Beljo, Aiden Fink and Hunter Wallace, the Bandits rode that wave to a 6-0 win. The very next night, the Cru headed to Drumheller, and had a much better result. Ashton McNelly opened the scoring with a nifty drop pass from Zac Maxwell, Myles Hilman tied things up 50 seconds into the second, but goals from Cale Ashcroft and Bruce MacGregor plus an empty netter from Bode Hagan sealed a 4-1 victory of their own. Marek Pocherewny was outstanding, making 32 saves.

With Lloydminster looking for revenge after a close 3-2 decision just the week before, the Bobcats came out swinging. Matthew Swanson had the lone goal of the first, but Mack Stewart and former Crusader Tanner Fincaryck found the back of the net to give themselves a 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd. Sherwood Park got 33 shots the way of Kolby Thornton, and all but one was stopped as Carter Chorney broke the shutout bid with 57 seconds left in regulation. The Bobcats would add an empty netter to take a 4-1 decision.
