  • Pascal Hügli: Switzerland, capitalism, socialism, and Bitcoin
    Crypto Voices: Episode 71
    Show support appreciated: 35iDYDYqRdN2x6KGcpdV2W1Hy3AjGje9oL
Matthew & Fernando interview Pascal Hügli, an independent researcher and journalist from Switzerland.
Pascal covers his fascinating article from March where he poses the question, was industrial revolution-era Switzerland capitalistic, or socialistic? He looks at the life of Alfred Escher, a radical liberal of the time, and how the banking system tied into the growth of the Swiss economy. He gives some good perspective on what actually is "capitalism" and what is "socialism." He draws parallels to Bitcoin and the digitization of the world today, to the industrialization in Switzerland (and Europe) that occurred in the 19th century. We conclude with some thoughts on Bitcoin's potential, and the role of leaders and regulations in the ecosystem. Keep an eye out for his book that is coming out later this year.

    Show support appreciated: 35iDYDYqRdN2x6KGcpdV2W1Hy3AjGje9oL
Matthew & Fernando interview investor and money manager Tyler Jenks of Lucid Investment Strategies.
Tyler goes in depth on an article he wrote in January, a thesis covering all of the world's wealth versus its liabilities, and "the long and winding road to $10 million bitcoin." We discuss some very interesting global and macro scenarios regarding the value of gold and bitcoin, and what the IMF and BIS may do in the case of major sovereign debt defaults. We cover the good old inflation versus deflation debate. He gives some reasons why bitcoin could be the only asset to remain outside the purview of state regulation, even though this is very difficult to predict. We close with some specific offerings and strategies that Lucid Investment offers.

    Crypto Voices: Episode 66
    Show support appreciated: 35iDYDYqRdN2x6KGcpdV2W1Hy3AjGje9oL
Matthew & Fernando interview Bill Barhydt, founder and CEO of Abra.
Bill has extensive experience in Silicon Valley and fintech, from Goldman Sachs to Netscape. In 2014, Bill founded Abra to democratize finance across the globe using Bitcoin. Their product is very interesting and unique, focusing on the on/off-ramps with fiat today, but also geared toward freeing the user to fully control their funds and finances in the future.
We speak about some general Bitcoin and internet history, to Bitcoin scaling, and focus the most time on how the Abra product works. Abra allows users to quickly and easily hold and convert both cryptocurrencies and fiat, locally and under their full control, due to Abra's unique collateralization model using the Bitcoin network and hedging partners. Bill ends with some further thoughts on Abra's direction and vision for the future; for example, entering the lending markets.

  • Monetary Base Companion (2018 Q4)
    Crypto Voices: Episode 64
    Show support appreciated: 35iDYDYqRdN2x6KGcpdV2W1Hy3AjGje9oL
Matthew updates on the Crypto Voices Monetary Base exhibit for 2018 Q4, which will make this episode a lot easier to listen to if viewing simultaneously; it's located here: https://cryptovoices.com/basemoney
Bitcoin is unquestionably unlike anything else in the (financial) world. However, if you are going to try and compare Bitcoin's supply with other supply curves in the financial world, don't. The *only* money supply you can compare it to is fiat's "Monetary Base," or "Base Money."
Firstly, something needs to be used as a medium of exchange to technically be called "money."
    Gold used to be.
    Fiat is now.
    Bitcoin very well could be.
But don't get carried away. We need to compare bitcoin (and gold) to fiat's "base money" supply, and *only* to the base money supply.
M1/M2/M3 and all others simply aren't comparable. Why? Because those supplies include "claims" on base money.
