Kap and Gordon talk about who on the Cubs could potentially make the All Star Game this summer.

They also talk about the Cubs bad bullpen. Will they fix it this season? Is this a lost season already? How do we judge David Ross as the manager when he's been given a bad bullpen and offense. But they do both have some issues with Ross's lineup construction.

Kap also wants to see Miguel Amaya get more playing time as a catcher, but Gordon doesn't necessarily agree. He likes the Cubs slow-playing Amaya.

#DavidKaplan & #GordonWittenmyer are the best #Cubs sparring partners in the business and right out of the gate they show disgust at the worst team in the National League.  How did they get here?  Why are they here?  After an above average April, it's been an absolutely awful May.  It even included the team giving out Hall of Famer #BillyWilliams bobbleheads with the WRONG NUMBER!!!!  The #Reds swept the #Cubs last weekend.  Are they actually a team with a better future?

Then, the boys pivot to #KyleHendricks, who returned to the rotation for the first time since July of 2022.  Kap says he thinks Kyle is back to his former self.  

Gordon poses the question to Kap.  Where does Kyle Hendricks fit in Cubs history and lore as a pitcher who isn't Hall a Famer, but one of the all-time Cubs greats.  Is he a great?  Some Cubs greats believe so.  Comment below ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

The conversation pivots to not if the Cubs will be sellers but who will they sell when they do?  Kap believes they don't have much to sell, but #CodyBellinger appears to be the lone position player that they have to do so assuming he's healthy sooner than later.

The guys go through young arms if they do decide to move on from #MarcusStroman.

Finally - the guys discuss accountability.  Does #TomRicketts have the where with all to hold #JedHoyer, #DavidRoss and the front office accountable for failure?  Because Gordon believes that it's easiest to tear it down...but to build it up and keep it that way?  That's the talent...and the Cubs haven't proven it after the first one.

At the end - the guys laugh and rip the fact that Billy Williams'  bobblehead had the wrong number when given away on Saturday night against the Reds.

David Kaplan and Gordon Wittenmyer discuss the Cubs dismal 2-7 road trip that has put the Cubs in their worst spot of the season.  But, the guys debate whether this week is the key to figuring out just who this team is.  The rotation has struggled, but they're getting Kyle Hendricks back as soon as this week.  Hayden Wesneski is in Iowa and Jameson Taillon has been awful with an ERA north of 8.  

Cubs GM Jed Hoyer is taking the accountability of the bullpen, and saying it shouldn't be on manager David Ross.  However, Kap believes Rossy should be held accountable, too, especially when Christopher Morel has homered in 9 times in 12 games.  Hoyer also addressed why Morel was in Iowa for 5+ weeks.

Gordon joins the podcast in the middle of nowhere, literally.  Why?  Well, he answers that question as to why his GPS took him there.

At the end of the conversation, the guys discuss whether the Cubs should approach Marcus Stroman about an extension because he has an opt out after the 2023 season.  Gordon believes, wait and see.

David Kaplan and Gordon Wittenmyer have a spirited discussion about why it took the Cubs so long to call up Christopher Morel. Morel was red hot at AAA this season and has continued that pace after a call up to the big leagues. He’s rejuvenated the lineup and has shown capability as an everyday player. Kap wonders why it took so long. 

The bullpen ineffectiveness, particularly with Michael Fulmer is also another debate. Kap doesn’t understand why he’s getting the ball late in games in high leverage situations. Gordon’s take is that if he’s not capable of getting outs in that role, it serves best to move on. 

Though the Cubs have sputtered of late - Gordon says it shouldn’t be because of the rotation, while Kap is more targeted towards David Ross.

The Cubs had a tough weekend in Miami, but Kap and Gordon still took away some positives. The Cubs were in every game, Justin Steele looked good again, and Patrick Wisdom keeps hitting home runs.

The guys also go over their biggest takeaways from the Cubs first month of play. Both of them agree that the offense has been better than expected, but the bullpen hasn't been as good as expected. Kap wonders if Jed will actually look to add to the bullpen if the team keeps playing well. Aroldis Chapman will most likely be available again at this trade deadline. Will Jed want to give away the assets to aquire him?

Kap still wants to know when the Cubs will bring up Matt Mervis. Kap says, if he's ready, he should be here. Gordon thinks the Cubs have to at least be thinking about Mervis up. But he also knows the Cubs will take their time making that decision.

The guys also discuss the impact Yan Gomes has had on the team and whether the Cubs will struggle without him. On the other hand, Miguel Amaya finally gets the call to the bigs. How long will he be here?

The guys also discuss who the best pitcher in Chicago is right now. Is it Justin Steele? Is it Dylan Cease?

#DavidKaplan & #GordonWittenmyer are buying in, well, let’s be honest, Kap had long ago, but after a series win over the #Dodgers, even Gordon is tipping his cap to what the #Cubs have done to start the 2023 season.  Gordon has the stats to back it up. 

Most notably, the pair highlight the performance of #MarcusStroman & #JustinSteele in the rotation. They’ve been lights out, and with Steele, it goes way back to last year. The offense is for real, and #DansbySwanson appears to be the real deal after signing a mega deal in the offseason.
