Cubs REKAP Podcast

The guys talk about why 4 of #ScottBoras's big clients are still on the market, including #CodyBellinger. Is Scott asking for too much money? Or is there collusion? Will the #Cubs actually agree to something with Cody or will another team swoop in and pay him what he wants? Some are starting to think the Cubs aren't actually going to get Bellinger. But #JeffPassan said on the radio yesterday that he did think the Cubs would sign one of those four Scott Boras clients. Listen in to who Kap and Gordon think that guy is.

They also discuss all of the projections for the season. The Cubs are being thought of as a world-beater. Is everyone underestimating them? Or are they a very average team?

Kap and Gordon discuss the slow free agency offseason. Why are there so many big names left on the market? Will the Cubs sign Cody Bellinger? Should the Cubs be going after more free agents or should they leave room for their young prospects to play? Can they do both? Kap and Gordon have a lively debated about this and more.

Kap and Gordon discuss whether or not the Cubs are still a destination for big time free agents. Before they won the World Series in 2016, free agents wanted to come to the Cubs to be a part of the team that would finally win the championship in Chicago. But that's no longer a selling point and the Cubs don't spend at the top of the market, so will they ever attract the top free agents?

The #chicagocubs have yet to do ANYTHING this offseason at the 2 month mark and into the calendar year of 2024.  They're not the only team that's been quiet, but after a record breaking contract to #craigcounsell, it was expected that the #cubs would be BIG spenders this offseason.  So...why so quiet?  Is #codybellinger nearing a return?  Does he HAVE to in order for this offseason to be labeled a success.  Are the #cincinnatireds and #stlouiscardinals more division winner ready than the Cubs currently are?

Kap and Gordon discuss the Cubs introduction of Craig Counsell as manager.  He won the press conference, but what does it mean when it comes to free agency and on the field.  What is a successful offseason?  What marks a failure?

With the Cubs being 'All-In' with a $40 million dollar manager, the guys discuss the pursuit of superstar Shohei Ohtani.  Are the Cubs a viable landing spot after missing on him the first time when he went to Anaheim?  What would it mean and who would follow or where would the Cubs pivot if they don't get him.

There are several teams poised to take steps back, including the Padres.  The Cubs are linked to superstar Juan Soto.  Why is he the perfect player for Wrigley Field.

And, before the Cubs sign one free agent, are the already the NL Central favorites in 2024?  That and much more!

Kap is fired up because the Chicago Cubs have hired a new manager, Craig Counsell. The news shocked the baseball world has the Cubs relieved manager David Ross of his duties and shockingky hired Craig Counsell to one of the largest manager contracts ever. Most people in baseball assumed the Mets were going to get Craig, but Jed Hoyer operated stealthily and under the radar and swept in and hired him away from the Mets. Reportedly, Counsell wanted to stay in the Midwest, where he likes living and where his kids are in school. This hiring signals to the baseball world that the Cubs are back and ready to spend.

Kap and Gordon talk about the baseball playoffs. More specifically they focus on the Phillies who are playing great baseball and have 2 former Cubs and 1 guy who named his dog Wrigley. The guys talk about those three players and if the Cubs are going to spend big dollars this offseason like the Phillies have. They also talk about how the Rangers have spent big money, which has also lead to their success.

They guys discuss the state of the current Cubs team as well. What do they need to add to be a real contender? Both guys agree they need some new arms, but what else? The guys have an intense debate about who the Cubs will be willing to go after and how much they'll be willing to spend.

Finally, they talk about the contemporary baseball hall of fame committee who will meet in December. There are a number of managers, umpires, and executives who will be on the ballot. Who do the guys think should get in?
