Cubs REKAP Podcast

Kap and Gordon discuss whether or not they think the Cubs will go after Juan Soto. Soto has one year left on his rookie deal and is not yet 25 years old. He'll cost a lot, but with just one year of control left, he can't possibly cost too much. They also discuss whether or not getting Soto should stop them from going after Bellinger as well.

They also discuss whether letting Kyle Schwarber walk for nothing is one of the biggest mistakes the Cubs have ever made. Kyle is back in the post-season again, and the Cubs let him go basically because of money. They didn't want to pay the $8 million to keep him. Was that as bad as the Twins releasing David Ortiz back in 2002? What about the Orioles getting rid of Jake Arrieta?

Kap and Gordon discuss whether the 2023 Chicago Cubs season was a disappointment or a success.  They seem to differ on several topics.

Is Cody Bellinger as good as gone?  Or is he coming back on a multi-year deal?

Will the Cubs trade for Mets slugger Pete Alonso?  What will that package look like?

The guys breakdown GM Jed Hoyer's postseason press conference.  Kap thinks it's the best a GM has looked in Chicago in years, while Gordon believes we shouldn't be handing out awards for teams that fail to make a postseason.

All that and more on the 2023 season wrap up edition of the pod.

Kap and Gordon debate if the Cubs season is over or not. Kap and Gordon both agree that the Cubs made a mistake in not trading for more pitching at the deadline. Gordon tells the story about a pitcher that he heard the Cubs thought they were getting. The Cubs may have had a better chance in September if they had added more bullpen help. Especially after they traded for Candelario, they should have done more.

Can the Cubs sweep the Brewers to give themselves a chance to get a Wild Card spot?

If the Cubs don't get to the playoffs, will they push their chips in a sign some studs to take the Cubs to the next level next year? Will they re-sign Bellinger? Kap and Gordon disagree that the Cubs will pay the necessary price for him. Will they pursue a third baseman?

#Gordon stopped at #WhiteCastle and while enjoying a #slider, he realized the Cubs have something in common with the fast food joint. #Kap and Gordon also break down the last two weeks of the season. Do they think the #ChicagoCubs will get into the playoffs? If they do, can they do any real damage? Who do the guys think has been the #MVP of the #Cubs this season? Is it the obvious answer - #Bellinger or is there someone else to consider?

Kap and Gordon discuss the state of the Cubs pitching. Suddenly they are looking a little bit short in both the rotation and the bullpen. Do they have the horses to get to the postseason?

The Cubs really need to win games next week when they are playing some easier teams before they finish the season against the Braves and Brewers.

Kap and Gordon discuss the Cubs recent hot streak. They talk about some of the young pitchers that have contributed to the Cubs' recent success. Kap says the Cubs are going to be a tough out in the playoffs. Does Gordon agree?

They also take a look at the rest of the Cubs' schedule. How difficult is the final month for the Cubs?

After Justin Steele's performance against the Giants, is he the favorite to win the Cy Young? Does Bellinger have a shot at winning the MVP?

How many teams in the National League are better than the Cubs? Are the Cubs the second best team in the NL? Can their offense continue to hit in the postseason?

If Jed Hoyer knew how good this team would perform in August, would he have added more to the team at the deadline? Lance Lynn might have been someone the Cubs should have looked at.

Kap and Gordon discuss how Shohei Ohtani's injury will impact his impending free agency. Should the Cubs still go after him? Would he consider a short term deal while he rehabs his arm?

They also discuss the Cubs rotation. What seemed like a strength a month or two ago has become a major concern. The guys debate who they still trust in the rotation and who might be able to help from the minor leagues. They also discuss the likelihood of Justin Steele winning the Cy Young.

And finally they debate whether or not the Cubs can still win the division despite their rotation issues. Which upcoming series are the most important?
