Count Carl von Cosel believed he had met his soulmate when he laid eyes on Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos in 1930. From the start, though, their romance had its share of problems. First, they were both already married, but Carl could easily pretend neither of their spouses existed. Second, Elena had been diagnosed with the then-fatal prognosis of tuberculosis, but even after she died, Carl wasn’t deterred. He simply stole her corpse, made it suitable for cohabitation, and lived with her body for the next seven years until his shocking secret was discovered.

Now that Graham Young was working at John Hadland Laboratories, his victim pool had expanded. Out of the nearly 70 members of staff to catch the so-called “Bovingdon Bug,” two would never recover: Bob Egle and Fred Biggs. Graham Young had always been a strange child whose fascination with poisons saw him employing his extensive expertise to procure lethal quantities of various toxic substances with which to experiment. Imagine committing a crime and then being so angry at having been convicted that you spend more than 20 years after your release trying to get your conviction overturned. This is Walter Leroy Moody Jr. in a nutshell. When false narratives and unfounded appeals didn’t produce the result he had hoped for, he channeled his anger into murder by sending bombs to innocent people. If he couldn’t have his way, he would direct all his rage at the court responsible for denying his appeals.

By the time investigators connected 50-year-old Richard Rogers to the murders of four middle-aged gay and bisexual men whose remains were discovered in garbage bags between 1991 and 1993, it had been nearly three decades since Richard had first been acquitted of murder after claiming self-defense. Richard had come a long way from hiding corpses in tents. He’d realized dismemberment was a much better method of body disposal. Richard may have evolved, but so too had fingerprinting technology, and the indefensible murder he had gotten away with years earlier had paved the way for authorities to put him behind bars for good.

Using the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. as his murderous roadmap, Gary Ray Bowles left innocent men dead from Florida to Maine in 1994, killing six men before being apprehended at a Florida employment office. Gary thought of himself as a hustler, someone who exploited the benevolence of others, then turned on them in the cruelest way possible bymurdering them, violently stuffing something in their mouth, stealing from them, and then moving on to the next unsuspecting victim.

Having made a murderous New Year's resolution, Colin Ireland studied serial killers before putting his own plan into action. Then, in the spring of 1993, he tortured and killed five gay men: Peter Walker, Christopher Dunn, Perry Bradley III, Andrew Collier, and Emanuel Spiteri. Posing as a BDSM practitioner at the Coleherne Arms pub in West London, Colin preyed on a vulnerable community who was often targeted rather than protected by the police. His need for recognition manifested in staged crime scenes and phone calls to the police, and ultimately, all his precautions came to naught when a series of slip-ups led investigators right to him.

Because it’s that time of year again, in this episode, we’re covering two cases that happened on Christmas Eve:

On December 24, 2014, Dustin Lee Klopp and Stephanie Kilhefner Klopp’s two children would be made orphans, just not all at once. Having driven them to his parents’ house for the usual festivities the following day, Dustin called the police to confess to his wife’s murder and turned himself in. Years after making it, he had finally followed through on his threat to kill her. 

Exactly three years earlier, William Wallace would abuse his wife, Za’Zell Preston, for the last time. Unwilling to leave the apartment they shared with her two daughters and their newborn son after murdering her, he slept in the bed next to her lifeless body and then propped her on the couch the next morning while her daughters opened gifts.
