Worksite Well-being Strategist

Mari is an award-winning author, speaker and worksite well-being strategist. She is the CEO and founder of Advancing Wellness. 

For over 30 years, she has served in various marketing, consulting and executive roles across multiple industries. She has helped to create workplaces where both the business and the people thrive.

Two Types of Environment

Her book, The Thriving Hive, recently won the silver award in the Axiom Business Book Awards 2019 for the Business Fable category. The book tells about two main characters. One is the CEO who inherited her role from a mentor.

This CEO had conversations with the mentor about her struggles. As they continue, they visit two hives namely the Dive Hive and the Thrive Hive. 

“Have you ever worked in something that you would describe as a dive hive or have you have worked in something that you would describe as a thrive hive?” – Mari Ryan 

According to Mari, people know when they are in a dysfunctional culture. It is a culture that creates stress and does not encourage an environment where people can work at their best selves. This also adds a negative impact to the business as a whole.

Dimensions of Workplace Well-being

People typically think about workplace well-being from the individual level. Mari shares that it is important to use the word well-being instead of wellness. Wellness has been around for decades and has been used to refer to the physical health of a person.

“If we are in a place where we are struggling from a financial perspective, that can weigh down every other aspect of our life.” – Mari Ryan

Workplace well-being has five dimensions, the first one being the physical dimension. It is that dimension which enables people to think about their body and about the activities that help them to improve it. 

The second is the financial dimension of well-being. Financial struggles can cause a lot of stress. It can distract people from work and can ruin their relationship with others, including their employers.

Culture is not location-centric. Nowadays, people can come together to work remotely from anywhere in the world. As David mentioned, culture is a behavior.

There are also different perspectives available. A person may enjoy engaging in a direct manner, while others may prefer to communicate their thoughts indirectly through gestures and other means of expression.

The brain has three distinct areas. The first is the primitive side which tends to sabotage everything that a person sets to do. The other side is the cerebral cortex which is the rational side. 

Developing Culture from the Inside Out

People come to work with different personalities. These personalities present themselves in either the natural state or the adaptive state.

According to Mariana, true mastery comes from brain control. Leaders struggle to do that for themselves. They intentionally seek ways to grow the business.

Employees work differently. They always do the same thing according to their job. When they lose motivation, leaders can step in and encourage them to keep going.

Many years ago, the idea of security was simple. People hire guards and use security devices to protect their physical stores or products. Nowadays, it has evolved into something rather more complicated with the rise of the Internet.

Security is not to be undervalued. According to Marc, a small business could be two people running a business from their home. Their marketing, sales, and other initiatives could fill their database with 50 million customers.

Security is not just an issue for big companies. Small businesses must also take into account the security of the data they possess. It is not only the right thing to do but is also a good business strategy.  

Security from Top to Bottom

Communication is key in relaying the importance of security across an organization. From top executives to entry level employees, it is important to bake security and privacy right from the beginning.

Startups may not have the same amount of investment in security as big enterprises. Still, it is critical that they allocate some of their resources early on. As businesses grow, good security practices must also be kept before it is already too late.

She and her partner established systems the first day they started the company. These helped them to do well and to stay on the page.

Millennials in the Workplace

When they started in 2002, they decided to exclusively hire people with 10 years of experience. These workers were perceived to work more efficiently than newbies. She also believed that they would know what to do all the time. 

“You should look at the business model, because probably the business model that got you into that situation is not the business model that will take you out of that situation.” – Lee Caraher

Things changed when the financial crisis hit in 2008. Not enough people had as much experience for them to hire. They reviewed their business model and changed it.

That was when they considered hiring young people. They hired 6 millennials in 2010. But within 3 months, they were all gone.

Gabe founded CopywriterToday.net with a mission to help small business owners reach their audience through content. He started building websites for clients as a freelancer, and later also accommodated their needs for content.

Now, his company has grown to a team of 50 remote workers. He developed a recruitment system to find qualified writers. They are team members that are not only highly skilled but are also compatible with their company culture.

Where Culture Defeats Talent

Gabe believes in hiring for culture fit and not just for expertise. For two and a half years, he had a very talented employee. They pushed for products and process.  

“As I started to shift and grow, I realized that I really wanted to have a team of people around me that I cared about — people who also cared about me and our customers.” – Gabe Arnold

Not soon and in the middle of the night, that employee suddenly quit. The experience left Gabe with an unforgettable lesson on culture. For awhile after, he filled in the position until he found someone new.

Signs an Employee Is a Culture Misfit

What are the key indicators that an employee is hurting your company culture? According to Gabe, among them are arrogance and an unteachable spirit.   

“They actually quit because I asked them to live up to the same standards that they held everybody else to.” – Gabe Arnold

Such employees cannot hold themselves accountable to the same standards, even simple ones like being punctual. In the beginning, they could be very on point with what they can offer. But in the end, they fail to deliver what they said they would.
