“Don’t get angry but get curious.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 59th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the University of Washington’s Assistant Strength Coach Nic Higgins. Nic, thanks for being with us today.

Before we start, who is Nic Higgins?

I’m Nic, a simple guy who tries to keep it real.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career

Needing to communicate better has brought him back to being simple and finding what’s most important.

    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?

As it relates to our field, what do we ultimately get to transfer from training?
What are you going to take with you from this pandemic?

    3) What’s your escape?

    Walking/hiking the trails of Washington.

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this weeks Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com

This COVID-19 Pandemic has provided one thing for all of us, and that is time to reflect a bit. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share the first of those reflections, and that is how powerful it is to have a purpose. This purpose has both a positive and a negative side, both building up and breaking down, but a byproduct of it is that it has led to more than one way of improving me as a person and as a coach.

“We’re going to be forgotten at some point, so we need to do something that we won’t forget.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 58th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Performance at East Tennessee State University, Dr. Brad DeWeese. Doc, thanks for being with us today.

Before we start, who is Dr. Brad DeWeese?

A hip hop head who’s still a coach with an administration role.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career

When I was young I wanted to be the best coach in the world and have a medal count no one could catch. All I saw was numbers, and then Steve Holcomb died. That changed the focus from the numbers to the people.

    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?

Is it really turtles all the way down? What is it that unifies our existence?

    3) What’s your escape?

My four kids are my escape, I love seeing them react to new things.

  • Episode 256- Dr. Josh Nelson- Influencing Behavior For Positive Results
“We don’t want to give information, we want to impact positive behaviors”

“Boil it down to the why and it will drive everything that you’re doing.”
This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. In this weeks episode of the podcast Dr. Josh Nelson joins us to discuss ways that we can help educate athletes and coaches and impact positive behavior changes for the people they get to work with. He then discusses how he periodizes this “education” and why he chooses what he chooses at different times of the year. This includes how they look at the different forms of stress (school, sports, social, current events) and how those impact what messages they are trying to get across to everyone involved to help them be better. This discussing is full of great ways for coaches to help figure out direction for them to help communicate to everyone they get to work with on how to better take care of themselves to be able to perform at a high level. This includes some great analogies and the role of social media to “meet the kids where they’re at” and get messages across to people in the different mediums available.
