  • My Thoughts Monday #161- Jay DeMayo- Does Our Mission Match THE Mission?
“If winning is what is the goal then your metrics need to show you’re improving that likelihood.”

“If the experience of the young people is the primary objective, we need to provide them with a positive experience, and if the things that we maybe have been taking away, because we feel like they don’t impact performance, actually drive the positive experience, then maybe those things should go back in.”

“Are we following the mission of what the department has, or are we following the mission of what we think it should be?”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. Check out this weeks Metric Minute and make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com

Conversations are consistently had where strength coaches talk with each other about how “sport coaches don’t get it” or “admin has no idea” when it comes to what we do and why we do things. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I try to put the shoe on the other foot and talk about how possibly we may be going at things incorrectly because we are not following the mission statement of the department.

  • Episode 260- Matt Gildersleeve- Judgement Without Context Is Ignorance
“That’s one of the tricky things, we say it’s working, but what is IT?”

This episode of The Podcast is brought to you by Exxentric, the makers of the kBox and kPulley. Exxentric is the world leader in fly wheel training technology providing multiple pieces to fit your budget and needs to better serve your athletes. North American customers looking for more info should contact Andreas at [email protected] or 503-739-1391. All others, or to learn more about the kBox, kPulley and flywheel training, please go to their website at: https://exxentric.com/.

In this weeks episode of The Podcast, I get to talk about the state of the strength and conditioning world with Matt Gildersleeve. After a brief run down of how he got up to Buffalo Sleeve starts discussing the role of perspective, and how taking a walk in a different direction opened his eyes to looking at things a bit differently. This leads us into a discussion of biases, including where they come from and how they can be both good and bad. After he gets me on a good rant we then get into the reductionist lens that coaches use, and how this could be a huge limiting factor to our profession moving forward. This includes a discussion about programming and having someone audit your work who has a different background and the role of hiring to bring a different point of view to help people be better. This talk is full of great learning situations and times that have impacted both of us to help us become the coaches we are today, some positive, some negative, but all led to progress.

We are hoping to provide the best possible content for strength coaches with each of our shows. If feel this could provide value for anyone else in the strength and conditioning field please feel free to share

  • My Thoughts Monday #160- Molly Binetti - What Type Of Environment Are You Creating?
“When we seek to understand we can then connect with, and create an environment that they want to be a part of because it matters to them.”

“We’re trying to ask question for people that don’t know those questions exist at times, and then we are turning around and getting upset when people aren’t willing to listen to the answers to the questions that they didn’t even know existed.”

This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance. Vald’s constant drive to help coaches find better information to drive more educated directions is second to none. How can you make the weight room an environment that your athlete’s want to be part of? This is a question that coaches have been digging to find better answers to for as long as there have been weight rooms. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday, Molly Binetti shares with us how autonomy can help contribute to, not just that, but also how well your athlete’s learn as well. Not only does Molly break down the why’s but she provides specific examples to HOW she does this with her athletes at USC, and where she’s seen success with this.
