The third installment of these big lessons during the pandemic boils down to one of the issues that we, as performance professionals, might be missing the boat with whatever form of monitoring we are utilizing. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share what I think about the questions we are trying to answer, and where the origin of these questions truly need to start from. Spoiler alert, more often than not, it’s not us.

  • Outside The Rack #60- Mike Potenza
“When you’re climbing up the ranks you learn to structure your program for your group so that you can manage them as efficiently as possible.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 60th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this show we are going to try to dive a little deeper into the minds of the top practitioners in the world of sport performance to learn a bit more about who they actually are and how they got to where they are at today. Today we are joined by the San Jose Sharks Director of Strength and Conditioning, Mike Potenza. Mike, thanks for being with us today.

Before we start, who is Mike Potenza?

As a coach I love to teach and make people better. As a family man I’m a blessed husband and father.

    1) Describe a learning situation that brought about an epiphany in your career

The first was my first whole year in the NHL, and my second was my first NHL combine. My other big epiphany was making it to the finals and thinking “who’s my next culture.”

    2) If you could ask one question and you know you would get the answer what would that be and why?

What’s the best way to reach the unreachable athlete?

    3) What’s your escape?

Playing with my kids or golfing.

As I continue on my pandemic reflections, this week I discuss one that kind of hit me like a ton of bricks. One of the topics that kept popping up during quarantine is the need for monitoring and tracking. This was even questioned by some because it’s something that many feel like we should have been doing all along. This is the topic of this weeks My Thoughts Monday. As we look at how sport coaches have handled these “adjustments”, or maybe we should say should NOT have handled them, it raises the question. Are sport coaches actually ready for monitoring and bigger metrics? Today, I give the reasons why I don’t think they are.
