Cynthia Rosen would rather paint outdoors working on location. Her paintings radiate an exuberant celebration of sparkling light, brilliant colors, and a world in motion. Cynthia’s marks are made boldly, with confidence, using a palette knife to apply luscious thick blocks of colors. Though she went to school to study art when she was younger, Cynthia put on pause painting while teaching and raising a family. In time, her burning desire to paint full-time was rekindled. She self-studied – learning from Facebook painting groups and workshops. Soon she was enthusiastically painting outdoors and participating in plein air events.
Viewing one of Cynthia's paintings is like listening to an improvisational jazz band. There is movement, rhythm, syncopation, dynamic range, unexpected interludes, and rich texture. Describing her approach to painting, she says there are two sides to her that have not totally melted yet. There is the very abstract side of her, influenced by non-objective color field artists such as Mark Rothko, and then there is her love of beautiful representational art. The resulting alchemy of abstract and representational art is work that sings in Cynthia’s unique, expressive voice. And, it’s a voice that some in the plein air community did not initially appreciate. Yet she stuck to her creative vision, one that connects with the many buyers of her art. To see one of Cynthia Rosen’s paintings is to see the hand of an artist who is not afraid of letting loose with color.
