For many fans of the true crime genre, serial killer Jeffery Dahmer has been a decades-long obsession. Netflix's miniseries DAHMER-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story reignited a legion of sycophants of the horrific serial killer.
As with all exploitative true crime, an insidious underbelly is exposed, which is retraumatizing for the victims and their family members, still coming to grips with the senseless destruction caused by a real-life monster.
Netflix and creator Ryan Murphy won critical acclaim for the show, and star Evan Peters took home a Best Actor Golden Globe in 2023 for his portrayal of the notorious serial killer.
In today's episode, we speak with Rita Isbell, the sister of Dahmer's victim Errol Lindsey. Isbell, whose harrowing victim's impact statement was recreated verbatim by actress DaShawn Barnes in the miniseries, shares her story of being blindsided by the show and the aftermath and the impact after she and others were dragged back into the spotlight 31 years later.
Hosts Terra Newell, Collier Landry and Rita Isbell were all featured in the Vice News documentary special "True Crime Scene" which aired on ViceTV on May 4, 2023.
This interview was recorded live as a part of the special.
