As we begin the book of Numbers, it is important to remember where we have come from. These people have been enslaved and estranged from their family worship practices for over 400 years. This time at Mt. Sinai is like a crash course in getting to know the God of the universe. God is clear that everything about them should be different, from the things they eat, to their care for the poor, even down to the way they set up their camp as they move through the wilderness towards their promised land.

As I read this, I couldn't help but relate to the unclean people who could not even come close to the camp in order to be declared clean. I am fully reliant upon Christ to come looking for me and to make the sacrifice on my behalf. The rest of my life will be a process of purification and holiness, but in God's eyes, I am fully cleansed.

Today, the focus shifts to dietary laws and other laws relating to ritual purity. These were provided to set the Israelites apart as holy and to allow them to come close to God's holiness without being consumed. Breaking these laws will make you unclean. However, this state of ritual impurity was not condemnation. Most of them were resolved naturally by time or washing. These are fulfilled in Christ who purifies his people by giving them a new heart.

This is a pretty straightforward section that lays out some of the specifics for the priests as they processed the offerings of the people. They had to keep the fire going constantly and they had specific places to eat the offerings that were brought. It should give us great encouragement that we no longer live under this system.
