Soft-spoken

Someone who is soft-spoken speaks quietly, calmly, and gently. They don’t need to be loud to be heard.
Examples:

1- She’s soft-spoken, but when she shares an idea, everyone listens — because she chooses her words carefully.

2- He’s a soft-spoken teacher. He explains things patiently, and his calm voice makes people feel safe to ask questions.

See eye to eye
means to agree completely or to share the same opinion with someone about something. If you “see eye to eye” with a person, you’re both on the same page.

Examples:
1- My sister and I rarely see eye to eye on movies—she loves horror films, while I’m more into comedies.
2- Two neighboring countries failed to see eye to eye on trade agreements, causing diplomatic strain and impacting global markets.

Helplessness is not the absence of solutions. It’s the absence of position.

Hard pass

 means a very strong and clear “no.”
Not maybe. Not let me think about it. Just a confident refusal. It’s informal and usually used in spoken English or casual messages.

Examples:

1- She was invited back to a job that had completely drained her. She read the email, took a breath, and thought, “Hard pass.

2- He considered waking up at 5 a.m. on his day off to help a friend move apartments. After a moment, he said,“ That’s a hard pass for me.”

Break the cycle

means to stop a repeated pattern — usually a negative or unhealthy one — and choose a different way forward. It’s about awareness, courage, and change.

Examples:

1- He realized he was always avoiding difficult conversations. By finally speaking up, he began to break the cycle of silence.

2- In families, habits and behaviors can pass from one generation to the next.
 Sometimes, choosing kindness, honesty, or boundaries is how we break the cycle.

Bare minimum

 means the smallest amount of effort, work, or responsibility needed to meet a basic requirement — nothing extra. It’s what you do when you’re tired, overwhelmed, or just trying to survive the moment.

Examples

1- During a really stressful week, he wasn’t aiming to be perfect. He focused on the bare minimum — showing up, replying, and getting through the day.

2- She used to go above and beyond at work, but after months of burnout, she decided to do the bare minimum to protect her energy.

Pet hate

A "pet hate" is something that particularly annoys or irritates someone, even though it might seem trivial or unimportant to others.

Examples:

1- Oprah’s pet hate is chewing gum. She’s mentioned that she finds it incredibly annoying and has banned it from her offices.

2- One of her pet hates at work is when colleagues don't clean up after themselves in the kitchen.
