* It looks like the next Mass Effect will be running on Unreal Engine 5, this reported by Eddie Makuch with Gamespot. Brenon Holmes on his Twitter page let it be known that Blowere is looking for talented programmers with Unreal Engine 4 and 5 experience and he added, “Come, join our team and work with us on the next Mass Effect game!” In addition to this bit of information Jeff Grubb, a reporter for Gamesbeat said this on his Twitter page, “And just to confirm, I’ve heard from a handful of sources now that this is the case. Obviously. And this was a choice made by the team putting the game together, which is how it should work.” And then he added a tweet after this that just said UE5, which means Unreal Engine 5. So it’s all but confirmed. I’m bit surprised and a lot relieved BioWare will not be utilizing EA’s frostbite engine, which had previously been used in Mass Effect: Andromeda, and was partially blamed for that games issues due to Frostbites complexity.

* In not so surprising news to a lot Double Fine says it’s working on multiple new projects, this according to a post on their crowdfunding page. This is what they had to say, “The studio is already splitting up into various teams and starting different projects that we think you’ll enjoy. We like experimentation here at Double Fine. Every game is a chance to explore new ideas, new visual styles or gameplay, emotions, and more.” They said their focus has moved to these new projects. They did add that they are still tracking incoming support tickets pertaining to their crowdfunding rewards and they are working with distributers to get everyone their rewards as soon as they can.

* Andrew Evans with GT Planet reports that Gran Turismo 7 booklet confirms Ferrari F8 and F12, plus more details on the game. This information was gotten from a Twitter user who posed the booklet, which was in Japanese. The booklet’s cover has a picture of the Ferrari F8 and F12, two cars not previously shown in the upcoming game. The booklet goes on to explain that you will be able to store 1,000 cars in your home garage, and this article suggests the game will be shipped with around 428 cars total for the game. A tuning shop is detailed in the booklet, including all the expected functions like tires, brakes, and suspension upgrades, turbos, superchargers, vehicle rigidity and weight modifications. Also mentioned in the booklet are the more than 90 circuit layouts, or tracks.

* Bohemia Interactive have officially debuted their new video game engine that they are calling Enfusion. Though the engine has been around and talked about since about 2017, this is their official unveiling for it. From what I gather DayZ has been using the Enfusion engine since about 2017. The engine has been developed alongside the updating of DayZ from its Alpha and Beta days when it ran on the Real Virtuality Engine. Bohemia says the engine will form the core of their future games. The engine has been under development for 4 years, though they do say that ideas and some of the foundation started back as early as 2014. “Currently there is a team of 30 developers involved in it. In terms of time, investment and human resources, it has become in recent times Bohemia Interactive’s most important project.” Founder and CEO Marek Spanel said, “our aging Real Virtuality engine, used in our Arma 3 title for example, has increasingly run up against its technological limits. Enfusion, on the other hand, is ready to face the technological challenges of the future and will without exaggeration form the shape of our games into the next decade.” The enfusion engine is cross platform and “enables the concurrent development of game for the PC, Xbox and Playstation.” It does point out that PC and Xbox gamers will have be able to enjoy full DirectX 12 support. The engine, developer tools, and user documentation will be released to the public soon, but no specific timeframe is given. They do not plan on licensing the engine to other developers for their own games at this time.

* Dying Light 2’s system requirements have been released, and you better have a beefy system for Ray Tracing, I tell you what. Just to get 1080p, 30fps with Raytracing you will need a Intel Core i5-8600k or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X CPU, 16GB system RAM, NVIDIA RTX 2070 8GB graphics card, which btw is roughly around $1000 depending on where you find it for sale. To bump that up to 60 fps and still maintain raytracing and 1080p you will need an Intel i5-8600k or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X CPU, and a Nvidia RTX 3080 10GB, and as far as I can tell, is nearly impossible to find. As far as playing this without raytracing, the requirements are slightly less demanding. At low quality settings you will need an Intel Core i3-9100 or AMD Ryzen 3 2300X cpu, 8GN of system RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti or AMD RX 560 4GB graphics card, and surprisingly at this lower setting you can run Dying Light 2 on Windows 7. For recommended settings with Ray-Tracing off at 60 FPS you will need an Intel Core i5-8600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X cpu, and NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB or AMD RX Vega 56 8GB graphics card, 16gb of system RAM, and you will need Windows 10 to run at these settings. The install size will be 60GB.

* Karim Lahcene with GameReactor is reports on newly published patents filed by Nintendo that shed a little light on some of the game mechanics seen in the sequel to Breath of the Wild’s E3 trailer this year. The first mechanic shown off is the ability for Link to basically move through objects that are above him, like was shown in the trailer where link phased through an overhanging cliff and to the top of it. The patent describes the specific conditions required for this to work. The second patent filed by Nintendo describes another action by Link where he is able to have the power to “rewind” objects and any path the had taken.  This patent explains how Link will be able to send objects back to certain positions based on their recorded path’s based on the time an instruction is given.

* Behaviour Interactive have announced in a blog post that Ringu will be coming to Dead by Daylight in a new chapter in March of 2022. The new chapter is inspired by Koji Suzuki’s novel and original film adaption by Video Nakata. If you aren’t familiar with Ringu, you might be familiar with The 2002 North American adaptation, The Ring. This announcement describes Ringu’s story as, “A video that, upon viewing, promises death in seven days. A disturbing fate, worsened by the contorted faces of the victims.” In the short announcement trailer a creepy foggy forest area was shown and at the end a well, the same kind seen in the movies and book.

* A mini-expansion, Kaycee’s mod, for Inscryption is in Beta now. The developer of the game posted on Steam, “I have received countless requests for an endlessly playable version of Part 1 that emphasizes Leshy’s deck-building rogue-like as a standalone experience. That’s what Kaycee’s Mod is, and a little more.” A more lengthy description describes it as such, Kaycee’s Mod is a free mini-expansion for Inscryption that hacks Leshy’s Cabin into an endless, and increasingly challenging, rogue-like. Apply different skulls to your run to ascend the Challenge Levels. Reaching new levels unlocks new cards, challenges, and dev logs inscribed by the late Kaycee Hobbes as she uncovered the secrets on the disk. To play the mini-expansion beta right-click Inscryption in Steam, then select Properties. Find the beta tab and enter the code “givemeascensionmode”, then once you’re in the beta build use the shortcut Shift+K+M on the start screen to unlock Kaycee’s Mod.

* The original actors from the first Alan Wake will be returning to Alan Wake 2. Sam Lake, writer and Creative Director for Remedy Games, said this, “A couple of easy clarifications before we go dark to continue the work. Yes, this is a 3rd person game. Yes, both Ilkka Villi and Matthew Porretta return in the role of Alan Wake.” Alan Wake 2 was announced at the game awards and expected to be a survivor horror game that will depart from the original title in many different ways as far as gameplay is concerned. * In a completely unexpected and blockbuster announcement Sony has not only announced new colors for the DualSense controller but also new colors for custom side plates for your Playstation 5. The new colors for the DualSense controller are Nova Pink, Starlight Blue, and Galactic Purple. This is in addition to Cosmic Red and Midnight Black controllers. The console covers will come in these same colors. The new DualSense controller colors will be available starting in January of 2022, and the Midnight Black and Cosmic Red PS5 console covers will be available at the same time. Though the post notes that the Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, and Starlight Blue console covers will be available sometime in the first half of 2022. From what I’ve seen it is super easy to change the console covers on your PS5, which I think is cool. What I don’t think is so great is that these console covers will cost $60 US dollars. Yikes. The DualSense controllers in Black and White will be $69.99 while the Cosmic Red, Starlight Blue, Nova Pink, and Galactic Purple will all be $74.99. I’d suspect the price increase is due to the colors coming from outer space.

* In a Xbox Wire blog post, it was revealed that one of the partner studios that helped to bring The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience tech demo to life was the studio behind the Gears series, The Coalition. The Coalition helped to refine and optimize the vision of the demo Epic created. Kate Rayner, Studio Technical Director at The Coalition said, ““We worked with Epic on the initial Unreal Engine 4 support for Xbox Series X when the new console was revealed back in March 2020,” and added, “We later shipped a native update to Gears 5 on Xbox Series X|S that added visual enhancements like SSGI, increased material & texture details, and pushed our 4k real-time cinematics to 60fps, all while boosting Multiplayer to support a 120FPS performance mode. Through this we learned how to optimize for that hardware to push visual and performance.” Pertaining to The Matrix Awakens The Coalition worked on memory and performance optimizations for the Xbox Series X|S. They worked with Epic to ensure the assets in the demo were set up to leverage virtual texture streaming. They also tuned the internal memory systems. It’s noted in this post that this internal memory systems tuning was especially focus on the less powerful Xbox Series S console. Overall The Coalition helped to optimize the performance of the Series X and S.

* 343 Industries have announced in a Reddit post on r/halo that four new playlists are ready for the update tomorrow, Tuesday, December 14th. This includes the Slayer playlist. The included playlist will be Slayer, Fiesta, FFA, and Tactical Slayer (SWAT). They are calling the update a “services” update. Ske7ch343 with 343 Industries said this on the reddit post, “As I noted last week, the team’s original plans for a Slayer playlist included a variety of new variants that weren’t going to be ready in time to deploy before the holiday break. To address player feedback for Slayer in the near term, we’ll be releasing a basic Slayer offering to start and will look to bolster and expand with more variants in a future update.” Tomorrow’s update will also include adjustments to challenges, including removing mode-specific challenges, reducing some requirements for others, making the weekly ultimate challenge a little easier, and adding brand new challenges based on the playlists. The post stated they will have more information sometime this week on the Halo Waypoint blog. Lastly Ske7ch343 stated, “Lastly, on a semi-related note – please know that the team is aware of and actively investigating reports of intermittent hiccups affecting some players in BTB over the last few days. * In more Halo Infinite news it looks like there is a glitch that is corrupting player’s save files and making them unplayable. Rory Young with Game Rant reports that though it is a rare occurrence there is a glitch that they want Halo Infinite players to be aware of, and they let us know how to avoid it. So apparently the game is prompting people to log in to their Xbox when they are already logged in, though when the player does try to log in this second time it completely trashes their save file not allowing them to continue their game they’ve put a potential number of hours in and causing the player to have to start a new campaign. The cause to this second login request seem to be plugging in new inputs, peripherals, or swapping between your PC and Xbox with your save file. Also having the game resume from suspend mode when you’ve got multiple accounts on the same system. Also reconnecting a controller or connecting a second controller can cause this. So moral of the story? If the game ever requests you login to your system again do not do it. The best thing to do is close the game the restart it.

* Masayuki Uemura, the engineer credited with the creation of the NES and SNES has passed away. Damien McFerran with Nintendolife reports that he passed away at the age of 78 on December 6th. In 1972 Uemura started work with Nintendo as an engineer and the Famicom, (known as the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, in the west), was his creation. He had worked with Sharp before joining Nintendo. This was a time when Nintendo, a toy company as the time, was considering entering the video game industry. Hiroshi Yamaichi, the Nintendo President at the time, wanted a video game system for home use that was capable of playing arcade games on a tv, with games on cartridges.

* Brian Jarrard, community manager at 343 Industries, tweeted out about a known bug in Halo Infinite Campaign that, if you are offline, or disconnected from services, which he notes can occur after quick resume, the cosmetics won’t show up in your multi-player inventory. He states that 343 is aware of the bug and will eventually have a retroactive fix, and says “you will get the cosmetics you’ve earned”, in regards to whether or not the lost items will be lost forever. He does not recommend continuing a Quick resume session, also he recommends making sure you are online before going back into the game.

It was only stated as coming in early 2022, but the International Ice Hockey Federation women’s national teams and the IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship will be added to NHL 22, which will bring Team USA’s and Canada’s stars playable, among other teams. Sean Ramjagsingh, vide president of EA Sports said this, “”The introduction of women’s national teams to NHL 22 as part of the upcoming IIHF content will be an important moment for the franchise in its continued effort to reflect the diversity of the hockey community.” Hey EA, welcome to the 21st Century.

* Star Wars: The Old Republic – Legacy of the Sith expansion had been delayed to February 15th 2022. Keith Kanneg, Project Director, said in his announcement that “…as we get ever closer to launch, it is clear that we need a bit more time. We’re focusing additional testing on the many areas we have changed throughout the game to deliver the experience we want, and one that you deserve.” He also stated that the feedback received during the public test servers was “invaluable in helping us shape this expansion.” As well besides the story content, “to avoid spoilers”, the majority of the expansion and its features will be returning to the public test servers for all subscribers this week.

* Sony has released the top downloads on the Playstation Store for the month of November, and no surprise Call of Duty: Vanguard topped almost all the charts. The top five games for the PS5 in November for the US/Canada were COD: Vanguard, Battlefield 2042, GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, NBA 2k22, and Marvel’s Spider Man: Miles Morales. In the EU markets the only difference for the PS5 was the number 4 spot, which instead of NBA2K22, FIFA ’22 sat in that spot. For the PS4 things were a bit different, though not by much. In the US and Canada COD and Battlefield took the top two spots for downloads, while NBA 2K22 took the third spot, Madden NFL 22 took the 4th, and Grand Theft Auto 5 took 5th. For the PS4’s EU Playstation downloads COD took the number one spot, but FIFA 22 managed to take the second spot. Battlefield came in at three, GTA 5 at four and Farming Simulator came in at five. What surprises me for the PS4 numbers GTA 5 is still selling this well?!?

* One of this year’s big The Game Award announcements could be a Sonic game. This according to Chris Scullion with VGC. A user on Twitter asked Geoff Keighley, (The Game Awards creator and announcer), if he was a fan of Sonic, and he replied with “very much so,” and the eyes emote with a sideways glance, as if there was something to this response. The official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account tweeted out a few hours later, “Hey @geoffkeighley do you have any extra invites to TGA?” VGC pointed out that a new sub-domain has been registered under the official Sonic the Hedgehog website at frontiers.sonicthehedgegog.com. Sonic Frontiers is suspected to be related to the Sonic game the team briefly teased back in a direct they had in May of this year.

* Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection gets a release date. The game will be released on January 28th 2022 for the Playstation 5 and for the first time in the series will be coming to the PC. Though the PC release has yet to get a release date, and all the post by Sony said was, “stay tuned for more details from us on specs and the upcoming release date.” The Legacy of Thieves Collection will have some pretty significant graphical upgrades for the PS5. Some of the new graphical settings available for the game will be Fidelity Mode, which will allow people with 4k displays to play the game in 4k. Performance mode will target 60 frames per second, and Performance+ mode will target 120 frames per second at 1080p resolution. Though the 120 frames per second will require a 120hz display. Load times will be near instant on the PS5. Spatial 3D audio will also be available. And of course the game will take advantage of the DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback system. The game will be available physically and digitally for $49.99. You can pre-order it digitally now. A little bonus for current owners of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, or Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End & Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Digital Bundle will have the option to pay $10 to upgrade to Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Digital Version. That upgrade will be available on January 28th, 2022, the day the game launches. One very big downside to this though is owners of PS4 disc copies must insert them into the PS5 every time they want to download or play the PS5 digital versions. PS4 game disc owners who buy the PS5 Digital Edition disc-free console will not be able to get the PS5 version for the discounted price.

* The official Unreal Engine website has a new page for the recently leaked Matrix Awakens. The first thing you see on the page is the text ‘The Game Awards’ and a date of December 9th, 2021 with a countdown. The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is the official title of the project and will be available for free on the Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5. No mention of availability on current gen consoles, and no mention of exactly what this ‘Experience’ will entail. You can now pre-download the game for the Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5 consoles. * Age of Empires 4 patch 9369, due out this week, has been previewed in a blog post by the developer. Part of the release notes indicates that the Springald units have been nerfed based on player feedback. Before this update the Springald were considered a generalist, effective against most units, now it will be strong exclusively against siege units. Specifically the bonus damage vs Siege units has gone from 20 to 90, while the base damage of the Springald has gone down from 60 to 30, and the move speed decreased from 4 to 3.75. In addition to the nerf of the Springald units, there have been fixes for a few exploits, including deleting a building with the Court Architects tech no longer returns additional resources, combining the French Keep Influence and unit generation will no longer result in a refund of additional resources, deleting or having Rus Hunting Cabin building destroyed will no longer result in increased Gold generation, and deleting an intersection of Stone Wall no longer returns additional stone. * Fans of Dragon Age that are looking forward to more information on the next game in the series will have to wait a little longer. Though there was some chatter that Dragon Age 4 might be shown in some form at the Game Awards, Bioware has clarified in a blog post that they will not be showing anything new off with the game until next year, though no specific date was given. They also let it be known that the next Dragon Age would be a “single-player-focused experience.”

* Vikki Blake with Eurogamer is reporting, via The Gamer website, that Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl will take up 180GB on your Xbox console. Eurogamer points out the game will occupy half the space of the Xbox Series S hard drive. The pc version is reportedly going to be around 150GB. The game is scheduled for release on April 28th 2022 for the Xbox Series X|S consoles and pc, though it will be available via Xbox Game Pass on the Xbox One.
