Age of Empires 4 might be coming to the Xbox consoles, PlayStation releases their December PS Store numbers, Take Two has entered into an agree to purchase Zynga, and Dying Light 2 could take a lot of hours to complete, though the developer clarified yesterday that it won’t take so long to beat the main story.

* Among Us topped the PlayStation store’s December downloads. For both the PS5 and PS4 and in Europe and the US Among Us took the top spot, beating out titles like FIFA 22, Call of Duty: Vanguard, and PS5 favorite Spiderman Miles Morales.

* In not so surprising news Age of Empires 4 might be coming to an Xbox console near you. Jordan Middler with VGC reports that the game’s code name, “Cardinal” was spotted by Twitter user Alumia_Italia on the Insider Hub on the Xbox version of the platform. A port of the game has not been confirmed but with the success of Microsoft Flight Simulator coming to the Xbox Series X last year it wouldn’t be surprising to see it happen, though playing strategy games on a controller is a lot less enjoyable than flying a plane on a controller.

* Matt Purslow with IGN reports that Take Two has entered into an agreement to purchase mobile game developer Zynga for a staggering and record breaking 12.7 billion dollars. This would be an even bigger dollar amount than the previously record breaking amount that Microsoft paid for Zenimax, parent company of Bethesda, ID Software, MachineGames, among others. This is what Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two, had to say about the purchase, ““We are thrilled to announce our transformative transaction with Zynga, which significantly diversifies our business and establishes our leadership position in mobile, the fastest growing segment of the interactive entertainment industry,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two. “This strategic combination brings together our best-in-class console and PC franchises, with a market-leading, diversified mobile publishing platform that has a rich history of innovation and creativity.”

* If you haven’t heard already, Dying Light 2 will take at least 500 hours to fully complete. Adam Bankrupts with IGN reports that the main story will take roughly 70-80 hours to complete. This is what Techland said on the official Dying Light Twitter account, “To fully complete Dying Light 2 Stay Human, you’ll need at least 500 hours—almost as long as it would take to walk from Warsaw to Madrid!” In a Twitter post from yesterday to clarify how much time it will take to beat the game, they said it would take about 20 hours to complete the main story, 80 hours to finish the main story and all of the side quests, and about 500 hours to complete max out the game, which includes all main and side quests, choices and endings, checking every place on the map, every dialogue and finding every collectible. In comparison the original Dying Light takes roughly 17.5 hours to complete, 35 hours for main story and extras, and about 55 hours for a completionist run.

* Tom Ivan with VGC reports that The Last of US remake for the PS5 is allegedly due to release in the later half of this year. Tom Henderson is claiming this but VGC is corroborating information from its own sources. Tom Henderson said this in his tweet, “Heard from multiple people now that the TLOU remake is nearly finished and could release during the latter half of 2022,” he added in another tweet, “With TLOU2 MP and TLOU 2 directors cut – I’ve heard they are coming too – But I don’t know exactly when/how. Them all releasing together could be a good compromise if GOW got delayed to Q1 2023 – But that’s just speculation on my end for the moment,” then finally said, “But I think the overall goal here is to drum up hype for the HBO show, so we’ll see what happens…” The remake was supposedly being worked on by PlayStation’s Visual Arts Service Group but was taken over by Naughty Dog themselves.

* As reported by Eddie Makuch with Gamespot, BioWare’s wants to rebuild its reputation. In a blogpost Gary McKay says, “”Continuing to work under the pressure of a world pandemic has not been easy. We’ve had to adopt new tools, processes, and ways to communicate. We’re all balancing personal time and work, and each person is dealing with their own unique situation,” McKay added. “The biggest challenge continues to be the uncertainty of it all, which makes everyone’s life more difficult and makes it hard to plan for the future.” Blaming the pandemic is becoming a common refrain for developers struggling to get games out, and rightly so. Bioware is changing some of its workplace policies in the face of challenges related to covid, adopting a hybrid model where some employees work from the offices and some work remotely. As well prospective employees in North America have the option of working anywhere they want, whereas previously the company required employees to relocate to Austin, Texas, or Edmonton, Canada. Regarding the poster that was released by the developer on N7 day, a day to celebrate the Mass Effect series, the poster teased a few bits of information for the game, and this is what Gary McKay had to say about the poster, “”If you look closely, there are a handful of hidden treats; by my count, there are at least five surprises, all of which point to an amazing future in the Mass Effect universe.”

* Along with their reveal of more information on the next PlayStation VR headset, Sony introduced the first title to be announced for the device. It’s based in the Horizon franchise, and is called Horizon Call of the Mountain. In a video released alongside the announcement a short clip, presumably in game, was shown. In the clip the perspective is from the gamer’s, and is floating along a creek in a boat and looking up at a creature called a tall neck. You watch as the creature gets closer to you, then in a moment of suspense lifts its back foot over you and safely to the other side of the boat. I would imagine within a VR headset this scene would be much more impactful and frightening, as the possibility of getting squished by a building sized creature would feel terrifying. This is what Jan-Bart van Been, Studio Director and Studio Art & Animation Director for Guerrilla had to say about the game, “We don’t want to reveal too much just yet, but this story will be told through the eyes of an entirely new character. You will also meet Aloy, other familiar faces, and new characters along the way, and we’ll be introducing you to the protagonist of Horizon Call of the Mountain soon.”

* Ubisoft had a few Xbox related announcements yesterday, and one of them is the fact that Rainbow Six Extraction will be a day one release on Xbox Game Pass. This includes Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It will release January 20th. Rainbow Six Extraction is described as a tactical 1-3 player co-op PvE first person shooter. You can pre-order Rainbow Six Extraction on the Microsoft Store now or at your local video game shop. It was also note in the announcement that Rainbow Six Siege is available now on Xbox Game Pass, and will be available on PC Game Pass on January 20th. Rainbow Six Extraction standard edition will retail for $39.99 and the deluxe edition will retail for $49.99.

* Lets talk about new games coming for January and February. For January we will see the free to play version of PUBG: Batlegrounds to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia hitting on January 12th. God of War will be released for the PC on January 14th. Rainbow Six Extraction comes out PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, and Xbox One on January 20th. On January 28th Pokemon Legends: Arceus for the Switch and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection for the PS5 will be released. But the month that all gamers around the world are looking forward to and fearing for their free time is February. Dying Light 2 hits the PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, and Xbox One on February 4th to start the month off. Sifu will be out for the PC, PS4, and PS5 February 8th. Then February 18th Horizon Forbidden West will be out for the PS5 and PS4. Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will be out February 22nd. After leaving his Bioshock development he founded his current studio Ghost Story Games, which was actually a rebranding of the previous studio Irrational games, which is a subsidiary of Take Two Interactive. The current game has been in development for 8 years now. Jason Schreier said this in a tweet in regards to an article he wrote for Bloomberg, “Ken Levine is often lauded as a genius — the creator of BioShock — but many who have worked with him describe him as a difficult boss who struggles to communicate his vision. His process, which involves frequently discarding months worth of work, has led to burnout and strife.” He goes on to write in his article, “Levine is a flawed manager who often struggles to communicate his vision and alienates or browbeats subordinates who challenge him or fail to meet his expectations, say current and former employees, most of whom requested anonymity because they feared repercussions.”

* ConcernedApe, creator of Stardew Valley said progress on his new game, Haunted Chocolatier, is “coming along well,” according to an interview he did with vgkami.com. He also said, “I’m making everything from scratch because that’s how I made Stardew, and it worked out well. It’s what I know how to do. Also, I wanted the game to feel distinct, and have its own character.” When asked about the combat system for Haunted Chocolatier, “I’m well aware that the combat system in Stardew Valley feels like kind of an afterthought, so I wanted to challenge myself to make something more interesting and fun.” And he added, “The combat in both Stardew Valley and Haunted Chocolatier are based on long-standing traditions of 2D action RPG’s. * Remedy Entertainment has signed a global development deal with Tencent for a co-operative multiplayer game codenamed Vanguard. The game will be a free to play PvE shooter that “combines Remedy’s narrative expertise and action gameplay into an immersive multiplayer experience.” The game will be developed with the Unreal Engine for the PC and consoles. Remedy will develop and publish the game worldwide, except in selected Asian markets, where Tencent will localize and publish the game. The game is currently at the proof-of-concept stage and its budget is said to be in the range of a AAA game. The financing will be coming from both Remedy and Tencent. Tencent will have the worldwide rights to develop and publish a mobile version of the game, and they will cover the costs of doing so.

* William D’Angelo with VG Chartz reports that the Nintendo Switch has officially crossed the 100 million worldwide hardware sales threshold. For the week ending December 18th the Switch sold 1,314,674 units according to VG Chartz estimates. The Nintendo Switch is the seventh video game platform to cross the 100 million mark, which includes Playstation 1, 2, and 4, the Nintendo DS, Nintendo Game Boy, and Nintendo Wii.

* The Playstation 5 sold an estimated 541,290 units to bring its lifetime total to 16.68 million units.

* The Xbox Series X|S compared to the Xbox One for the same week are down by nearly 67,000 units.

* Naoki Yoshida, Producer of Final Fantasy 16 announces that due to the ongoing complications stemming from Covid that there will be no new updates for the game this year. This is what he said in a tweet, “As the latest addition to the FINAL FANTASY series being developed for the PlayStation 5, FINAL FANTASY XVI(16) has amassed a sizable team composed of talented creators from around the world. However, in an effort to offset the effects of COVID-19, we’ve had to decentralize that workforce by permitting staff to tackle their assignments from home. This has unfortunately hampered communication from the Tokyo office, which, in turn, has led to delays in-or in extreme cases, cancellations of asset deliveries from our outsource partners,” he continues, “That said, we have spent much of 2021 addressing this issue, and hope to see its impact to a minimum by the new year, allowing us to better focus on the tasks at hand: increasing graphic resource quality, refining combat mechanics, fleshing out individual battles, putting the finishing touches on cutscenes, and conducting overall graphical optimization. * Ed Nightingale with Eurogamer reports that Void Interactive has lost the Publisher to it’s SWAT tactical first person shooter Ready or Not. The publisher was going to be Team17. It’s speculated that the publisher pulled out due to the fact that the developer is going to include a school shooting level. In a reddit post a developer for Void Interactive responded to a question as to whether or not the game would feature such a school shooting level and they responded with, “You better believe it’s gonna.” Ready or Not was released on the Steam Store in early access on December 17th of this year. No statement has been released as to why the publisher pulled out. In a tweet Void Interactive said this, “VOID Interactive and Team17 have mutually agreed that Team17 will no longer publish Ready or Not. We are confident that this is the right path for the future of  Ready or Not, and we thank Team17 for their partnership and wish them great success with their spectrum of games!” As well in a response to a question on Twitter about more details of why the split happen this is what Void had to say, “Unfortunately we cannot say much more about the split but we are confident that this move is the best for both parties and will allow us to continue to produce and update Ready or Not on Steam Early Access.”

Via an interview with Twitch Streamer The Real Brandolorian, Kim Salzer, EA’s director of marking from 2000-2003 said this when asked about a game that was never released, “A big one for me, because I was so personally involved in it, and it’s such a huge IP that has lived on is an online massively multiplayer game for Harry Potter,” she said. “We did all the research, we had the beta built out, it was a combination offline/online experience where we’d actually mail stuff to the kids, like prizes and ribbons and stuff like that,” she continues, “Thoroughly researched, very confident in the success of this. But it was killed, for lack of a better term, because EA was going through changes at that time and they just didn’t know or believe enough that that IP would have a shelf-life longer than a year or two.” At the time EA held the video game rights to Harry Potter, but Warner Bros now owns those rights.

* This is sorta a few days old as far as news but it’s something that’s catching some traction so I decided to talk about it. Final Fantasy 7 Remake just came out for the PC and it has some pretty significant problems. Adam Bankhurst over at IGN did a good write up. To start off PC Gamer reported that the Graphics Settings menu is bare and offers, as PC Gamer said, “no variable framerate option, no way to tweak anti-aliasing, toggle Sync, or control effects like motion blur.” Performance wise Digital Foundry noticed frame drops, stutters, and just general instability. Using an NVIDIA RTX 3090 and Intel 10900K at 1080p, Digital Foundry’s John Linneman said the game is “a mess” and “the smooth presentation was central to the game’s story telling and this version compromises it.” What’s even more disappointing is this game’s abysmal price point. At $70 with these performance issues, (indicating that the developer possibly just didn’t put as much care in this version), I’d have to say for the time being Final Fantasy 7 Remake for the PC is not a recommended buy right now.

* So that pirate game that Rare developed for the Xbox that I couldn’t remember the title of is getting an event soon. Sea of Thieves’s event is called Grogmanay, and Mark Delaney with Gamespot reports it will be starting December 27th at 2AM PT/5AM ET and ends at the same time on January 11th. You will need to complete six challenges to earn all four events rewards. When you attempt to complete the six challenges you will be required to be drunk…doesn’t that sound like fun? Well the six challenges include you drinking three tankards of grog and then attempt to complete something while you’re drunk. These include A Staggering Success where you get drunk,  then you dig up a chest while drunk, Dropping the Ball where you attempt to hit an enemy ship with a cannonball, Drowned Sorrows, where you defeat Ocean Crawlers, Sick Burn where you have to defeat skeletons using firebombs, Dinner and Drinks where you have to capture a pig, chicken, and snake, and then the final challenge has you defeat a shark while still drunk. The rewards include the Bilge Rat Celebration tattoo for one complete challenge, the Bilge rat celebration makeup for two completed, Grogmanay Annual tankard, for four completed, and the celebration celebrity title for all six challenges completed.
