Did you know that we are 99.9% identical! Across all of humanity there is only .1% difference in the DNA of any two people! This is even closer in familial ties. That is why we can often see the similarities in a father and a son or a mother and a daughter.

The same is true of God the Father and God the Son. Exodus says of God’s attributes that he is “merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth…”

When we look at Jesus, there is no doubt that there are attributes of His life that belong only to God.  For example, Christ is all-powerful, omniscient, eternal, He never changes, and is perfectly holy. These are all attributes that only God has.

Just as our lives reflect our familial ties, the attributes of God are seen in the life of Jesus because He is God.

The overriding message of the Old Testament is simple: There is One God, worship only Him.

Throughout history, man has a tendency to erect idols in his life. While many of us would not have a wooden statue that we bow down to, we none the less allow the idol of sports or money to interfere with our faithfulness to God.

Samuel told Israel, “prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only…”

God alone deserves our worship. We can’t just have a little Jesus and be ok because Jesus warned that we cannot serve God and mammon. We have to make a choice as to whom we will serve.

As a child of God, I have made the Joshua commitment, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Who will you serve?

In a moment of desperation, a group of friends brought a man sick of the palsy to Jesus. Instead of healing his palsy right away, Jesus declared: “Thy sins be forgiven thee.”

On hearing this, the Scribes retorted with, “Only God can forgive sins!”

We can agree with this truth because Isaiah says, “...I am he that blotteth out thy transgressions...and will not remember thy sins.”

David Garland said, “If God alone forgives sins and God alone heals diseases, … then Jesus is the incarnation of the words ... ‘I am the Lord, that healeth thee.’”

If we are to ever know the hope of eternal life, we need to know that Christ has forgiven us. J. Vernon McGee said, “We need forgiveness of our sins and He does forgive...because Christ paid the penalty for our sins!”

God was once approached by a scientist who said, “Listen, God, we’ve decided we don’t need you anymore. These days we can do all sorts of things that used to be considered miraculous.”

God replied, “Well, how about we put your theory to the test. Why don’t we have a competition to see who can make a human being, just like I did it.”

“Fine,” says the scientist as he bends down to scoop up a handful of dirt.

But God stopped him by saying, “Not so fast. You get your own dirt.”

When we worship Jesus Christ, we are worshipping the Lord of Creation. Colossians says, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible…” 

The original creation is an act only God is able to perform, which gives us confidence in the deity of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Has anyone ever told you, “The Bible never says that Jesus is God”? This false assertion is not based on the Bible, but on bias.

The Old Testament says of Jesus, “For unto us a child is born…And His name shall be called...The mighty God.”

When Thomas doubted the disciples’ testimony of seeing the resurrected Jesus, Christ made a point to see to him, and Thomas exclaimed,“My Lord and my God.”  

Jesus did not rebuke Thomas; rather, Christ’s own testimony was, “...Before Abraham was, I am.” This statement tied Him to the Great I AM that met with Moses at the burning bush.

I remind you that when we are worshipping Jesus, we are worshipping God. He is coequal and coeternal with God the Father. Don’t be ashamed to let your life to point others to Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Who is Jesus? This was the very question that Christ asked of Peter. “But whom say Ye that I am?”

There are many ideas about who Jesus is. Some say he was a teacher, a moral man, or a miracle worker or even a prophet. But Christ is more than all of these because Jesus is the Lord!

Peter’s response was two fold He said, “Thou art the Christ” - The term “the Christ” meant the Messiah, the anointed of God. Peter showed his faith that Jesus was the long expected Messiah that would take away the sins of the world.

Then He stated, “The son of the Living God.” He expressed full belief that He was deity. Essentially he said, “Jesus you are Lord!”

Yet, the important question is not what did Peter say, but what do you say? Peter gave the right answer but what is your response to Christ’s question?

Has anyone ever said, “You look like your father!” When we look at children, it is easy to see the similarities in the facial features or body type that they have with their parents.

The same is true of our life in relation to our Heavenly Father. Genesis says man was created in the image of God, after His likeness.

Mentally, we were created with intelligence and rationale. We have the ability to reason and choose.

Socially, we were created with a need for interaction and fellowship.

Morally, we were created with responsibility to live according to right and wrong.

Spiritually, we were created with a spirit that will live forever even after our bodies die.

God is indeed greater than our minds can comprehend. And yet, He made us in His image and for a relationship with Him.

The Bible reveals in the Old Testament that there is one God, but in the New Testament, we see that this One God is revealed as a Triune God, the three in one.

1 John 5:7 says, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

The Lord exists simultaneously in three persons. Each is coequal, co-powerful, and coeternal.

This hypostatic union matters because Jesus, like the Father was present in eternity past as God. So as God, he alone was worthy to die the substitutionary death for sins. The Holy Spirit, which indwells believers today, is also God, which means we have God’s very presence with us at all times.

Today, rest assured that the Lord has never changed and we are encouraged by His faithfulness in our life each day.

The Bible clearly teaches that there is only one God.

Isaiah said, “I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me…”

Ephesians says, “One God, and Father of all, who is above all, and through all and in you all.”

This basic truth is essential for us to understand because the implications are far reaching. Over the millennia, man has worshiped anything and everything. From the dolphins in the sea, to the idols made from wood and stone. The natural man rejects the True God.

Why? When there is only One True God, then we cannot be our own god. We were created. And so, we are responsible to The Creator. Hebrews says, “As it is appointed unto man once to die, after this the judgment.” Make sure your life is ready to stand before the One True God.

William Phelps taught English literature at Yale for 41 years until his retirement in 1933. While proofing an examination paper, he came across this note: “God only knows the answer to this question.”

Phelps returned the paper with this note, “God gets an A, you get an F”

There may be things you struggle to understand, but God has worked throughout human history to reveal Himself to us.

1 Timothy says, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into Glory.”

Although it seemed a mystery as to how God would offer forgiveness of sins in the Old Testament, Christ’s coming revealed the mystery of forgiveness of sins and hope for man.
