Why does God's blessing so often lead a nation away from Him instead of closer to Him? In today's Daily Hope, Pastor John S. Dickerson unpacks Nehemiah chapter 9, where the people of Israel gather to confess how they took God's blessing, prosperity, and freedom, and slowly drifted into complacency, idolatry, and judgment.
Pastor John calls this the blessing judgment cycle: God blesses His people, blessing leads to prosperity, prosperity leads to complacency, and complacency leads to idolatry, worshiping money, sexuality, or self instead of God. He traces this same pattern through America's history, from the literacy and freedom this nation has enjoyed to the ways it has since turned from God's Word.
The encouraging news is that revival always starts in the hearts of God's people. We can't control a nation, but we can return our own hearts to Him, repent, and ask Him to begin the next great awakening in us.
