In many COVID hot spots, a pattern: High concentrations of white evangelicals

As COVID-19 cases surge again, two things are true about many counties considered hot spots: Vaccination rates are low and white evangelical Protestant populations are high, according to a new data analysis.

Concern about vaccine hesitancy or outright anti-vaccine sentiment among white evangelicals has persisted since at least March, when, according to a poll from Pew Research Center, those who said they were Christian and born-again were far more likely than any other religious group to say they definitely or probably would not get a vaccine.

A full 45% of white evangelicals fit this description. The next-closest religious classification (Americans who list their religious affiliation as “nothing in particular”) was a full 9 points lower at 36%, which was also the national average.

Russell Moore, a former Southern Baptist Convention official, told Religion News Service: “Evangelical Christians should be leading the way in thanking God for the cure we spent a year praying for. The least we can do is get our shots so that we can carry on our mission in our communities, without fear of getting anyone sick. Our gospel witness should be contagious; we shouldn’t be.”

Moore (also) told RNS he has spoken with evangelical doctors “discouraged to the point of exhaustion by the low rates of vaccination among sectors of our fellow Christians,” despite pleading for people to get vaccinated.

Government-Funded Researchers Sought Aborted Minorities for Organ Harvesting

The federal government gave at least $2.7 million in taxpayer money to researchers who sought out minority babies who had been aborted in order to harvest their organs, according to internal documents released Tuesday.

The University of Pittsburgh targeted minorities in its request for infant organs—including those taken from full-term babies—to create a "pipeline" for fetal research. Researchers said they needed 50 percent of the donated fetuses to be minorities and specified that 25 percent must come from black women. The Pittsburgh metropolitan area is 85 percent white and 8 percent black. Researchers stressed the importance of maintaining organ blood flow in the request, which watchdogs say could violate federal law by asking doctors to illegally preserve organs during labor-inducing abortions.

The National Institutes of Health has overseen experiments on fetal organs at the University of Pittsburgh since 2015 in what the school claimed to be a "tissue hub." Aborted babies used in this research ranged from 6 to 42 weeks of gestation, according to government documents. The grant request from the university to the government agency redacts key information, including how many fetuses were obtained and who provided them. Its language, however, raised troubling questions.

David Daleiden, founder and president of the pro-life Center for Medical Progress, called on the federal government to investigate the NIH and Pitt after obtaining more than 300 pages of information related to the program through a public records request.

The University of Pittsburgh has been involved in fetal organ research for more than a decade. It conducted an experiment in 2020 that implanted the scalps of aborted fetuses onto lab mice in a study that was funded by Dr. Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The grant proposal boasts of the institution's experience handling a variety of fetal organs, including the liver, heart, legs, brain, kidneys, and bladders. The university outlined its goal of becoming a "pipeline" for fetal organ research, which would mean not only conducting this research but providing organs for other institutions to experiment on.

The NIH did not respond to a request for comment.

On Twitter, Nate Fischer shared this story but also pointed out the fact that Francis Collins ran the NIH during this time. Fischer: “He was widely celebrated as an example of sort of “faithful presence” so many educated and successful Christians have been told to aspire to. I’m sure @NIHDirector is a thoughtful Christian, personally opposed this, wouldn’t choose to do it in a perfect world, is wrestling with the challenges of Christian leadership in an elite secular institution, etc. But the fact is the NIH funded a project that actively sought aborted fetuses to perform research on under Collins’s leadership. That Collins did not stop this highlights the impotence cultivated by the “faithful presence” approach promoted in so many elite-adjacent evangelical circles. Here, the result was actually grimmer than simple failure to achieve impact: as head of the NIH, Collins played a role in funding this research. Through a career celebrated as a shining example of ‘faithful presence’ he became an active participant in a grotesque evil. If Christians aren’t going to develop doctrines that actually prepare them to fight against evils in the institutions they help lead, perhaps it’s better – for the sake of their souls – that they don’t even venture into these institutions.”

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Monday said he would make Covid-19 vaccination mandatory for U.S. service members by mid-September, an effort by the Biden administration to battle back the highly contagious Delta variant sweeping through unvaccinated communities across the country.

In a letter to the U.S. military, the Defense Secretary said he would seek a presidential waiver of a requirement that vaccines mandated by the Pentagon have the full approval of the Food and Drug Administration, unless the agency grants that approval first. President Biden, in a separate statement, expressed his “strong support for the move.”

After a spring and early summer in which mass vaccinations appeared to curb Covid-19’s spread and ease the caseload and rate of hospitalization and death, the Delta variant has torn through the country, particularly in areas with low rates of vaccination.

In Florida, for instance, a steep rise in cases since late June has pushed Covid-19 hospitalizations to new records. Coronavirus patients now fill at least 43% of Florida’s adult intensive-care beds.

“We’re seeing an uptick in cases, uptick in hospitalizations across the force, as we are in the country, and the Delta variant is a factor in that,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky today signed an order determining the evictions of tenants for failure to make rent or housing payments could be detrimental to public health control measures to slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This order will expire on October 3, 2021 and applies in United States counties experiencing substantial and high levels of community transmission levels of SARS-CoV-2.

The eviction moratorium allows additional time for rent relief to reach renters and to further increase vaccination rates. In the context of a pandemic, eviction moratoria—like quarantine, isolation, and social distancing—can be an effective public health measure utilized to prevent the spread of communicable disease. Eviction moratoria facilitate self-isolation and self-quarantine by people who become ill or who are at risk of transmitting COVID-19 by keeping people out of congregate settings and in their own homes.

It is imperative that public health authorities act quickly to mitigate such an increase of evictions, which could increase the likelihood of new spikes in SARS-CoV-2 transmission.  Such mass evictions and the attendant public health consequences would be very difficult to reverse.

Buried in the massive proposal—which is already longer than 2,700 pages—is a section titled, "ADVANCED IMPAIRED DRIVING TECHNOLOGY," which mandates new vehicles include "a system that … passively and accurately detect[s] whether the blood alcohol concentration of a driver of a motor vehicle is equal to or greater than the blood alcohol concentration" of .08, in which case the system would "prevent or limit motor vehicle operation." Automobile manufacturers would have a three-year grace period to comply with the regulation.

According to Chris Cuomo over at CNN...kidding CNBC:

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women and then retaliated against a former employee who complained publicly about his conduct, according to a bombshell report released Tuesday by state Attorney General Letitia James.

The monthslong probe concluded that Cuomo “sexually harassed multiple women and in doing so violated federal and state law,” James said at a press conference. Her office noted, however, that there were no specific penalties tied to the report.

The 165-page report, which comprises interviews with 179 witnesses and a review of tens of thousands of documents, also said that Cuomo’s office was riddled with fear and intimidation and was a hostile work environment for many staffers.

Cuomo harassed members of his own staff, members of the public and other state employees, one of whom was a state trooper on his protective detail, the report alleges. He engaged in nonconsensual touching, groping, kissing and hugging, and made inappropriate comments toward numerous women, according to the report.

Mariann Wang, a lawyer for two accusers, Alyssa McGrath and Virginia Limmiatis, said in a statement, “Cuomo’s misogyny and abuse cannot be denied.”

“He has been doing this for years, without any repercussions. He should not be in charge of our government and should not be in any position of power over anyone else,” Wang’s statement said. 

Debra Katz, an attorney for former Cuomo aide Charlotte Bennett, echoed Wang, saying Cuomo and other complicit staff “must resign immediately.”

“If he does not, the New York State Assembly must accept the Attorney General’s findings and begin taking the appropriate steps to remove him from office,” Katz said in a statement.”
