UN report says Myanmar military should face genocide charges

A UN report says Myanmar’s top military brass should be prosecuted for crimes that were genocidal in intent.

The report follows the mass killings, rape and abuse of Myanmar's Muslim-minority Rohingya, prompting some 700,000 to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh since last August.

The UN investigation said the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi was effectively complicit in the military's crime by doing nothing.

Vatican official calls on Pope Francis to resign

More shocks have jolted the Roman Catholic church with a top Vatican official calling on Pope Francis to resign.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano accused Francis, along with current and past church officials, of knowing about, and covering up for years the sexual abuse of children under its pastoral care in the US.

The Pope has dismissed the accusations and said he will not comment on them.

Head of Daesh in Afghanistan reported killed

The head of Daesh in Afghanistan, Abu Saad Erhabi, was killed in a strike on the group on Saturday night, Afghan authorities said.

The raid by Afghan and US forces also killed ten other members of the terrorist group.

Daesh has not commented on Erhabi’s death which would be the fourth Daesh leader in Afghanistan to be killed since July 2017.

Florida shooting

A video game tournament in the US state of Florida turned bloody after a gamer shot dead two people before killing himself.

Police say the shooter was David Katz from Baltimore.

Eleven others were wounded.

It's unclear why he did it, but US media say the 24-year-old white male was losing at the tournament, which was being streamed live on Twitch at the time of the shooting spree.

John McCain loses battle to brain cancer

And finally,

US Senator John McCain lost his battle to brain cancer on Saturday.

The 81-year-old Republican was formerly a Navy pilot who spent time in a POW camp in Hanoi after he was shot down during the US war against Vietnam.

He was also an anomaly within his own party, defying the current administration, and making up his own mind about what was right and wrong.

Conflicting reports over strike in Yemen

In Yemen, there are conflicting reports about an alleged air strike on Thursday.

Houthi rebels say a strike by the Saudi-led coalition killed at least nine people in a district near Hudeida which the coalition is attempting to take back from the Iran-aligned rebels.

The coalition denied the attack and said the deaths were from a Houthi ballistic missile the rebels fired in the area.

Trump muses about impeachment

It's been a tough week for US President Donald Trump with two top former allies looking at jail time.

But is he already talking about his legacy?

On Thursday he went on his favourite show, 'Fox and Friends', and said he thinks the markets would crash if he was impeached.

"I think everybody would be very poor," Trump said. He added, "I don't know how you can impeach somebody who's done a great job."

Finland hosts air guitar world championship

Ibrahim Kalin said Turkey has rule of law, and that the case of Andrew Brunson is a legal issue.

Kalin was responding to comments Trump adviser John Bolton made, saying Ankara had made quote "a big mistake" in not releasing Brunson.

Brunson is on trial in Turkey on terror-related charges.

Australia's prime minister is under pressure

Australia's prime minister is refusing to resign - but Malcolm Turnbull says, if his party calls for a second leadership challenge on Friday, he won't contest it.

Turnbull survived a challenge on Tuesday. But now key allies have since jumped ship, and called for a second ballot.

Sweden launches first manual in feminist foreign policy

Sweden is launching the world's first manual for a feminist foreign policy.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton says the US-Turkey crisis could end "instantly" if an American pastor under house arrest and facing terror-related charges is released.

Andrew Brunson was detained over his alleged links to the PKK and FETO. He is currently under house arrest.

Ankara says it will continue to fight the US attacks on its economy triggered by the Brunson issue.

Trump adviser Bolton says Russia "stuck" in Syria, Iran must leave

Bolton also weighed in on Syria, saying Russia is "stuck" in Syria and looking for others to fund its post-war reconstruction.

Trump's national security adviser said the US had no understanding with Russia over the possible fate of opposition-held Idlib in Syria, but that Washington wants Iran, which backs the regime, out of the country.

Facebook and Twitter uncovers new global misinformation operations

Facebook, Twitter and Google parent Alphabet say they've removed hundreds of accounts tied to Iranian actors.

Iran is accused of pushing its geopolitical agenda online through a network of fake news websites and fraudulent social media.

Facebook and Twitter meanwhile said they had also shut down hundreds of accounts with alleged links to the Russian government for what they said were inauthentic and manipulative behaviour.

The Taliban fired a pair of rockets toward the presidential palace in Kabul on Tuesday as the Afghan president was delivering his holiday message for Eid al Adha.

No injuries were reported.

The attack came two days after President Ashraf Ghani offered the Taliban a conditional three-month ceasefire, beginning with the Eid holiday.

The Taliban have so far rejected the offer.
