JIDDU KRISHNAMURTI: You ask me how I can understand poverty when I have not experienced it. The answer is simple. Since I am seeking neither physical nor mental security, it matters nothing to me whether I am given food by my friends, or work for it. It is of very little importance to me whether I travel or do not travel. If I am asked, I come; if I am not asked, it makes little difference to me. Because I AM RICH IN MYSELF (and I do not say this with conceit), because I do not seek security, I HAVE FEW PHYSICAL NEEDS. But if I were seeking physical comfort, I would emphasize the physical needs, I would emphasize poverty.

Let us look at this differently. Most of our quarrels throughout the world concern possession and non-possession; they are concerned with the acquisition of this and the protection of that. Now, why do we lay such emphasis on possession? We do it BECAUSE POSSESSION GIVES US POWER, PLEASURE, SATISFACTION; it gives us a certain assurance of individuality and affords us scope for our action, our ambition. We lay emphasis on possession because of what we derive from it.

But if we become rich in ourselves, then life will flow through us harmoniously; then possession or poverty will no longer be of great importance to us. BECAUSE WE LAY EMPHASIS ON POSSESSION, WE LOSE THE RICHNESS OF LIFE, whereas, if we were complete in ourselves, we should find out the intrinsic value of all things and live in the harmony of mind and heart.

Swami Niranjnji Maharaj: What is CHITTA (mind-stuff or consciousness)? That which considers something other than the ATMAN (Self) is CHITTA. Against this, one who knows thus that I am all this is a JNANI (wise person).

When it is spoken thus - it should be like this, it should not be like that - the CHITTA has been propped up. When this kind of thought does not arise, then you know it to be a state where the CHITTA is quiescent.

If thought arises, let it arise. It is MAYA (illusion) only. So, one should not be so gloomy as to why such and such inspiration rose in the mind, and how can the mind be pacified.

Like the heat of the fire (the heat of the fire is non-different from the fire), the CHITTA is not separate from the ATMAN. When the CHITTA is non-different from the ATMAN, then what is the fruit or culmination of what it does? Once the CHITTA is considered of the nature of ABHAVA (lack), our work is done; or if the CHITTA is known as CHAITANA (sentient) and of the nature of ATMAN (Self), then also our work is done - so, nothing has really happened.

But we do KALPANA (imagination) that the BRAHMAN is ACHALA (non-moving) and the CHITTA is CHAMCHALA (restless). Thus, knowing BRHMAN to be special is a construct of the thinking attributed to CHITTA...

J. KRISHNAMURTI: You have to recognize what you now are. However well educated you may be, you are only partly a true individual; the greater part of you is determined by the reaction to society; which you have created. You are but a cog in a tremendous machine which you call society, religion, politics, and as long as you are such a cog, your action is born of LIMITATION; it leads only to disharmony and conflict. It is your action that has resulted in our present chaos. But if you acted out of your own FULLNESS you would discover the true worth of society and the instinct causing your action; then your action would be harmonious, not a compromise.

First of all, then, you must become conscious of the false values which have been established through the centuries and to which you have become a slave; you must become conscious of values, to find out whether they are false or true, and this you must do for yourself. No one can do it for - and herein lies the GREATNESS AND GLORY OF MAN. Thus, by discovering the right value of standards, you liberate the mind from the false standards handed down through ages. But such liberation does not mean impetuous, instinctive action leading to chaos; it means action born of the full harmony of mind and heart.

The KALPITA (imagined) snake can leave no influence on the AKALPITA (unimagined) rope. Similarly, the imagined CHITTA (mind-stuff or consciousness) can leave no mark or cannot pollute the the AKALPITA (unimagined), NIRVIKALPA (unmodifiable) Atman (Self).

When Martial Law is in effect, if someone comes in front, he is shot without asking him any questions. Similarly, when JNANA (wisdom) dawns, when ATMA-DRSHTI (Self-vision) happens, understand that Martial Law is in effect. As soon as any VRTTI (modification in CHITTA) arises, without asking any questions, know it to be MITHYA (false) and of the nature of ABHAVA (lack). Knowing the VRTTI thus to be of the nature of SHUNYA (void) is akin to shooting and obliterating it. Then don't see if the VRTTI is SAJATIYA (of the nature of the Self) or VIJATIYA (of the nature of the non-Self). Both, being DRSHYA (observed), are ASAT (non-truths). If you think that this VRTTI is BRAHMAKARA-VRTTI (of the nature of BRAHMAN), then understand that Martial Law is not in effect.

But we start thinking that this VRTTI is of the nature of gain, and this VRTTI is of the nature of loss. Where there is gain or profit, where there is pleasure, we turn towards that. Then, you are no longer Atman, you become a BHOKTA (enjoying) JIVA (living-being).

IN ORDER TO SAFEGUARD SECURITY, YOU CREATE AUTHORITY.

There is no such thing as a technique for living, a technique for the realization of truth. The realization of truth comes only when there is completeness of action without effort.

The cessation of effort comes through the AWARENESS of hindrances - not when you try to conquer them. When you are fully conscious, fully AWARE in your heart and mind, when you are AWARE with your whole being, then through that AWARENESS you will be free from hindrances.

Everything that you have conquered has enslaved you. Only when you have understood an impediment with your whole being, only when you have really understood the illusion of security, you will no longer struggle against it. But if you are only intellectually conscious of hindrances, then you will continue to struggle against them.

Your conception of life is based on this principle. Your striving for spiritual achievement, spiritual growth, is the outcome of your desire for further securities, further aggrandizement, further glory, and hence this continual and ceaseless struggle. So I say, do not seek a way, a method. There is no method, no way to truth. Do not seek a way, but become AWARE of the impediments. AWARENESS is not merely intellectual. AWARENESS is both mental and emotional. AWARENESS IS COMPLETENESS OF ACTION. In that flame of AWARENESS, all your impediments fall away because you penetrate them. Then you can perceive directly, without choice, that which is true. Your action will then be born out of completeness, not out of the incompleteness of security. In that completeness, in that harmony of mind and heart, is the realization of the eternal.

I am the SAKSHI (witness) of all PRATITIES (appearances) - this witnessing is because of the CHITTA (mind-stuff or consciousness).

When the SAKSHYA (witnessed/observed) material is itself not there, where is the SAKSHI (observer)? The existence of the SAKSHI is because of the SAKSHYA material. When all this SAKSHYA is ASAT (non-truth), KALPANA (imagination), BHRANTI (misjudgement), ADHYASTA; then the SAKSHI also will not exist. Then, who will speak as to whatever exists?

Only be silent, only there is silence; only CHETANATA (sentience) exists. "Is," when it mixes with "Me," becomes "Am." When "Me" does not exist, only "Is" exists; then "Am" does not exist.

When you say, "I am Brahman," this statement is because of PARICHHINNATA (separateness); this separateness comes from CHITTA only. Otherwise, where is the "Me"? In which TATTVA (element) will you do AHAMKARA (egotism) and say "I am"? Only sitting in the body will you be able to speak thus, but the body is also PARICHHINNA (separate from the ATMAN or Self).

In SUSHUPTI (deep sleep), you are not able to say "I am Brahman," because there, there is no "Me," no "You," no "This," no "That"; there is no UPADHI (title), there is no DVAITA (duality). So, don't bring any PARICHHINNATA (separateness), UPADHI (title), SAMBANDHA (relationship) to vanquish the "I." Then, become pervasive like the AKASHA (space) and tell the meaning of "I"? You will not be able to talk about "Me" or "You."

Remove the boundary of the body and see - you will find there is nothing inside, nothing outside, nothing above, nothing below - there is no "Me," there is no "You," there is no "He" or "She." "ME" or "I" exists only when together with something or the other; otherwise by itself, there is no "Me," no "I"; there is only "Is."

Most of our conceptions of God, of reality, of truth, are merely speculative imitations. They are utterly false, and all our religions are based on such falsities. A man who has lived all his life in a prison can only speculate about freedom; a man who has never experienced the ecstasy of freedom cannot know freedom. So it is of little avail to discuss God, truth; but if you have the intelligence, the intensity to destroy the barriers around you, then you will know for yourself the fulfilment of life. You will then no longer be a slave in a social or religious system.

Also, there is the security through service. You like to lose yourself in the bog of activity, in work. Through this activity, this security, you seek to escape from facing your own incessant struggles.

So security is but escape. And since most people are trying to escape, they have made themselves into machines of habit in order to avoid conflict. They create religious beliefs, ideas; they worship the image of an imitation which they call God; they try to forget their inability to face the struggle by losing themselves in work. All these are ways of escape.

From JAGRAT (the waking state) to NIDRA (the sleep state), all Karma LILA (play) is by the CHITTA (the mind-stuff or consciousness). This CHITTA is the ADHYASTHA on the ATMAN(Self), the ATMAN being the ADHISTHANA. Whatever appears and however it appears, all that is the ATMAN. That ATMAN is AHAM (I or me), that ATMAN is BRAHMAN, and that ATMAN is verily this JAGAT (world). There is neither MANAS (mind) nor BUDDHI (intellect) nor CHITTA; there is only BRAHMAN.

There is a true life, an eternal something. But the moment in which we feel that are so rare that this eternal something recedes more and more into the background and seems to us less and less a reality. There is a reality; there is an eternal living reality - call it God, immortality, eternity, or what you will. There is something living, creative, which cannot be described, because reality eludes all description. No description of truth can be lasting, for it can only be an illusion of words. You cannot know love through the description of another; to know love, you yourself must have experienced it.

This podcast is in Hindi. In all scriptures, for attaining LIBERATION, MANONASHA (quiescence of the mind), MANOLAYA (dissolution of the mind) or MANONIGRAHA (cessation of the mind) has been deemed essential. After knowing this TRUTH, reading a lot of scriptures is futility. For MANONIGRAHA, the inquiry "WHO AM I" is a complete and sufficient means. Without knowing oneself, reading scriptures day and night will not result in an inquiry into TRUTH. The "I" should be known by the JNANA-CHAKSHU (wisdom-eyes).
