Duke Dang is the executive director of Works & Process, a performing arts organization that champions and resources artists and their creative process from studio-to-stage by partnering with over a dozen residency centers across Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York to provide fully-funded residencies and presents iteratively at the Guggenheim Museum, Lincoln Center, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and SummerStage.  Under Duke’s leadership, Works & Process pioneered the bubble residency model in summer 2020, which was captured in the NY-Emmy nominated docuseries Isolation to Creation, and broadcast on PBS and ALL ARTS. Works & Process was honored with a 2021 Dance Magazine Award and nominated in 2021 and 2022 for the APAP William Dawson Award for Programmatic Excellence and Sustained Achievement. Multiple Works & Process commissions including LaTasha Barnes’ The Jazz Continuum, Les Ballet Afrik – New York Is Burning by Omari Wiles, and More Forever by Caleb Teicher and Conrad Tao have been honored with Bessie Awards.

Born at a UN refugee camp in the Philippines to Vietnamese parents seeking political asylum, Duke immigrated to California growing up with the assistance of Section 8 housing vouchers, food stamps, and attending Head Start. Prior to Works & Process, where he started as a paid college intern, Duke worked at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Glimmerglass Festival, and Sydney Theatre Company. In 2012, with his husband, he helped founded the Hudson Valley Dance Festival with Dancers Responding to AIDS which has raised over $1.3 million. He earned in BA in Art History from Boston University and MA in Performing Arts Administration from New York University.

"Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest  Paloma Hererra

In this episode of "Dance Talk”, host Joanne Carey speaks with celebrated ballerina Paloma Herrera about her journey from a young girl discovering her passion for ballet to becoming a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater and now serving as the artistic director of the Kaatsbaan Ballet Intensive.

Paloma shares her experiences, the importance of mentorship, and her vision for nurturing the next generation of dancers. The conversation highlights the significance of support systems in a dancer's career and the joy of pursuing one's passion in the art of dance.

Paloma Herrera was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and began her training at the age of seven. In January 1991, having just turned 15 years old, she moved to New York and continued her studies at the School of American Ballet. After only six months, she joined the American Ballet Theatre and, in 1995, became the youngest Principal Dancer in American Ballet Theatre history at age 19. She has appeared in ballets ranging from Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and Swan Lake, to Apollo, The Prodigal Son, and Stepping Stones. She has appeared as Guest Artist with great ballet companies around the world, including New York City Ballet, Kirov Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Tokyo Ballet, Teatro Colon, and National Ballet of Cuba, to name a few. She retired from American Ballet Theatre at the end of November 2015, right before turning 40. Since that, she moved back to her home, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and continued to teach all over the world.

In 2016, she wrote her autobiography that was presented at Feria del Libro in 2017. That same year, she also launched her own perfume Paloma Herrera, in 2019 her second fragrance Paloma Herrera Passion, and in 2022 her third fragrance Paloma Herrera Fantasy.

In Argentina she received the award: Konex de Platino, Maria Ruanova and distinctions by the Honorable Camara de Diputados de La Nación, Medalla del Bicentenario by the government of the Buenos Aires city, among many others, and since 2012 she is a member of the gallery of popular idols of the Argentine Government House. 

In 2017, she became the artistic director of Ballet Estable del Teatro Colon, where the company has grown immensely since she arrived. She resigned in 2022.

Gabrielle Lansner is an award winning filmmaker, choreographer, and producer whose work is influenced by her background in choreography and performing.  Her films have screened at dozens of festivals worldwide and garnered multiple awards.

For over 30 years, Lansner has explored artistic disciplines moving from pure dance works, to dance/theater, to film. She has always been interested in story and character: creating emotionally complex and layered works that delve into the heart and psyche.

Since 1997, she has been the Artistic Director of gabrielle lansner & company, a critically acclaimed dance/theater company based in New York City. The works have been produced at The Peter Jay Sharp Theater, HERE, River to River Festival, P.S 122, The Joyce Soho, to name a few and have toured the US and Canada. The company has received support from The Dance Films Association, The Alvin & Louise Myerberg Foundation, The Harkness Foundation, The Puffin Foundation, Altria, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and The Field.

The company’s varied explorations include delving into the lives of Holocaust victims in the literary works of Bertolt Brecht and Cynthia Ozick, exploring adolescent yearning in Carson McCullers’ “The Member of the Wedding”, examining the nature of forgiveness in a work inspired by the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission, and celebrating the life of pop icon Tina Turner in their original musical RIVER DEEP. TURNING HEADS, FROCKS IN FLIGHT, a site-specific dance performed at Battery Park City, was produced by Sitelines 2009/LMCC as part of the River to River Festival

Her latest short film, I AM NOT OK is an experimental dance film inspired by the words of Tiffiney Davis, the Executive Director of the Red Hook Art Project, in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The film has screened extensively at film festivals around the world and won Best Experimental Film at the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora FF in NYC and Best Cinedance at the Minneapolis St. Paul Int'l FF in MN. 

Lansner has also choreographed episodes of Law & Order: SVU, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

She is a member of SAG, New York Women in Film and TV,  the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, is a former  Board Member  of the Dance Films Association/DFA, NYC  and was instrumental in developing PS 122 in NYC as a rehearsal and performance space.

Isabella LaFreniere was born in Lambertville, Michigan, and began her dance training at the age of seven at the Northeast Academy of Dance under Giuseppe Canale and Scott Heinrich. At 11, she began studying with Anna Reznik and Alexei Kremnev, first at the Southold Dance Theatre in South Bend, Indiana, and then at the Joffrey Academy of Dance in Chicago, Illinois.

She began studying at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, during the 2008 summer course, and enrolled as a full-time student during the 2010 winter term. She received additional training at the Chautauqua Institution and Pacific Northwest Ballet summer programs.

Ms. LaFreniere became an apprentice with NYCB in August 2013 and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in June 2014.

Ms. LaFreniere was promoted to the rank of soloist dancer in January 2022 and principal dancer in February 2023.

Giulia Faria is from Queens, New York, where she began dancing at the age of 3 at a local ballet tap and jazz school. At 11 years-old she began training at the New York Theatre Ballet School under the direction of Diana Byer. She attended Laguardia High School of Performing Arts as a dance major. She joined New York Theatre Ballet as an apprentice in 2015, performing in ballets The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and The Alice-in-Wonderland Follies. In 2017, she spent the year dancing with New York Dance Project under Nicole Duffy and Davis Robertson where she danced leading roles in Gerald Arpino’s Birthday Variations and Africa Guzman’s Sinfonia Escarlata. She rejoined NYTB for the 2018 season.

Jarod Lewis, has been the Costume Shop Manager of the NYC Ballet since 2021 where he works alongside the Director of Costumes, Marc Happel, to lead the Costume Shop towards creating the costumes for new ballets and the refurbishments and rebuilds of existing works. During his time at NYCB Jarod and his team of 16 artisans have created 18 world premiere ballets and are preparing for 3 more for this coming Fall and Winter seasons. Before working at NYC Ballet Jarod was the Assistant Designer and Shop Manager at Halsey Onstage, a costume production company in Chicago, IL. There Jarod worked alongside the late Travis Halsey to create over 250 custom costumes that have been worn on stages such as Sea World San Antonio, Papermill Playhouse, Houston Ballet, Vero Beach Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and for YAGP. They also created costumes that have been worn in various ballets, musicals, tv shows, and operas across Canada, Australia, and France.  

Before beginning his career in costuming, Jarod grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky where he began his journey working in the performing arts by receiving his BA in Music at Morehead State University and continued education of Music Production and Technical Theatre at Troy University. Jarod has performed with various music groups on stages such as Universal Studios in Orlando, FL, the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra in Pensacola, FL, and on an international orchestra and percussion ensemble tour in Beijing and Tianjin, China. Alongside Jarod’s music career he also worked as a freelance recording engineer and the audio engineer in the marching arts with two Drum and Bugle Corps; The Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets from San Jose, California and The Cavaliers from Chicago, IL

In this first episode of two with Jarod Lewis, the manager of the New York City Ballet costume shop, join host Joanne Carey as she dives into the intricacies of costume making for the New York City Ballet and some behind the scenes and stay tuned for Part II of our converstaion where we talk all things NUTCRACKER!

Jarod shares his unique journey from a small farming community in Eastern Kentucky to managing the costume shop at one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world. He discusses the intricate art and science of costume making, the importance of communication in a diverse workplace, and the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jarod emphasizes the attention to detail required in costume design, including dyeing fabrics to match dancers' skin tones, and the collaborative effort involved in bringing a ballet to life. The conversation highlights the passion and dedication of those working behind the scenes in the dance world. Jarod's passion for his work shines through as he reflects on the lessons learned throughout his career and the exciting projects ahead.

In this episode of “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest,  Amanda Selwyn, founder of Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre. Together they discuss Amanda's journey in dance and theater and the future plans of the newly secured Amanda Selwyn Dance Theater Space as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. Amanda stresses her commitment to the community and the importance of dance education for children and its transformative impact her dance programs in schools. Amanda Selwyn (Artistic Director/Choreographer) founded Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion in 2000 and in 24 seasons, has directed over 110 productions, developed a network of artists, and created Notes in Motion’s dance education program.

Amanda recently taught workshops at Peridance, a Residency at Hofstra University, New Women, New York, the New York Gender Conference, and a Choreography Master Class at Temple University. Her 24th Season is being presented at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center and her 20th Anniversary Season was presented at Baruch Performing Arts Center both as Residency Artists of the CUNY Dance Initiative.

She has choreographed dance for Chicago's Motivity; for theatre productions including House on Mango Street, Free to be You an Me, Once Upon a Mattress, The Wiz, Little Shop of Horrors, and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory; and for her original theatre productions which include Herland, Yellow Feather, and Slitting the Clouds.

In addition to her choreographic work, Amanda has directed off-broadway theatre in NYC .

Amanda teaches dance and theatre to New York City children and has been on faculty at The Brearley School, Brooklyn Friends School, Beit Rabban School, Solomon Schechter School, and the New Acting Company. She has taught dance composition and technique at the Berkshire Institute for Music and Art and taught dance and theatre in Israel at the Israel Museum, English Village, and the Arad Community Center.

She is the recipient of grants from the NY State Council on the Arts, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Friars Foundation, Dizzy Feet Foundation, Bronx Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Development Fund, NY City Council Members Bill DeBlasio, Kevin Riley, Andy King, Carlina Rivera, Althea Stevens, James Gennaro, Irma Vernikov, Marjorie Velazquez, Farah N. Louis, Margaret Chin, and Rosie Mendez, Manhattan Borough President, Met Life, City National Bank, Credit Suisse, and the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation.

Her work has been presented on Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Stage, at Tribeca Performing Arts Center Pushing Progress at Peridance to name a few.

She has a Masters from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in performance studies and a B.S. from Northwestern University in theatre, women's studies, and dance.

In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey chats with Jody Sperling, the artistic director of Time Lapse Dance. They explore Jody's journey into dance, the absolute joy it brings, and the influence of historical figures especially Loie Fuller.

The discussion delves into the intersection of dance and science, particularly in relation to climate change and environmental themes. Jody shares insights on the role of costumes in her performances, the experience of dancing, and the importance of community connection. They also touch on the two solo works Jody created in homage to Loïe Fuller, Claire de Lune and Vive La Loïe! (world premiere) on the Paul Taylor Company  for their Lincoln Center Season at the Koch Theater.  Tune in - I am sure you  will find Jody's joy and exuberance infectious!

Jody Sperling is A New York City-based dancer-choreographer,who has created more than 50 works. She is considered the world’s leading exponent of the style of early modern dancer and performance technologist ⁠Loïe Fuller⁠ (1862-1928). Sperling has expanded Fuller’s genre into the 21st century, deploying it in the context of contemporary and environmental performance forms. She is currently Eco-Artist-in-Residence at The New York Society for Ethical Culture.

Years of working in Fuller’s idiom has influenced Sperling’s awareness of the body’s relationship with the larger environment. In 2014, she participated in a polar science mission—as the first choreographer-in-residence aboard a US Coast Guard icebreaker—and danced on Arctic sea ice. Her short film Ice Floe, shot during the expedition, won a Creative Climate Award. Following her Arctic experience, her artistic focus has been on engaging with climate creatively.

Sperling earned a World Choreography Award nomination for her work on the French feature film “The Dancer” (Dir. Stephanie Di Giusto, 2016 Cannes Film Festival). She is also featured and created a new work for the Fuller documentary Obsessed with Light (Dirs. Sabine Krayenbuehl and Zeva Oelbaum, premiere 2023 Rome Film Fest). 

Sperling and company have performed or taught throughout the US and in Bahrain, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia, and Scotland. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University in Dance and Italian Studies, an MA in Performance Studies from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and an MFA in Dance from Montclair State University.

Sperling and Time Lapse Dance have received commissions from the Vermont Performance Lab with Marlboro College, The University of Wyoming through the NEA American Masterpieces Program, and the Streb Lab for Action Mechanics. Works have been featured in the repertory of The Netherlands’ Introdans ensemble and performed by Ice Theatre of New York.

Sperling, also a dance writer and scholar, has served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Dance History Scholars (SDHS). Her dance writings have appeared online and in print in Dance Magazine, The Village Voice, The SDHS Conference Proceedings, The International Encyclopedia of Dance, and she has contributed chapters to the books Birds of Paradise: Costume as Cinematic Spectacle (British Film Institute, 2014) and Milestones in Dance in the USA (Routledge, 2022).

Prior to founding Time Lapse Dance, Sperling performed as a dancer in the works of other choreographers including Sarah Michelson and Yvonne Rainer.
