    Lar Lubovitch is one of America’s most versatile, popular and widely seen choreographers. Based in New York City, Lubovitch’s company has performed throughout the world, and his dances have also been performed by many other major companies, including American Ballet Theater, Joffrey Ballet, New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and many others. His dances are renowned for their musicality, rhapsodic style and sophisticated formal structures. His radiant, highly technical choreography and deeply humanistic voice have been acclaimed worldwide.

    THE COMPANY. The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company is internationally renowned as one of the world's best dance companies. Founded in 1968, the company is now celebrating its 56th anniversary. The 50th season kicked off with a preview performance on Nov 13 (2017) at Lincoln Center’s Clark Studio Theater, and culminated with performances from April 17-22 (2018) at the Joyce Theater. Celebrated for both its choreographic excellence and its unsurpassed dancing, the company has created more than 120 new dances and performed before millions throughout the United States and in more than 40 foreign countries. During 2023, the company created two new dances. The first, Conversing With Brahms, premiered in Dallas in April, and the second, Desire, premiered at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC on December 5, 2023. During 2024, the company is creating Many Angels, together with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

    David Dorfman is the Artistic Director and Founder of David Dorfman Dance (1987), has been Professor of Dance at Connecticut College since 2004. Dorfman received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2005 to continue his research and choreography in the topics of power and powerlessness, including activism, dissidence, and underground movements. DD has been honored with four fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, three New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships, an American Choreographer's Award, the first Paul Taylor Fellowship from The Yard, and a New York Dance & Performance “Bessie” Award.

    David was a 2019 United States Artists Fellow in Dance. His work has been commissioned widely in the U.S. and in Europe, by Dancing Wheels (Cleveland), AXIS Dance Company (Oakland), and Bedlam Dance Company (London). 

    His forays into theater include choreography for the Tony Award-winning play,Indecent, by Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, for which DD received a Lucille Lortel Award and Chita Rivera Nomination for best choreography for the play’s Off-Broadway run. David traveled to London in March 2020 to set choreography forIndecent’s UK premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

    In addition, David has contributed his choreography for the upcomingWhisper House, a new musical by Duncan Sheik and Kyle Jarrow, Ibsen’sAn Enemy of the People at Yale Rep;Our Town, a co-production of Deaf West and Pasadena Playhouse;Assassins at Yale Rep; and the original musicalGreen Violin at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, for which he won a 2003 Barrymore Award for best choreography. 

    Dorfman tours an evening of solos and duets,Live Sax Acts, with dear friend and collaborator Dan Froot, most recently in New York City and at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe.  As a performer, he toured internationally with Kei Takei's Moving Earth and Susan Marshall & Co.

    DD hails from Chicago and holds a BS in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis (1977). He appeared on several episodes of A Chance to Dance, a reality show on OvationTV starring Dorfman’s pals, the BalletBoyz .

    DD continually thanks Martha Myers and the late Daniel Nagrin, for being his dance mom and dad; his late parents, Oscar and Jeanette, for inspiring him to dance to heal and instilling the importance of a good joke; and his in-house “family project”, Lisa and Samson, for sharing with him the practice of unconditional love.

    In this episode of "Dance Talk” ® , host Joanne Carey interviews Skylar Brandt, a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre.     Skylar Brandt was born in Purchase, New York and began her training at the age of six at Scarsdale Ballet Studio. She attended the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre from 2005-2009. Brandt was a silver medalist at Youth America Grand Prix in 2004 and 2008. Brandt joined ABT II in 2009, became an apprentice with ABT in 2010, and joined the corps de ballet in 2011. She was promoted to Soloist in 2015 and to Principal in 2020. Among her leading roles with the Company are Giselle in Giselle, Medora in Le Corsaire, Kitri in Don Quixote, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Gamzatti in La Bayadere, Olga in Onegin, Clara, the Princess in The Nutcracker, Young Jane in Jane Eyre, Columbine in Harlequinade, Princess Praline in Whipped Cream, the Lead Maiden in Firebird, the Golden Cockerel in The Golden Cockerel, and roles in The Green Table, Pillar of Fire, The Sleeping Beauty, Bach Partita, The Brahms-Haydn Variations, Company B, Gong, In the Upper Room, Piano Concerto #1, Raymonda Divertissements, Sinfonietta, Symphonic Variations, and AFTERITE. Brandt was awarded a 2013 Princess Grace Foundation-USA Dance Fellowship. That same year, she was featured in the movie “Ballet’s Greatest Hits”. In 2018, Brandt was the recipient of an unprecedented Special Jury Award for her performances on the Russian television show “Big Ballet”. In 2022, Brandt was named to the renowned "Forbes 30 Under 30" list of most influential leaders and entrepreneurs.

    Omayra Amaya is modern flamenco dancer and choreographer deeply rooted in proud gypsy tradition. The daughter of flamenco dancers Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of the legendary Carmen Amaya, Omayra brings new relevance to flamenco while never losing sight of her legacy.

    Omayra first appeared on stage with her parents’ company as a 3-year-old and often interrupted their performances. Her first choreographed role came at age 12, when she performed as her father’s partner. Since then, she has developed a style that is both elegant and emotional, and her powerful performances and impeccable technique have won her fans all over the world.

    Omayra and her company have performed at Lincoln Center and the Players Theater in New York City; flamenco festivals in Madrid, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles; the Shanghai Theater Center in Shanghai and the Guo Tai Theater in ChongQin, China; and in a critically acclaimed nine-month residency at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel. Omayra has also appeared on film: She was the subject of “Gypsy Heart,” a documentary by Jocelyn Ajami, and performed with Steve Martin in “The Pink Panther II.”


    The Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company, based in Miami, Florida, performs all over the world under the artistic direction of Omayra Amaya. Founded in 1994, the company is grounded in flamenco’s centuries-old rhythms, traditional structure and deep emotions, yet also stretches to embrace world music and Jazz, innovative staging and modern movement. Critics have hailed Omayra Amaya’s choreography as “mesmerizing,” “intense,” and “stylish” and described the company’s world-class dancers, singers, and musicians as having “a knock-your-socks-off synergy.”

    Sara Adams was born in Dennis, Massachusetts, and began her dance training at the age of six at the Mid-Cape Ballet Academy.

    She later studied at the Boston Ballet School, before taking a summer course at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, during the summer of 2003.

    She enrolled as a full-time student at SAB from 2003 to 2008. She became an apprentice with NYCB in June 2008 and became a member of the corps de ballet in September 2009. In February 2017, Ms. Adams was promoted to soloist.

    Duke Dang is the executive director of Works & Process, a performing arts organization that champions and resources artists and their creative process from studio-to-stage by partnering with over a dozen residency centers across Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York to provide fully-funded residencies and presents iteratively at the Guggenheim Museum, Lincoln Center, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and SummerStage.  Under Duke’s leadership, Works & Process pioneered the bubble residency model in summer 2020, which was captured in the NY-Emmy nominated docuseries Isolation to Creation, and broadcast on PBS and ALL ARTS. Works & Process was honored with a 2021 Dance Magazine Award and nominated in 2021 and 2022 for the APAP William Dawson Award for Programmatic Excellence and Sustained Achievement. Multiple Works & Process commissions including LaTasha Barnes’ The Jazz Continuum, Les Ballet Afrik – New York Is Burning by Omari Wiles, and More Forever by Caleb Teicher and Conrad Tao have been honored with Bessie Awards.

    Born at a UN refugee camp in the Philippines to Vietnamese parents seeking political asylum, Duke immigrated to California growing up with the assistance of Section 8 housing vouchers, food stamps, and attending Head Start. Prior to Works & Process, where he started as a paid college intern, Duke worked at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Glimmerglass Festival, and Sydney Theatre Company. In 2012, with his husband, he helped founded the Hudson Valley Dance Festival with Dancers Responding to AIDS which has raised over $1.3 million. He earned in BA in Art History from Boston University and MA in Performing Arts Administration from New York University.

  • Paloma Herrera, With Gratitude for Her Life in Ballet that is Inspiring the Next Generation

    In this episode of "Dance Talk”, host Joanne Carey speaks with celebrated ballerina Paloma Herrera about her journey from a young girl discovering her passion for ballet to becoming a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater and now serving as the artistic director of the Kaatsbaan Ballet Intensive.

    Paloma shares her experiences, the importance of mentorship, and her vision for nurturing the next generation of dancers. The conversation highlights the significance of support systems in a dancer's career and the joy of pursuing one's passion in the art of dance.

    Paloma Herrera was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and began her training at the age of seven. In January 1991, having just turned 15 years old, she moved to New York and continued her studies at the School of American Ballet. After only six months, she joined the American Ballet Theatre and, in 1995, became the youngest Principal Dancer in American Ballet Theatre history at age 19. She has appeared in ballets ranging from Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, and Swan Lake, to Apollo, The Prodigal Son, and Stepping Stones. She has appeared as Guest Artist with great ballet companies around the world, including New York City Ballet, Kirov Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, Tokyo Ballet, Teatro Colon, and National Ballet of Cuba, to name a few. She retired from American Ballet Theatre at the end of November 2015, right before turning 40. Since that, she moved back to her home, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and continued to teach all over the world.

    In 2016, she wrote her autobiography that was presented at Feria del Libro in 2017. That same year, she also launched her own perfume Paloma Herrera, in 2019 her second fragrance Paloma Herrera Passion, and in 2022 her third fragrance Paloma Herrera Fantasy.

    In Argentina she received the award: Konex de Platino, Maria Ruanova and distinctions by the Honorable Camara de Diputados de La Nación, Medalla del Bicentenario by the government of the Buenos Aires city, among many others, and since 2012 she is a member of the gallery of popular idols of the Argentine Government House. 

    In 2017, she became the artistic director of Ballet Estable del Teatro Colon, where the company has grown immensely since she arrived. She resigned in 2022.

    Gabrielle Lansner is an award winning filmmaker, choreographer, and producer whose work is influenced by her background in choreography and performing.  Her films have screened at dozens of festivals worldwide and garnered multiple awards.

    For over 30 years, Lansner has explored artistic disciplines moving from pure dance works, to dance/theater, to film. She has always been interested in story and character: creating emotionally complex and layered works that delve into the heart and psyche.

    Since 1997, she has been the Artistic Director of gabrielle lansner & company, a critically acclaimed dance/theater company based in New York City. The works have been produced at The Peter Jay Sharp Theater, HERE, River to River Festival, P.S 122, The Joyce Soho, to name a few and have toured the US and Canada. The company has received support from The Dance Films Association, The Alvin & Louise Myerberg Foundation, The Harkness Foundation, The Puffin Foundation, Altria, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and The Field.

    The company’s varied explorations include delving into the lives of Holocaust victims in the literary works of Bertolt Brecht and Cynthia Ozick, exploring adolescent yearning in Carson McCullers’ “The Member of the Wedding”, examining the nature of forgiveness in a work inspired by the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission, and celebrating the life of pop icon Tina Turner in their original musical RIVER DEEP. TURNING HEADS, FROCKS IN FLIGHT, a site-specific dance performed at Battery Park City, was produced by Sitelines 2009/LMCC as part of the River to River Festival


    Her latest short film, I AM NOT OK is an experimental dance film inspired by the words of Tiffiney Davis, the Executive Director of the Red Hook Art Project, in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The film has screened extensively at film festivals around the world and won Best Experimental Film at the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora FF in NYC and Best Cinedance at the Minneapolis St. Paul Int'l FF in MN. 

    Lansner has also choreographed episodes of Law & Order: SVU, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

    She is a member of SAG, New York Women in Film and TV,  the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, is a former  Board Member  of the Dance Films Association/DFA, NYC  and was instrumental in developing PS 122 in NYC as a rehearsal and performance space.

    In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey speaks with Samantha Géracht, the Artistic Director of Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble. Together they discuss the influence of Anna Sokolow's work, the legacy of Anna Sokolow's immense catalogue of work and what an integral modern dance pioneer Sokolow is to the dance community. They also discuss the upcoming concert that emphasizes joy and light during the winter season.
    Samantha shares insights into her role as artistic director the growth of the company, the transformative experience of working with Sokolow's choreography, and the vision for the future of the company.
    Samantha Géracht performed with Anna Sokolow’s Players’ Project for eleven years and is a founding member of the Sokolow Theatre/Dance Ensemble. In 2017 Ms. Géracht was appointed the ensemble’s artistic director. She has toured and taught Sokolow’s repertory nationally and internationally, setting Ms. Sokolow’s works on professional companies, university dance programs, and solo dance artists, including the Centre de Danse Nationale de Paris, the Boston Conservatory, Williams College, The Ailey School/Fordham University, Loyola Chicago, Franklin and Marshall College, Barnard College, Clarence Brooks, Jennifer Conely, Sandra Kaufman, Kanopy Dance Company and Academy, Ellen Robbins Dance, and Christine Dakin.
    Ms. Géracht studied technique and composition with Alwin Nikolais and Murry Louis, Humphrey/Limon with Jim May, Betty Jones, Fritz Luden, and Gail Corbin, and Weidman with Deborah Carr. She has taught in the Professional Studies program at the Limon Institute, the Herbert Berghoff (‘HB’) Studio, and is on the faculty of the Hoboken Charter School. Ms. Geracht performed the Humphrey/Weidman repertory with Deborah Carr Theater Dance Ensemble and Gail Corbin. She has appeared with Rae Ballard’s Thoughts in Motion, and as a guest artist with David Parker and The Bang Group. In 2016 she choreographed Shadowbox Theatre’s The Earth and Me, a critically acclaimed climate change puppet/dance opera created for NYC public schools and community centers. Ms. Géracht served as a panelist for the Library of Congress opening of the “New Dance Group” archives. She holds an MFA in dance from Montclair State University (NJ) and a BS in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ms. Géracht is committed to the preservation of early American Modern Dance, making the works of modern dance pioneers more accessible to dance education programs, young artists, and new audiences.

  • Isabella LaFreniere, Principal New York City Ballet: Celebrating Ballet and Beyond

    "Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Isabella LaFreniere, Principal Dancer, New York City Ballet.


    In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey interviews Isabella Lafreniere, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet. They discuss Isabella's journey into dance, the challenges of continuous improvement, and the demanding schedule of a professional dancer. Isabella shares her experiences from a recent tour in Copenhagen, the significance of costumes in ballet, and her roles in The Nutcracker. The conversation highlights the dedication and hard work behind the glamour of ballet, as well as the excitement of upcoming performances.

    Isabella LaFreniere was born in Lambertville, Michigan, and began her dance training at the age of seven at the Northeast Academy of Dance under Giuseppe Canale and Scott Heinrich. At 11, she began studying with Anna Reznik and Alexei Kremnev, first at the Southold Dance Theatre in South Bend, Indiana, and then at the Joffrey Academy of Dance in Chicago, Illinois.

    She began studying at the School of American Ballet (SAB), the official school of New York City Ballet, during the 2008 summer course, and enrolled as a full-time student during the 2010 winter term. She received additional training at the Chautauqua Institution and Pacific Northwest Ballet summer programs.

    Ms. LaFreniere became an apprentice with NYCB in August 2013 and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in June 2014.

    Ms. LaFreniere was promoted to the rank of soloist dancer in January 2022 and principal dancer in February 2023.
