    Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey and special guest, Giulia Faria, Ballerina, New York Theatre Ballet.

    In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey interviews Giulia Faria, a dancer with the New York Theatre Ballet, about her journey from a young dancer to her current role as the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker.

    Giulia Faria is from Queens, New York, where she began dancing at the age of 3 at a local ballet tap and jazz school. At 11 years-old she began training at the New York Theatre Ballet School under the direction of Diana Byer. She attended Laguardia High School of Performing Arts as a dance major. She joined New York Theatre Ballet as an apprentice in 2015, performing in ballets The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and The Alice-in-Wonderland Follies. In 2017, she spent the year dancing with New York Dance Project under Nicole Duffy and Davis Robertson where she danced leading roles in Gerald Arpino’s Birthday Variations and Africa Guzman’s Sinfonia Escarlata. She rejoined NYTB for the 2018 season.

    Jarod Lewis, has been the Costume Shop Manager of the NYC Ballet since 2021 where he works alongside the Director of Costumes, Marc Happel, to lead the Costume Shop towards creating the costumes for new ballets and the refurbishments and rebuilds of existing works. During his time at NYCB Jarod and his team of 16 artisans have created 18 world premiere ballets and are preparing for 3 more for this coming Fall and Winter seasons. Before working at NYC Ballet Jarod was the Assistant Designer and Shop Manager at Halsey Onstage, a costume production company in Chicago, IL. There Jarod worked alongside the late Travis Halsey to create over 250 custom costumes that have been worn on stages such as Sea World San Antonio, Papermill Playhouse, Houston Ballet, Vero Beach Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and for YAGP. They also created costumes that have been worn in various ballets, musicals, tv shows, and operas across Canada, Australia, and France.  

    Before beginning his career in costuming, Jarod grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky where he began his journey working in the performing arts by receiving his BA in Music at Morehead State University and continued education of Music Production and Technical Theatre at Troy University. Jarod has performed with various music groups on stages such as Universal Studios in Orlando, FL, the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra in Pensacola, FL, and on an international orchestra and percussion ensemble tour in Beijing and Tianjin, China. Alongside Jarod’s music career he also worked as a freelance recording engineer and the audio engineer in the marching arts with two Drum and Bugle Corps; The Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets from San Jose, California and The Cavaliers from Chicago, IL

    Jarod shares his unique journey from a small farming community in Eastern Kentucky to managing the costume shop at one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world.     Amanda Selwyn (Artistic Director/Choreographer) founded Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre/Notes in Motion in 2000 and in 24 seasons, has directed over 110 productions, developed a network of artists, and created Notes in Motion’s dance education program.

    Amanda recently taught workshops at Peridance, a Residency at Hofstra University, New Women, New York, the New York Gender Conference, and a Choreography Master Class at Temple University. Her 24th Season is being presented at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center and her 20th Anniversary Season was presented at Baruch Performing Arts Center both as Residency Artists of the CUNY Dance Initiative.

    She has choreographed dance for Chicago's Motivity; for theatre productions including House on Mango Street, Free to be You an Me, Once Upon a Mattress, The Wiz, Little Shop of Horrors, and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory; and for her original theatre productions which include Herland, Yellow Feather, and Slitting the Clouds.

    In addition to her choreographic work, Amanda has directed off-broadway theatre in NYC .

    Amanda teaches dance and theatre to New York City children and has been on faculty at The Brearley School, Brooklyn Friends School, Beit Rabban School, Solomon Schechter School, and the New Acting Company. She has taught dance composition and technique at the Berkshire Institute for Music and Art and taught dance and theatre in Israel at the Israel Museum, English Village, and the Arad Community Center.

    She is the recipient of grants from the NY State Council on the Arts, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Friars Foundation, Dizzy Feet Foundation, Bronx Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Development Fund, NY City Council Members Bill DeBlasio, Kevin Riley, Andy King, Carlina Rivera, Althea Stevens, James Gennaro, Irma Vernikov, Marjorie Velazquez, Farah N. Louis, Margaret Chin, and Rosie Mendez, Manhattan Borough President, Met Life, City National Bank, Credit Suisse, and the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation.

    Her work has been presented on Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out Stage, at Tribeca Performing Arts Center Pushing Progress at Peridance to name a few.

    She has a Masters from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in performance studies and a B.S. from Northwestern University in theatre, women's studies, and dance.

  • Jody Sperling, Artistic Director Time Lapse Dance: All Her Roads Lead to Joy & Light.

    In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey chats with Jody Sperling, the artistic director of Time Lapse Dance. They explore Jody's journey into dance, the absolute joy it brings, and the influence of historical figures especially Loie Fuller.

    The discussion delves into the intersection of dance and science, particularly in relation to climate change and environmental themes. Jody shares insights on the role of costumes in her performances, the experience of dancing, and the importance of community connection. They also touch on the two solo works Jody created in homage to Loïe Fuller, Claire de Lune and Vive La Loïe! (world premiere) on the Paul Taylor Company  for their Lincoln Center Season at the Koch Theater.  Tune in - I am sure you  will find Jody's joy and exuberance infectious!

    Jody Sperling is A New York City-based dancer-choreographer,who has created more than 50 works. She is considered the world’s leading exponent of the style of early modern dancer and performance technologist ⁠Loïe Fuller⁠ (1862-1928). Sperling has expanded Fuller’s genre into the 21st century, deploying it in the context of contemporary and environmental performance forms. She is currently Eco-Artist-in-Residence at The New York Society for Ethical Culture.

    Years of working in Fuller’s idiom has influenced Sperling’s awareness of the body’s relationship with the larger environment. In 2014, she participated in a polar science mission—as the first choreographer-in-residence aboard a US Coast Guard icebreaker—and danced on Arctic sea ice. Her short film Ice Floe, shot during the expedition, won a Creative Climate Award. Following her Arctic experience, her artistic focus has been on engaging with climate creatively.

    Sperling earned a World Choreography Award nomination for her work on the French feature film “The Dancer” (Dir. Stephanie Di Giusto, 2016 Cannes Film Festival). She is also featured and created a new work for the Fuller documentary Obsessed with Light (Dirs. Sabine Krayenbuehl and Zeva Oelbaum, premiere 2023 Rome Film Fest). 

    Sperling and company have performed or taught throughout the US and in Bahrain, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Russia, and Scotland. She holds a BA from Wesleyan University in Dance and Italian Studies, an MA in Performance Studies from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and an MFA in Dance from Montclair State University.

    Sperling and Time Lapse Dance have received commissions from the Vermont Performance Lab with Marlboro College, The University of Wyoming through the NEA American Masterpieces Program, and the Streb Lab for Action Mechanics. Works have been featured in the repertory of The Netherlands’ Introdans ensemble and performed by Ice Theatre of New York.

    Sperling, also a dance writer and scholar, has served on the Board of Directors of the Society of Dance History Scholars (SDHS). Her dance writings have appeared online and in print in Dance Magazine, The Village Voice, The SDHS Conference Proceedings, The International Encyclopedia of Dance, and she has contributed chapters to the books Birds of Paradise: Costume as Cinematic Spectacle (British Film Institute, 2014) and Milestones in Dance in the USA (Routledge, 2022).

    Prior to founding Time Lapse Dance, Sperling performed as a dancer in the works of other choreographers including Sarah Michelson and Yvonne Rainer.

  • Román Baca, Artistic Director Exit 12 Dance Company: Ballet & the Marines, Semper Fidelis Runs Deep.

    In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey chats with Román Baca, artistic director of Exit 12 Dance Company, who shares his unique journey from being a ballet dancer to serving in the United States Marine Corps and then returning to the world of dance. The conversation explores the intersection of dance and military experiences, the healing power of art for veterans, and the mission of Exit 12 to tell stories that challenge perceptions of military life. Román discusses the importance of community engagement and the transformative impact of dance on both performers and audiences and his continued commitment to helping veterans heal.

    He has choreographed dance works that explore the military veteran experience and the impact of war on civilians and families. He leads workshops and lectures to aid veterans’ recovery and inspire critical conversations about military service through the power of dance. 

    Mr. Baca graduated from St. Mary’s College of California with a BA, cum laude, in the Performing Arts and was awarded a Fulbright to the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, UK where he completed his MFA with Merit in Choreography. 

    Mr. Baca’s practice-based research produced his thesis titled Choreographing Soldier’s Stories to Provoke Empathy in Audiences winning major awards.  He has also served as a Junior Research Scientist and data manager for several military research studies.

    Mr. Baca has worked with the Soldiers’ Arts Academy C.I.C and also served on the leadership team that delivered the first UK Veterans Art Festival alongside the 2019 UK Invictus Trials in Sheffield, UK.  He has also served as a panelist reviewing awards for Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network, US-UK Fulbright candidates, and has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts Dance Panel 2020.

    Mr. Baca is a 2024 Fellow with the George W. Bush Institute’s Stand-To Veteran Leadership Program and has served as a fellow with Veterans in Global Leadership, The Mission Continues, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

    Román Baca is the Artistic Director of Exit12 Dance Company and a PhD Candidate investigating the military human through the arts at York St. John University in the UK.  Román Baca is also the Deputy Project Manager for Bravo 22, a Royal British Legion Funded Recovery Through the Arts Programme and the Project Manager for an arts and recovery pilot project with the Ministry of Defense.  Working through the arts with the military Mr. Baca has developed major partnerships and projects with world-class institutions including the Intrepid Museum, The British Museum, the Ministry of Defense, CreatiVets, The Metropolitan Museum of Art among others. Mr. Baca is a classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer. He has danced in the US for the New Mexico Ballet Company, Connecticut Ballet, the Nutmeg Ballet, Ballet Theatre Company. He has served as movement director for several off-Broadway plays and has taught ballet in London and NYC at Pineapple, Alvin Ailey, Peridance, City Academy, and the United Nations.  In 2001 he took a hiatus from dance and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a machine-gunner and fire-team leader in Fallujah, Iraq during the US-led Iraq War. After the war, Mr. Baca returned to dance and co-founded Exit12 Dance Company, which tells war stories, choreographically, to increase cross-cultural understanding and heal divisions.

  • Kayla Farrish, Choreographer: A Re-Imagination Worth Imagining, Collaborating With the Limon Dance Company

    In this episode of Dance Talk, host Joanne Carey chats with Kayla Farrish, a multifaceted artist known for her work as a dancer, choreographer, and photographer. Kayla was recentlly commissioned to re-imagine a work for the Limon Dance Company with its World Premiere at the Joyce Theater, NYC.

    Kayla shares her journey into the world of dance, her creative process, and her recent collaboration with the Limon Dance Company to reimagine lost works. The conversation delves into the importance of community, the role of music in dance, and the significance of experimentation in choreography. Kayla emphasizes the need for artistic expression that honors the full range of human experience, including whim, magic, and melancholy. She encourages young dancers to embrace their creativity and find their unique voice in the dance world.


    Kayla Farrish is NY based dancer, choreographer, director, and photographer. She is a North Carolina native born into a dance-loving family. In 2013, she graduated from the University of Arizona summa cum laude, and was awarded the Gertrude Shurr Award for excellence in modern dance and passionate dancing. Since moving to New York, she has freelanced with various artists and companies including Punchdrunk Sleep No More NYC, Kyle Abraham/Abraham. In. Motion, Kate Weare Company, Helen Simoneau Danse, Rashuan Mitchell/Silas Reiner, Aszure Barton and Artists, Madboots Dance, Nicole Von Arx, Danielle Russo Performance Project, Chris Masters Dance Company, Elena Vazintaris/Dance Projects and others.  

    Both independently and through companies, she has worked as a rehearsal assistant and teaching artist, instructing at various programs including University of NC School of the Arts, University of the Arts, The Juilliard School, NYU Tisch Dance Program, and local dance organizations and studios, and beyond.

Sonia shares her inspiring journey from her early years in dance, through her transition from a professional dancer to a career in finance, and ultimately to her current role in arts administration. The conversation highlights the importance of collaboration in the arts, the challenges of career transitions, and the innovative programming at Baryshnikov Arts that supports artists in their creative processes. Sonia emphasizes the value of taking risks and stepping outside of one's comfort zone to discover new opportunities in life and art. 


    Sonja Kostich brings with her both the knowledge and experience of having been a professional dancer for over two decades as well as significant business acumen derived from her business education and time working at Goldman Sachs. Through a unique and successful professional trajectory, she now merges her artistic and business experience as an arts leader.

    Ms. Kostich was hired by Mikhail Baryshnikov at the age of 17 to join American Ballet Theatre from The School of Classical Ballet, the training school for ABT created by Mr. Baryshnikov, consisting of only seven female students and five male students. She later danced with the San Francisco Ballet and the Zurich Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project, and in multiple collaborations with opera/theater director Peter Sellars, before co-founding OtherShore, which she co-directed for six years. Her experience in ballet, contemporary, and modern dance resulted in a diverse international career that spanned across artistic disciplines.Upon retiring from dancing, Ms. Kostich returned to school, obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting and Business Communication from Zicklin School of Business, CUNY Baruch College, where she graduated Salutatorian at the age of 42. Following, she began a full-time position at Goldman Sachs in the Finance Division with a focus on regulatory capital requirements. Simultaneously she obtained an MA in Arts Administration, eventually returning to the dance world, first as the finance manager at Mark Morris Dance Group and then as program manager at New York City Center. From 2018 to 2022, she served as the Chief Executive and Artistic Officer at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, a 153-acre artist sanctuary located in Tivoli, NY, where she led the successful rebrand and revitalization of the 30+ year organization, bringing it to award-winning status for its significant artistic and economic contributions to the Hudson Valley.

    In October 2022, Ms. Kostich joined Baryshnikov Arts as its new Executive Director.     PRISMA is Built around the ideas of origins and personal mythology, the work will explore genesis moments. Each of the artists involved has a particular and impactful moment where they started pursuing one direction in their life, and their world was changed by a singular moment. Using this frame, they will explore the ideas storytelling has around the personal human journey and growth. The show uses live music and choreography to express the ineffable experiences we have on these journeys. The audience will experience the hybrid musical form of beatboxing mixed with classical strings as well as dance in the form of contemporary, partnering, and hip hop.

    In this episode of “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest, Carl Flink, dancer, choreographer, and academic, discussing his journey into dance, the philosophy behind his company Black Label Movement, and the upcoming performance 'Battleground,' premiering at American Dance Festival.

    They explore the intersections of dance and law, the teaching of modern dance, and the thematic depth of Flink's work, particularly in relation to societal issues and the human experience.

    Carl Flink is an American choreographer, dancer, director and academic based in Minneapolis, MN USA. He is the founder and artistic director of Black Label Movement, a contemporary dance company based in Minneapolis. He is also the Nadine Jette Sween Professor of Dance and director of the dance program at University of Minnesota. Flink was a member of the Jose Limón Dance Company from 1992 to 1998, among other NYC based dance companies including Creach/Koester Men Dancing, Janis Brenner & Dancers and Nina Winthrop & Dancers. He has been a frequent guest artist with Shapiro & Smith Dance.

    Flink's work is focused in choreography, theatrical movement direction, contemporary dance and partnering technique, and dance/science collaborations. His work as a dancer, choreographer and director has been featured in the media numerous times.

    Flink's TED talk in 2011 entitled Dance v. PowerPoint has received media recognition. He has been named to the University of Minnesota Theatre Arts & Dance Department Wall of Note and was featured in Dance Magazine in an article entitled "Flying through Space."

    Flink graduated in Political Science and Women's Studies from University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts in 1990. He then earned his Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School in 2001, where he was a Public Interest Law Fellow and a Skadden Fellowship Alternate.

    Through Black Label, he has created commissions for MADCO (St. Louis, MO), the American Dance Festival Footprints Series (Durham, NC), Same Planet Different World (Chicago, IL) and Company C (San Francisco, CA). He has also created presentations for the 2011 TEDx Brussels, 2012 TED: Full Spectrum (Long Beach, CA), 2013 TEDMED (Washington D.C. and the 2020 TEDx Minneapolis). His residencies for college dance programs include University of Florida-Gainesville Brenau University, University of North Georgia, University of Utah, Utah Valley State, University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign University of Iowa, Mount Holyoke College and Roger Williams University, among others.
