  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 459 – THE HOUSES THAT OCTOBER BUILT Franchise
Halloween haunts, those yearly “houses” or hay rides that appear in October as a themed carnival, have become more than customary.  They’ve become staples.  Unlike the ones decades ago when they were just done quickly as fundraisers for girl scouts, now they are filled with special effects, have a lot of props, and are marketed statewide.  So having the idea of merging them into a found footage horror film seemed like a good idea.  In 2015, THE HOUSES THAT OCTOBER BUILT was released on VOD getting a lot of buzz.  Its follow up, THE HOUSES THAT OCTOBER BUILT 2, followed in 2017
Brandy, Zack, Bobby, Mikey, and Jeff decide as a group to visit some of the more notorious “haunts” around the country.  They head out in their rented RV and begin documenting the various events.  When they hear that there is an underground version called the Blue Skeleton, they decide to hunt them out.  This leads them first to Texas and eventually Louisiana.  Their excitement soon leads to discomfort and finally may lead to possibly their deaths.
The two films are directed by Bobby Roe who also is one of the stars.  He co-wrote it with his co-star Zack Andrews.  The first received fairly decent reviews while the second, though not as favorable by critics, was also well received by fans.  As the Dark Discussions Halloween episode, your co-hosts take a look at this mini-film franchise and gives their thoughts.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 458 – ALONE (2020)
The little film that could.  Small, quiet, and unfamiliar films pop up every so often.  Some aren’t necessarily original yet they are done so well.  And these movies sometimes spread by word of mouth.  One film, ALONE (2020) directed by John Hyams, has slowly grown in popularity.  One VOD service, iTunes, actually had it lost among their “Independent” section of films.  Now three weeks later, ALONE is in their top 40 horror movies of the month.
Jessica (Jules Willcox) is a young widow who has been living with depression for far too long.  Out of the blue, she has decided she’s had enough.  She packs up all her belongings and heads out to the Northwest to start anew.  While traveling the forested and remote roads, she almost gets in an accident with an SUV.  After the perpetrator (Marc Menchaca) shows signs of road rage, Jessica finds out that traveling alone may not have been a good thing at all.
The movie has had a run outside of VOD too with forty-four screens at drive-ins throughout the states.  Directed by John Hyams, off a screenplay by Mattias Olsson, the movie stars Jules Willcox in possibly her first major role along with Marc Menchaca as the stranger.  John Hyams, who’s the showrunner of the successful series BLACK SUMMER (2019), joins your co-hosts to answer some further questions they have after doing their review of the movie.  The director may even discuss a bit about season 2 of Black Summer.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 457 – M.O.M. MOTHERS OF MONSTERS (2020)
What do you do when you live with an unstable person?  And what if he is your child?  You are responsible for him so it’s not like you can remove the person from your life.  The latest horror/thriller M.O.M.:  Mothers of Monsters (2020) is a found footage movie that takes a look at this experience.  It also looks deeply into not just the child but also the parent and even grandparent.
Abbey Bell (Melinda Page Hamilton) is a divorced mother living with her teenage son Jacob (Bailey Edwards).  Unfortunately Jacob seems to be more than just a thorn in Abbey’s life.  He destroys her property and has violent fits.  But her struggles aren’t known by others since Jacob is a good student and is spoiled by his grandmother.  As their relationship continues to spiral out of control, we find that the Bell family may have more secrets than a child delinquency issue.
In her first full length feature, director/screenwriter Tucia Lyman brings to life a common theme in many families:  communication issues that may go beyond personality disorders.  After an in-depth discussion, the director joins your co-hosts and answers further questions about the movie and its relevance today.
