  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 456 – The Deeper You Dig (2020)
With the ability to film movies on an iPhone, having drones replace crane shots, cheap software to edit, and using the internet to talk to music students for scores, do-it-yourself filmmaking is more possible now than anytime before.  An update New York family has done it all from A-to-Z making films.  Their latest, a horror movie, entitled THE DEEPER YOU DIG (2020), was released to fantastic reviews.
When Echo (Zelda Adams) decides to do a late night sledding ride, an accident occurs leading to her disappearance.  Her mother Ivy (Toby Poser) begins searching for her with flyers upon telephone polls to knocking on neighbors doors.  One such man, Kurt (John Adams), who is restoring a neighboring structure, tells both Ivy and the police he knows nothing about the girl.  However, his role in her disappearance may be more than he says.
THE DEEPER YOU DIG was co-written, co-directed, and co-starred in by husband-and-wife team John Adams and Toby Poser.  Their youngest daughter Zelda Adams also stars.  With a very small cast, their fantastic cinematography with night and winter filming, and strong acting, the movie has actually received a blu-ray release by boutique label, Arrow Video.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this little film and gives their thoughts.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 455 – The Honeymoon Phase (2020)
Shows and movies like WEST WORLD, RAISED BY WOLVES, EX MACHINA and ANNIHILATION have taken “identity” and turned the word’s meaning upside down.   Individuality becomes nothing more than a concept.  The new science fiction horror film THE HONEYMOON PHASE takes a look at the connotation of “self” yet in a “married” relationship.
Tom (Jim Schubin) and Eve (Chloe Carroll), a young yet unmarried couple, lie to be included in a science experiment between married couples.  They are to be placed in a secluded location for thirty days while being monitored daily on their activities and relationship.  As the first week passes, Eve begins to notice a change in Tom that begins to give her concern.  By week two, both their existences may be in jeopardy.
Directed as his feature length debut, Phillip Carroll also wrote the screenplay.  The movie definitely pays tribute to science fiction of yesteryear.  During the podcast, the two leads and the filmmaker join your co-hosts to answer further questions about the movie.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 454 – BODY CAM (2020)
The new film, BODY CAM (2020), was oddly released only weeks earlier than the unrest that has hit the United States.  The film functions as a commentary on illegal behavior by police officers after an arrest goes unfortunately wrong.  The movie follows the ghost story scenario that became somewhat standard with THE CHANGLING (1980).  The movie asks the basic question  “Is the ghost really malevolent or is it trying to tell those it haunts something?”
Renee (played by Mary J. Blige) is a police officer in a small city in Louisiana.  She recently is reinstated after having been suspended for breaking police procedure.  When a fellow officer is gruesomely murdered during what was a routine traffic stop, she begins to follow puzzle pieces that lead to the prior death of a young black youth.  Soon her discoveries may put her in danger from what may be a supernatural presence.
The movie is receiving mixed reviews though its Rottentomato score usually is solid for independent horror/thriller films.  Nicholas McCarthy, writer and director of such films as THE PACT (2012) and THE PRODIGY (2019), is the screenwriter for this film that is directed by newcomer Malik Vitthal.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this movie and gives their thoughts.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 453 – THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER (2018)
Christopher Ford’s rise to becoming a highly regarded Hollywood screenwriter is a story within itself.  Back in 2010, he was discovered by Eli Roth when Ford along with director Jon Watts (SPIDER-MAN:  HOMECOMING) did a short film as a yarn to get the attention of the famous director.  After deciding to produce a film based off the short, the movie CLOWN (2014) was made.  That movie jump started the careers of both Watts and Ford.  And by 2018, a hidden gem of a film (written by Ford) appeared called THE CLOVEHITCH KILLER.
Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is the perfect high school student.  He’s in the scouts, is an outstanding member of his church, and has a loving family.  One day when he discovers an S&M picture in the family truck, he begins to wonder if his dad is more than the great father that he had thought.  Working with his friend Kassi (Madisen Beaty) they begin to travel down a “rabbit hole” that may turn their life and their town upside down.
The movie, directed by Duncan Skiles, stars Dylan McDermott in the pivotal role of Tyler’s father.  With excellent acting, including Samantha Mathis as Tyler’s mother, the movie feeds doubts into the thoughts of a young man about his ideal life.  What follows is the slow fall of what otherwise was a perfect family.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this very interesting film and gives their thoughts.
