  • Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews – Volume 012 – VAMPIRES (2020)
Dark fantasy has arguably become the most popular subgenre of horror and fantasy these last few years.  Though not necessarily focusing on vampires, many do.  With the Anita Blake novels to the TRUE BLOOD TV series (and their novels they are based on), this genre has produced many vampire tales that have gained huge followings.  Netflix has recently released the 2020 new French six part series simply entitled VAMPIRES.
Young Parisian high schooler Doina Radescu lives with her family of vampires.  A hidden “disease” from centuries ago, they live as quietly as they can feeding on animal blood and blending in.  Unlike her mother Martha and older sibings, she and her teenage brother are told to use a pill that seems to eliminate blood thirst and sun death.  But the local vampire commune wants to keep every member of their community in check to the detriment to Martha.
The series has been ignored by many because the title, VAMPIRES, not only is meaningless, but it also gets lost in herd of hundreds of vampire films and shows on VOD.  Your co-hosts took a blind shot watching the series.  They discuss and critique the entire first season and talk about possibilities where the program will go if a season two is picked up.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast – Episode 452 – The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
Added in 1966 to American folklore was the Mothman, a creature or being that originally appeared in West Virginia.  When it appears, it usually does so as a harbinger of death or disaster.  Materializing as a humanoid being whose form looks similar to a man-sized moth, yet its manifestation is ominous. In 2002, the movie, THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, based off an experience by reporter John Keel arrived with great buzz.
Washington Post reporter John Klein and his wife get into a car accident after viewing new homes.  When she claims she saw the “mothman,” John begins to try to decipher this strange phenomenon.  After his wife passes away from cancer, he becomes filled with melancholy and removes himself from others.  Off on assignment, he can’t explain how he landed up six hours away from his original destination.  And soon he too may be in the grips of a supernatural being.
The film stars Richard Gere along with a great cast including Laura Linney, Will Patton, Alan Bates, and Debra Messing.  Though not the success Hollywood had hoped, the movie has gained a steady cult following and has for some arrived as a staple for Halloween.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this Patreon pick and gives their thoughts.

The Grays:  the number one movie monster that never gets its due.  Aliens with big eyes and gray skin and no hair.  They abduct folks, may do experiments on them; are they malevolent or peaceful?   Scary stuff to many.  And not surprisingly some people think they are real.  The new 2020 film, SKYMAN, is a faux documentary that brings it even more real.
Carl Merryweather (Michael Selle), for his fortieth birthday, wants to head out to the desert of California.  When he was a child, the location of note was where he claims he had met a being from another world.  He said he has received a message that they are returning.  A director wants to document his story so Carl agrees to be filmed on his latest adventure.   His sister, Gina (Nicolette Sweeney), and close friend, Marcus (Faleolo Alailima), come along as witnesses.
Daniel Myrick, writer and director of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, returns to found footage cinema for his latest production.  Starring unknowns, the film has received fairly good reviews and has been noticed by some high profile publications such as the New York Times and Hollywood Reporter.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this new science fiction move and gives their thoughts.
