DarkHorse Podcast

In this 211th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss Winter and seasonality, before a longer discussion of overfitting, shoe-horning, and straight-jacketing. How do models, collusion, and Occam’s Razor contribute to how we understand the world? Why are generalists better situated to interpret complexity than are specialists? Then: how good is the science behind the major paper out of The Lancet that assures us that we should not be eating red meat? Answer: not very. Finally, we discuss the orcas who were trapped in sea ice off of Japan, and what it means to be an orca (including mention of the grandmother hypothesis).

In this 210th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss hypotheses about the border situation. Having just returned from Panama, Bret hypothesizes that there are two immigrations happening: the migration driven by the pursuit of greater economic opportunities in the United States, which includes people from all over the world, and a lot of families; and a second, cryptic migration which includes mostly people from China, of military age, heavily skewed towards men. He also reviews a hypothesis from some years back, about the effect of the one-child policy in China, taken in concert with the tendency to prefer boys. We then discuss neurogenesis in pregnant mice; and also the “diaper spa” being opened in New Hampshire, which is only possible because we have stopped allowing ourselves to critique anti-social and anti-societal tendencies.

In this 209th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss misinformation and how dangerous it is, especially to mainstream researchers and media. We dissect research that claims to find evidence that “doing your own research” actually cements false views, and find that the research itself is so methodologically flawed as to be incapable of delivering accurate results. We celebrate the finding of Canada’s Federal Court that the invoking of the Emergencies Act during the Trucker’s Convoy was unconstitutional; and we discuss the WHO’s faltering pandemic preparedness plan. And we briefly discussed Panama: what is happening in the Darien, in the Panama Canal, and why a monkey crossed the Canal. Head over to our Locals for more content from Bret & Zack’s recent trip to Panama.

In this 208th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we discuss how not to hand Goliath a win. Letting Goliath in on the social landscape of the dissidents, on the petty feuds and disagreements, is giving it power that it should not have. And we discuss Boeing’s 737-9 Max airplanes: the one that blew out a door plug above Oregon; the FAA’s response to that “in-flight departure”; and recent changes at Boeing, which include increasing the focus on product and employee safety and product quality, to now also focus on climate, and on Diversity Equity and Inclusion). As we predicted before: move away from prioritizing merit in favor of immutable characteristics, and disaster will follow.

In this 207th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode, we sort out the strange reaction to Bret’s recent appearance on Tucker Carlson. What do all mobs have in common? What are the differences between critique and competition? We also talk about fat: from butter to olive oil to canola oil, what should you fry in? Are saturated fats bad for you? What are the differences between mono- and poly- unsaturated fats? Does the food industry have it right about anything? Should we fight for the right to yellow margarine?

Then: a short reading from Natural Selections. And: What happened to Claudine Gay, the now-resigned president of Harvard, and why is anyone surprised? In light of the largest solar flare since 2017, which, had it been angled differently, could have wreaked havoc on Earth, why don’t we have systems in place to prevent such havoc? Are any of our institutions or systems functional? What is driving the lack of functionality?

In this episode, we briefly discuss solar storms, Carrington events, and the possible failure of the electrical grid. Then: what does the absence of organisms where they once were mean? In the Exumas, Bahamas, this month, there were no laughing gulls. Eight months ago they were abundant in the same place. Could they be migrating? Might it be a pathogen? Local patchiness? Major decline for other reasons, like competition, or toxicity from plastics or pesticides? We discuss conservation success stories, like sea otters and bald eagles and California condors; and failures, like sea stars on the West coast of North America; and show some videos from the Bahamas. We object to the conflation of “environmental decline” with “climate change.” And we discuss curly haired “woolly dogs” of the Pacific Northwest, who were bred and cared for by the Coast Salish people, but are now extinct.

In this episode, we discuss science and faith, in the context of the recent court ruling that will keep Trump off the ballot in Colorado. We discuss failure modes, which include, yes, faith, and science, and falsificationism, and rationality, and more. All of these are useful in some contexts, some much more than others, but none are sufficient. What, in the end, are scientists doing, and what are people doing in the name of science? Also: the solstice, and a reading from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

In this 203rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

In this episode we once again discuss college presidents, in light of what is happening at Harvard and other elite schools. We talk about historical and bureaucratic constraint, Evergreen, consulting firms, and plagiarism, and, in a related story, how someone acting on behalf of the Mayor of Boston mistakenly invited all 13 city councilors to a holiday party, when she meant to invite only the 6 who are “electeds of color.” Then: what do morbid curiosity and predator inspection have in common? People seem to be dying at high rates, and in new contexts, but is this actually the case? How would we know? What do the global excess mortality data suggest? Then: rules to live by, as acknowledged by us at Hanukkah.
