DarkHorse Podcast

In this 110th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

This week, we talk about Covid from different rooms, because one of us has Omicron. It’s fine, very minor really. And having had it will provide lasting immunity to the virus! We discuss vaccine mandates, this variant compared to the last, and how some people have viewed the mRNA vaccines as a raft in a shipwreck, while others of us have not. We read a tiny bit from Kary Mullis, discuss brisket and the power of onions, and honor David Bowie on his birthday.

In this 109th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.

This week, we talk about many things Covid. Obesity is a well-established comorbidity for Covid, but the mainstream media often insists that stigma, rather than actual physiological reality, is what puts fat people at risk. Why do public health injunctions so rarely offer anything that individuals can actually do for themselves? Children are at very low risk from bad outcomes from Covid. What are we stealing from them that we have no right to steal—with masks, physical distancing, and other interventions? How can we go on an “ethical offense” against mandates and other top-down measures? And finally: observations from the ground in Australia. Also: research-based consumer reviews, and the many languages into which our book is being translated!

We discuss dissent, and argue that it is more common than people tend to think. What is up with the omicron variant? We remind people that there are ways to deal with Covid other than vaccines. Meanwhile, the AMA is apparently too busy declaring “morbidly obese” a mean term to actually care about people’s health. Florida is getting something right; the newly made-up PPSD (Post Pandemic Stress Disorder) will most definitely be responsible for all the heart problems that are about to occur; and the NYT aims directly at children. We discuss our Chanukah traditions. And there are many human universals, including: we have music, and we dance.

We discuss compliance, and that non-compliance is not inherently a bleak, dark, dreary place; it can be joyous. We read an excerpt from Catch-22. The Multnomah County Sheriff’s office is—in contrast—a bleak and dreary place these days. Then we investigate how “crossed state lines” is like “horse dewormer”? The Atlantic goes full gossip girl on vaccines. And we discuss the virtues of being in one place, really being there, and getting to know it over time.

How can higher education be saved? The University of Austin launched this week, to much enthusiasm, some ridicule, and cautious optimism. We discuss what higher ed in general, and UATX in particular, needs to consider, including that faculty need to know something real, be able to communicate it, and have a fundamental belief in the humanity of their students. We discuss religion in the context of Chesterton’s fence, and apologies. What is an apology, why are apologies not just valuable but necessary, and how is modernity rendering them less useful? Finally: an update on the zoo giraffes who died, which we discussed last week: they had not been vaccinated, according to a Newsweek fact check. And a short discussion of quail.
