Welcome to the Daughter of Godcast, episode 049, Lawns. The final installment of my conversation with Executive Director of the Watershed Center, Christine Crissman. We talk about my least favorite invasive species, the bane of watersheds everywhere, lawns. That’s right, that lush expanse of green you’re supposed to water, fertilize, mow, water, fertilize mow, water, fertilize, mow. I used to have a lawn, and now I have… this! And this!

I lost my lawn mostly because I was forced to mow huge yards in my teen years when I lived in Pound Ridge, New York and then New Canaan, CT, and oh, how I loathed that chore.

Turns out lawns are not only boring but problematic for our wild waters. Only a little fertilizer gets taken up by grass, the rest is carried by ground water (or worse, as run off) into streams and lakes. And then wild waters are in trouble. We’re not even talking about weed killing glycophosphate formulations like Monsanto’s Round Up, which likely causes cancer and autism.

Moving right along. We’re back with the Daughter of Godcast, episode 046, swim. These skinny episodes seem to be popular. I am also slightly skinnier, having just finished 10 days of the master cleanse or lemonade fast and about to enter 3-5 days of fresh juicing. I’m in training, resetting my metabolism in preparation for a open water swim race this August. Because Daughter of God is raising funds to protect and steward wild waters.

Here in Northern Michigan, there’s lots of wild water. We’ve got Lake Michigan to the west and Lake Superior north of the Upper Peninsula, and if you’ve never been here the beaches are amazing. You might as well be standing next to an ocean, these lakes are really fresh water inland seas. Also we’ve got gorgeous rivers and creeks, and lots of smaller lakes, like Crystal Lake, where the Artist house is fortunate enough to have our primary studio.

The Watershed Center, Grand Traverse Bay is a non-profit doing all sorts of stewardship in the region. I’ve got some healthy skepticism about non-profits, some of them are running a suicidal agenda and others seem to exist just to provide a living wage for their staff. 2015 started so funky. Winning my trademark challenge, getting my favorite motorcycle, loosing my lover… almost ready to realize that the transformation of intensity into clarity can be a very organic and easy process, as long we don’t muddy the water with blame or insecurity.

At the start of 2015, my water was quite murky.

Rather than dwelling on what isn’t ideal for us, we can turn our attention towards what we might enjoy while fostering a sense of excited anticipation. Like throwing sun bricks into the sky and building a levitating citadel. Cultivating a lush cloud garden. Entertaining dreams and desires. Climbing the rainbow.

In spring of 2015, I noticed the rainbow was a ladder.

The 44th episode. That’s a nice symmetrical number, a square four sides each 11 units long. As I’ve logged years, I’ve become more open to the pleasure of numbers. Twas not alway so, as a lad numbers chafed. Strangely though, I recall happily my memorization of the multiplication tables in Catholic school. I think the memorization, not the numbers was what appealed. That was my actor aspect waiting in the wings, the me that would enjoy rapid assimilation of dialogue and then forget the entire script a few days after the final performance.  Still remember my Catholic school multiplication tables tho.

1×1 = 1, 1×2 = 2…

All the interesting things humans come up with, like counting, numbers and mathematics. My stint as a coder made me way more numeric. If I had realized numbers could make pictures back in high school, I would have paid more attention in math class.

Just a few moments ago, I lay in the between domains of nap taking and waking, editing this podcast in a half dream, crafting the perfect sentences… for ending love. To tell the stories of Daughter of God, I look back through thousands of emails, journal entries, video attachments… and she is everywhere, mostly inferred, at the edges of conversations I had with others. For we were each other’s day to day, rarely emailing or texting each other, together with touch, smiles and talking, mostly undocumented. Though years have passed, and I know my happiness is liberated from the actions or presence of any specific person, I am reminded of her. In this retelling, I by necessity must relive loss. To remember the making, I must also remember the endings. I remind myself I just have to get past my birthday of 2015 and her echoes will end. Less than a year to go, friends. Almost there.
