Dave 'Softy' Mahler and Dick Fain episodes

  • Softy and Dick H3 - Art Briles coaching high school / Fun with Audio: Fiery under the covers / Pre-Game Show / Tuesdays with Tod
Art Briles is back in the news, coaching high school football in Texas. Though he deserves some of the criticism for what happened at Baylor for sure, he wasn't the person closest to the players in most cases, and he certainly wasn't the one committing any of the acts in question. There needs to be some perspective on who is to blame, and how much blame they received for the things that happened. On Fun with Audio, Mallex Smith steals for the cycle (that's a thing?), plus a Jamaican Raptors fan, Steve Kerr makes dad jokes, and more. We briefly discuss R. J. Hampton's decision to play overseas, and The Boz representing the Seahawks on an NFL 100 day countdown picture. The M's are at home against the Rangers tonight. We set the lineups and here from the coach on Baseball's Best Pre-Game Show. Dave Tippett is officially heading to Edmonton to take the Oilers coaching job, so Tod Leiweke returns to the show for Tuesdays with ....Tod. He talks about what Tip has done for the team thus far, plus discussion on AHL team location, and when we might finally get a name and logo.

  • Softy and Dick H1 - Softy out, Terry Blount in / Worst M's team ever? / Hawks building to win / The Dawgs and one-and-dones
Softy has the day off, so Terry Blount is stepping in for the first hour of the show today. It'll be the last time we hear from Terry for awhile as he's about to move to San Diego. The Mariners have been bad the last few weeks. In fact, that's an understatement. They're on pace to have the most errors in team history, and the most errrs in the MLB in 30 years. Are they the worst team in franchise history? With this franchise, that's saying something. The Seahawks grabbed a lot of players in the draft that look pretty solid thus far. Schneider and Carroll have proven year after year that they can draft and develop players at an elite level. Will they continue to have the success they've had in the past? The Huskies are poised to have a huge year with players like McDaniels and Stewart, but with so many young guys, can they go deep in the tournament?

  • Softy and Dick H2 - Josh Kerns of Golf Talk Seattle / Bill Krueger on the Mariners: Pitching over launch angles / Textimonials
Dick is joined by Josh Kerns of Golf Talk Seattle, which airs every Saturday morning on KJR. After Brooks Koepka's win last weekend, can we expect more of that from him, or will he fizzle out? The Mariners are struggling, but are they the worst team in franchise history. We discuss with ROOT Sports' Bill Krueger. Textimonials react to the first two hours of the show.

  • Softy and Dick H3 - Donald Watts covers all things basketball: NBA, and the Dawgs / Fun with Audio: Weatherman conspiracy
In the third hour of the show, Dick is joined by Donald Watts to talk all things basketball, from the Eastern Conference Finals, to Golden State, supermax contracts and more, plus thoughts on Jaylen Nowell, and the potential one-and-dones joining the Husky basketball program. On Fun with Audio, Mike Francesa is convinced that weathermen trick unsuspecting viewers into believing the sun will shine on Memorial Day Weekend for some reason.

  • Softy and Dick H1 - Freezin' for a Reason / Jamal Crawford on the Dawgs & the NBA / Yogi Roth on Pac-12 football / Bonta Hill talks Warriors
Softy and Dick are at Jackson's in Issaquah, sitting in a cooler, freezin' for a reason in support of the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. Jamal Crawford, hometown legend, calls us up as we get underway to talk about the NBA Playoffs, the All-NBA teams, and Jaden McDaniels committing to Washington. Football season is getting closer. Yogi Roth from the Pac-12 Network looks at the Dawgs' upcoming season. He was confident the last time we talked to him. How confident is he that the Warriors can win even if Durant doesn't come back? We chat with Bonta Hill to find out how he feels about the Warriors right now.

  • Softy and Dick H2 - Freezin' for a Reason / Shiver for a segment / Cano criticized for not hustling, hustles, gets hurt
We are Freezin' for a Reason in a cooler at Jackson's in Issaquah in support of the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. Come down and shiver for a segment. Robinson Cano was getting criticized for his lack of hustle, just as he was criticized here, so he hustles to first base and gets hurt. Contracts like Cano's just don't work. One of the best things the Mariners could have done was get rid of that huge paycheck. The Warriors don't really need Kevin Durant, but they should re-sign him just so they don't have to play him.

  • Softy and Dick H3 - Freezin' for a Reason / Jamal Crawford / Seth Everett talks baseball, and Avengers / One little mistake can cost you
It's our final hour of Freezin' for a Reason at Jackson's in Issaquah supporting the Wildland Firefighter Foundation in partnership with Coors Light. In case you missed it, we spoke with Jamal Crawford earlier, so we roll that back. Seth Everett talks about Cano's contract, the Mets' problems, and the inevitable changes that he says will have to come to baseball. The Stanley Cup Final begins next week, and with a hockey team coming to this city it's a good chance to familiarize ourselves with the sport more. One thing that makes hockey fun to watch is that one little mistake can cost you the game, which isn't quite as true in most other sports.

  • Softy and Dick H1 - Jaden McDaniels commits to UW / Seattle deserves the NFL Draft / UW basketball coach Mike Hopkins
Coach Hopkins and the Washington basketball team lands another huge recruit as Jaden McDaniels decides to stay close to home, and commits to UW. Obviously, this is huge for the school, and proves that Washington is developing into a high-level basketball team that can snag elite recruits. McDaniels, like Isaiah Stewart, is likely to be a one-and-done, and the fact is that players that play for only a year often don't bring their schools a championship. Of course Hop isn't going to turn these guys down, but it'l be interesting to see how the program develops around these types of players. The NFL has announced the locations of the next few drafts, but left a gaping hole in 2022. Could they be waiting to see how the Seattle arena turns out? Maybe, maybe not, but it would be very cool to get a big event like the draft back in this town. We haven't seen anything like it here in over a decade. Husky basketball coach Mike Hopkins joins us late in the hour to discuss the recruiting class, and what next year's basketball team will look like.

  • Softy and Dick H2 - Which Husky team is better? / Petros Papadakis: Al Cowlings Residence Hall / Textimonials
With the news that Jaden McDaniels is coming to Montlake, the Husky basketball team just keeps looking better and better. Dick asks which Husky team, football or basketball, is better going into the next season? Petros Papadakis reacts to everything happening in Southern California sports. Al Cowlings has a residence hall named after him? / Textimonials react to the first two hours of the show.
    35 min
  • Softy and Dick H3 - Mike DeCourcy on the UW basketball recruiting class / Joel Corry on Bobby Wagner's contract / Isaiah Stanback
The big news today of course is that Jaden McDaniels is staying put here in Washington, deciding to play for Mike Hopkins. The Sporting News' Mike DeCourcy talks about the recruiting class the Dawgs have put together. Bobby Wagner has made it pretty clear what he wants from the Seahawks contract-wise, but will he get it? We talk about it with former agent Joel Corry. Former Garfield football player, former Dawg, and former NFL player Isaiah Stanback is in town. He stops by the studio for a few segments to cover everything from his efforts to encourage athletes to use their voice for change, to his thoughts on the Dawgs, his kids playing football, and a whole lot more.
