Washington Tight End Jack Westover, Left Tackle Troy Fautanu, Right Tackle Roger Rosengarten, Right Guard Julius Buelow, EDGE Bralen Trice, and EDGE Zion Tupuola-Fetui all talk about the importance of finishing the job of going unbeaten in Pac-12 play with a win over Washington State in the 115th Boeing Apple Cup this weekend at Husky Stadium.
Ryan Grubb and Chuck Morrell talk about Washington's win over Oregon State and their upcoming game against Washington State in the Apple Cup.
Grubb addresses the Huskies' lack of success in running the ball and the offense's struggles to remain consistent while Morrell discusses facing a tough, downhill runner like Damien Martinez from Oregon State and how special Washington State QB Cameron Ward is and what Washington has to do to keep him from beating them.
Washington Head Coach Kalen DeBoer, UW Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb, and Co-Defensive Coordinator Chuck Morrell spoke with the media Monday about UW's 22-20 win at Oregon State, the 115th Apple Cup, national disrespect when it comes to the College Football Playoff, and more.
Washington Head Coach Kalen DeBoer, QB Michael Penix, WR Rome Odunze, DB Jabbar Muhammad, and LB Carson Bruener talk to the media Saturday night after the Huskies' 22-20 win in Corvallis over Oregon State gets them to 11-0 on the season.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - gave their initial thoughts post-game after the No. 5 Washington Huskies traveled to Corvallis, Ore. and defeated the No. 11 Oregon State Beavers 22-20 in a manner few would have expected.
To start the podcast, Kim sets the scene as it was a deluge at Reser Stadium, and the rain never really stopped until near the end of the game. And even then it never fully went away. But what about the noise and the new stadium configuration? Did the overflow crowd offer the kind of hostile atmosphere befitting a game of this stature?
But to talk about how this game was pulled out by the Huskies after not scoring a point in the second half, the conversation immediately turned to the defense. Dealing with a rash of injuries - especially in the secondary - Washington bowed up when they needed to and also came away with three essential takeaways.
With Tuli Letuligasenoa and Bralen Trice up front, Carson Bruener in the middle for an injured Alphonzo Tuputala, and Jabbar Muhammad essentially taking away half the field in the secondary, it was those key players that led the effort that eventually pushed the Huskies over the line when their offense wasn't able to sustain drives and did unsuccessfully chase points at the end of the second quarter when they did score.
After a quick break the talk turned to the second half and the missed opportunity right off the bat after Muhammad came up with his second interception of the day. A missed field goal was as close as the Huskies would get to scoring in the final 30 minutes, so it was up to the defense to rise up and have the offense's back.
But when they needed to make a play after the defense stopped OSU on fourth down late in the fourth quarter and all Washington needed was a first down to salt the game away, they stuck to who they've been all year, an aggressive team who will find their top playmakers in one-on-one situations. With Michael Penix Jr. doing some damage with his legs for key first downs and then finding Rome Odunze on third down to win UW the game, it wasn't the way Ryan Grubb would have drawn it up but it was good enough to get to 11-0.
The guys talk about the aftermath of the game, including the fact that the Huskies achieved their first objective; punching their ticket to the Pac-12 Championship game. Kim also provides the relevant team and individual statistics on the night. They also talk about the legacy Kalen DeBoer continues to build as he's the only D1 coach besides Georgia's Kirby Smart to beat every ranked opponent they've played the past two seasons.
To wrap up the podcast, the guys give their final thoughts on the game, what it all means in the larger scheme, and looking ahead to a most eventful Apple Cup next weekend.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got up bright and early this morning to offer their thoughts on the highly-anticipated matchup today between No. 5 Washington and No. 11 Oregon State. And we couldn't start a show featuring the Beavers without a chainsaw, just to give UW fans a taste of what they're going to be hearing all game long.
There's a lot of history in play today. It's not just the first time the two teams have played each other ranked in the AP top-10, but it's also the last Pac-12 home game for OSU and probably the last game played between the Huskies and Beavers for some time because of Washington's move to the Big Ten starting next season.
Will Oregon and Oregon State keep playing, or will their rivalry go by the wayside in the same way it's looking like the Apple Cup will? Or will there be a way to keep both rivalries going?
The talk then turns to the College Football Playoff, the perceived snub of Washington not being in the top-4 as Florida State is preferred for the final playoff spot as things stand today. There is still a lot of games to be played and Washington still holds their destiny in their hands. But could a scenario exists where a 1-loss Pac-12 team doesn't make the playoff?
And based on what the 12-game playoff format looks like starting next season, could it entice a coach like UW OC Ryan Grubb to look at maybe jumping to a head coaching opportunity at a place like Boise State or San Diego State? And could those schools pay what a coach like Grubb would require, considering he's making more as a coordinator now at UW than he would as a head coach at those schools? And are there other Washington assistant coaches that could get caught up in the coaching carousel?
Kim, Chris, and Scott also got a chance to talk to a number of Washington coaches and players this week. And it's become a bit of news when Michael Penix Jr. admitted to ESPN's Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit that the players have been paying attention to the fact that Oregon State is favored to win the game. Receivers Coach JaMarcus Shephard echoed the sentiment, saying he hopes everyone continues to discredit the Huskies. Apparently the same thing happened leading up to the game at Michigan State, and we all saw what happened then. Will all that really create a chip on the shoulder that actually makes a difference in today's game?
After a quick break to pay some bills, the guys return to discuss the game matchup, starting with Oregon State's offense versus Washington's defense. Do the Huskies have what it takes to slow down a potent Beavers run game? How much will the inclusion of Tuli Letuligasenoa matter when it comes to winning the battle at the line of scrimmage?
And then looking at the other matchup - Washington's offense versus Oregon State's defense - can Washington dictate terms with Penix running the show? How much will the atmosphere and electricity favoring the home team impact the ability of the Huskies to communicate and move the ball? And can Dillon Johnson continue to provide enough run game to keep the Oregon State defense honest?
To finish up the show, the guys all give their final thoughts, as both Kim and Scott have predicted a Washington win, while Chris believes the home team will have enough to pull off a huge win to keep their Pac-12 Championship Game hopes alive.
Luke Mounger and Jack McCauley offer their insight into what they see happening Saturday afternoon at Reser Stadium as Washington looks to go 11-0 on the season as Road Dawgs. Also included is Pick the Pac, Bets to Bark, and finally their confidence intervals for the UW-Oregon State game.
Learning more about Washington's weekend opponent from Beaver Blitz's Angie Machado, the publisher of Oregon State's site on the 247Sports Network.
Husky coaches Scott Huff, Julius Brown, JaMarcus Shephard and Eric Schmidt discuss Washington's game vs. Utah last week and look forward to their game against Oregon State on Saturday
Washington WR Rome Odunze, TE Devin Culp, OL Roger Rosengarten, and LB Alphonzo Tuputala talked to the media this week ahead of UW's trip to Corvallis to take on top-10 Oregon State.
